I have the Ottomans down to one province, but couldn't wipe them in the last war. In a last ditch effort to stay alive they allied with...*drum roll*...Ulm!

In this case I have killed their armies, neither of them has any troops, Sinop is sieged down and my fleet is resupplying in the enemy capital, but the Ottomans won't quit because Ulm. Ulm...won't...quit. What do they think will change? "No! I won't exit the war, I demand you loot my capital first!" Seriously, could the AI be just a tinsy bit better at reading the writing on the wall?

I guess in a similar situation to that, the AI could think "hmm maybe my ally will distract the enemy before he sieges me, so i can still come back from this"
which is why they won't surrender right away

but they should add an extra check, if there is no hope for comeback, just add like +100 to reasons to surrender..

I think in situation on screenshot Ulm should agree on nothing more than white peace (provided they have level 6 fort). However, refusing white peace offer makes no sense in this situation.

Follow up, eventually the siege finished, the Papal State got some loot, I then demanded conversion and a bunch more loot. Theeeeen no more Ottomans. Still, Ulm should have been the one offering white peace at first, then if I refused trying to offer to pay me to not loot their city. Even if the ruler were a [expletive] there would be pressure from the city itself to pay for peace to avoid being looted.

I think this is one of those where making the game behave in the most straightforwardly logical way is not necessarily good. Obviously it makes no sense for Ulm to be in that war. But I pretty strongly doubt that having the AI quickly cave in any war it can’t win would make the game better.

edit: that said, it’s still a good comment. for EU5 the devs should keep this problem in mind as they design gameplay.

I mean, they're allied to the MIGHTY ULM.

Their confidence seems justified to me.

Joking aside, the AI definitely needs a malus to apply when it looks at the manpower available to both sides and sees that that their opponent has a 20 to 1 advantage and a war enthusiasm at 100%. There's no coming back from that.

Yes, if there is no army on one side and almost 100% occupation of that side, that should be enough for a total surrender. All the rest is just waste of time.
