In this game I am playing all AI's seem to be bugged. It moves its fleet into enemy system, captures the space station and then proceeds to bomb the planet endlessly. Even after all of the armies there are dead. AI even has army transports at its disposal just sitting there attached to another fleet in another system. It is pretty game breaking, because it just makes the AI noncompetitive and nonthreatening (unless you have just 1 planet).

Is this a 2.2 specific bug or am I missing something?

The AI has always been bad at invading planets. It used the be a bit less bad with warp and pre-2.0 hyperlanes because troop transports moved quicker and did not engage stations or random ships that often.

In my current game which goes rather slowly as I'm just experimenting I had to use my own troop transports to help a machine ally take the worlds of a DE. The AI empire took control of systems without too many problems(although target selection and pathfindng was horrible) but the troop transports got lost after the 1st world. RP wise it was fun though with my slave armies being used as expedable ground forces in a war which was only fought because I wanted my AI ally to have all those machine pops because purging them seemed like a waste...

In my opinion they should just remove the troop transport mechanics. Just give ships the ability to drop armies. You could still make special invasion fleets by making special troop types ship modules.

[...].

But that is just HORRIBLE. What is the point of adding all these features with new p2p DLC's if the AI cant perform the basics functions in the game?

I have seen the AI invading systems. It is pretty common in fact. I'd even say it is more likely to invade too soon and lose its armies.

True, I have seen it too. I think that is what causes it. Whenever AI fails to invade or does not have a transport squad attached to a fleet it just doesn't make any new transports and continues to bomb.

To keep you busy while building your forces up for the crisis. That is more or less min/max SP play since 2.0 at least for me.

I suspect most people never notice the AIs incompetence in that regard because they quit a game once they start losing stuff to the AI.
I only play max. difficulty with max. number of advanced AIs and I was used to that at least before 2.0. Unless the AI had only one or two planets to take it bugged out most of the time. I was always able to recover even if I lost two or three planets at first.

Edit: I like watching the AI fights its wars and quite often an AI empire will take a lot of systems from another AI but most planets in those systems will stay unconquered until the forced peace kicks in.

Ya it's dumb. This has been a problem for a long time too. They should have axed armies this expansion and just used bombardment as a invasion factor. Too many people would cry about it though so we are stuck with a long running broken mechanic.

So, I paid about 80$ for a broken game.. Great! :D For me it is all about role playing where the AI is important (unless you RP the idea where all aliens are idiots). Not really interested in MP.

Mechanics are only axed if the AI worked okish with it. If a mechanic hurts the AI they will expand it(see hyperlane only).

It does invade planets (at least, with Glavius’ AI mod, but he didn’t change anything about invasions yet). It’s just that it’s really incompetent at it. But I’ve seen planets occasionally being conquered in my playthough.

If you do a federation vs. federation war, the easiest way to win at least used to be building armies and sending them to follow AI fleets.

They would often screw up and let 2 corvettes or something attack your transport fleet because it wouldn't wait for an invasion to finish, but when your federation takes planets and theirs doesn't, you tend to win.
