As we have seen with games on WWW even in historical mode sometimes Amelia Earhart completes her flight around the world, thus splitting the timeline and thus we have steam powered dirigibles dropping incendiary bombs on Madrid in 1944. But can there be similar events related to the key personnel in the Manhattan project as well that will effect the development of the atomic bomb?
For example Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist credited as the father of the atomic bomb, was instrumental in the US's Manhattan project. But for example in an ahistorical game, if Italy restrained its most fascist impulses and did not scare Fermi out of the country in 1938 for fear for his wife's liberty and life, could this set back the development of the US's atomic bomb projects by a year or two? Perhaps Fermi would have convinced Mussolini to begin the Italian bomb project, or his non leaving would get him kidnapped by the Germans to help with their project.
Another possible option for an ahistoric game would be Japan deciding not to attack Pearl Harbor, thus the Americans do not enter the war until later, perhaps not until 1943. It was not until the war began for the US that the Manhattan project got any serious funding and resources, so with a two year delay on starting, then the American's bomb would not be ready until 1947?
I am not saying the a-bomb should not be in the game, it defiantly should, however it's development arc could have been easily altered by particular events, some of which will certainly come up in ahistorical games.
