This may be more during the Religious league war, but i've noticed Austria running a ridiculous amount of alliances occasionally. Like in my current Theodoro game it has 14 countries it is allied with. In a previous game i've seen it allied with 11. Does the AI get a pass on diplo slots during the League war or something? I can't see how it can justify tanking it's diplomacy to run this many alliances. One good outcome from this at least is that if France gets uppity during these times, Austria can summon a nigh unstoppable horde to actually defeat them and defend the empire. This makes me think of a new mechanic that should maybe be created for the HRE. If the HRE comes under attack from outside, the Emperor can CTA any nation within the HRE to help in it's defense regardless of whether it is allied or not. The chance of the CTA being accepted could use the same opinion modifiers for whether the Prince would support the next reform, and then further modify it by rivalries, enemies etc and then the usual modifers for accepting a CTA like WE, Loans and manpower.

I remember reading that the AI is not penalized by over the limit diplomatic relationships. I might be mistaken so don't quote me on it.

I remember a few patches ago I saw them allied to all of the HRE that didn't rival it... also fun: Watch Castille come crush your little muscovy because it can somehow get access trough ALL of Europe

That is what austria does... that's their weapon.

Last austrian game I played I had 13 dip slots... so you should be happy the AI doesnt min/max like a good player. So even after the nerf 11 should still be doable.

Also, the ai gets one extra dip slot on top of their ideas to be reserved/used on you.

Yes, but did you have 13 diplo slots in 1550? I know Austria can gain a lot of slots picking the right ideas and policies, but 14 (or 13 minus myself) is still quite a few for that early in the game. I've got no problem with the AI getting unlimited slots for military access for free, but getting free alliances and being able to keep up to date with Diplo tech is kind of pushing it. Not that Austria creates scary naval fleets to take advantage of that diplo tech, but it's the principle of the thing. Keep in mind, i'm asking if this is a religious league thing, because in my previous games where they've put together those enormous alliances, later on in the game they pare back down to a normal 5 or so depending on the nation structure in their area.

If they got their ideas filled up fast (usually do as a lucky nation) then 1550 is easily doable to complete 3 idea sets...

Why not look at thier ideas yourself. It's possible they went over limit (even on accident) from PUs. One of my recent games I dismantled the empire after austria Revoked the privilage. That left them with about 30 diplo relations and no way to get out of that whole for the rest of the game... cant annex out of it without dippoints.

Yah I had looked, they've got 4 extra slots (NI, Diplo, Influence, Archduchy), so that would give them like 8 or 9, so they are still at least 5 over.

In my last Pommerania game Austria was allied to France, Russia, Sweden, Castille, Lithuania all the HRE electors and one or two other OPMs.... Really, Austria is just ridiculous when it comes to alliances. even if I managed to annul those alliances by a peace deal, they were reformed when the penalty had run out.
