Let me begin to say, that at least in this patch the AI is more proactive than in 1.0 so it is not entirely bad.

That said, I think there is a huge difference between smart proactive and taking on Rome when you only have one province and your entire income depends on trade with them. (pic for reference, hard difficulty)

Egypt? Carthage? Phrygia? Heck, any major power? NO, they don't have the balls. But this one isolated OPM has.

Yeah it's been reported and acknowledged that city states some times start very silly wars on the bug forums. I also witnessed a city state declare war against Macedon, Egypt, Sparta, and Phrygia in one war. It was pretty nuts. Is it a behavior specific to city states though?

Edit: I think the AI was always aggressive whenever you had low manpower/cash and/or were busy with many other wars (also pre Pompey patch), or if they simply had many more cohorts than you.

Well, there were 2 other occasions where my vassal got DOW by some tribes in the Danube, so I think they might not count the strength of the overlord.

And I would think this was a smart choice if only I didn't have close to 200k manpower and almost 3k gold. The war was just a joke, they occupied 1 province before I hired a mercenary stack.

Other than OPMs or DOWs on my subjects I have yet to see any sizeable country even try to attack me, heck, Phrygia and Carthage just gave up and offered alliances? out of all things.

It is a bit disappointing as the AI just sits there waiting to be annexed.

Regarding OP, that looks plain bugged. These issues are a bit problematic debugging as usually the save game is after the fact, but upload save in bug forum nonetheless. There are a lot of potential causes.

Given that alliances were nerfed to ground before release by being replaced by rank dependent system and there are no ways for AIs to cooperate, this is what you get. Yeah, we should address this.

This is quite a big problem in my opinion: not only the rank system for alliances is arbitrary an not very realistic, but also I think the biggest problem with the game is that once you are a certain size (for example once you have conquered Italy as Rome) you don’t have any challenges by other powers. Are you doing something with the next patch to address this or we are going to wait longer to see the mid to late game become more challenging?
Anyway keep up with the good work, the game is already much better in 1.1 than it was before, so I’m confident that you guys will deal with this and other problems adequately!

Actually, size can be not a two-position trigger but a negative modifier, which gives some flexibility to the alliances and stuff simply by improving relations.

I agree. It's a cool mechanism to have diplomacy options added everytime you increase rank, but having other diplomacy options removed as well reduces the importance of diplomacy in the mid-game. It's what has led
many to complain that the diplomacy system is worse than in EU4.
