AI declares war without having free diplomat. WAD?
IIRC the AI gets an additional Diplomat which it only uses for DoW, Alliance offers, etc....

Edit: Because Devs can't be bothered with programming AI smart enough to recall the dipolomat if it needs them. Law of diminishing returns and all that; personally have no problem with it.

I could be wrong on all of this ofc

AI declares war without having free diplomat. WAD?

Devs have said in the past that the AI gets an extra diplomat for certain vital actions. This was done because the AI cannot plan when to recall diplomats like the player can.

I think they did try to get the AI to work their diplomats properly like that but it kept going buggy so they changed it because it was just easier. to be fair it doesnt really make any problems, the AI needs all the help it can get sometimes.

It would be difficult because it requires planning, which AIs are not good at. Even Declaring War in EUIV is pretty spontaneous for the AI, and can be a result of rapidly changing situations.

In all honesty there's very little balance difference between the AI being able to recall a diplomat, send it to declare war, then re-send it to keep improving relations, and just giving them a free diplomat. It might get them an extra, what, +5 Opinion?

I imagine that without it, the AI would be fairly lonely with no friends and a huge amount of friendliness from each other.

why does it even matter

like I'm legitimately confused, is there some strategy that you are using that involves diplomat locking the enemy? There are AI hax that affect gameplay far more than this one - this is what, 1-2 monthly relation ticks most of the time?

They get a free diplomatic relation too, so taht the player isn't denied said relations.

In all but the most extreme circumstances there's limited overall advantage. Rather than having the AI cycle between recalling a diplomat, declaring war, then returning the diplomat they get a free one that can declare war. As the player I can do gamey things this way too. Given that I receive exactly zero penalty (aside from micromanagement) in 99% of my recalls compared to the AI, it's a big "meh" to me.

I'd actually be okay with DOW not requiring a diplomat and only sustained stuff, but it is what it is and works well enough IMO.

I always thought the additional diplomat was less about the AI unable to recall diplomats improving relations, but more about other long-term diplomatic actions that penalise you for recalling (fabricating claims, integrating vassals). It seems very complicated to design a system that makes good decisions. Generally you don't want to abort these actions, but sometimes you might have to (getting a crucial military access or alliance, joining a coalition, making someone a diplo vassal or sneaking in the perfect declaration of war). HRE nations can grow quite large and still be duchies with two diplomats. A large (non-emperor or pre-reform) Austria that is integrating someone and fabricating a claim being dead in the water on all diplo actions seems just as broken as an AI aborting an integration at 40% or a fabrication at 90%.

And let's not forget that we all benefit from the additional AI diplomat. That's how we get those instant royal marriage offers so we don't have to use our own diplomats...

How hard can it be to program the AI to recall its diplomat from improving relations?

It might not be that hard, but it won't change almost anything and won't be noticed by player unless he specifically looks for it. It's not like it's a significant buff for AI, it's making some game mechanics simplified for him. They've instead spent time working on more visible AI algorithms.

I would also lean towards believing that it would be much harder to program the AI to plan ahead of time, than laymen would believe.

Has nothing to do with how hard it is. It's a simple and practical "hack" to gain more performance. Alternatively the AI would have to constantly check it's diplomatic ties every day instead of just once a month.
