Distance modifier to AE looks pretty much random to me. I, as Ottomans, conquer Aragon and get relatively small AE in Papal States. Then I conquer Kongo, which is also catholic and then get similar AE with Papal States. Also when I conquer Brunei, I get a lot of AE with all the sunnis everywhere. At the same time, conquering orthodox Byzantium doesn't affect anybody much, not even Balkan orthodox countries, let alone Russia.

I found the mention of "per hop" modifier, but I can't make any sense out of it.

As been said in the post above, it is a combination of [1] culture, [2] religion, [3] diplomatic relation and [4] distance. Nothing random about it.
You're picking out a single component of the equation and then surprised when the result is the same without giving any thought to the weight of the other components.

It's culture, religion and distance, not just distance. Those more like the country you're eating get more upset than those less like it.

Nevertheless, you get same AE values at wildly different distances sometimes, despite both target countries being same religion as each other and both being different groups to the group conquered.

In a run as Garwhal I had coalition levels of AE with Morocco before I touched even East Africa, so something wonky is going on with that...closer nations were only ~20-30 AE more than them, while West Africa had no AE at all (could confirm they could see me by that point too).

As a general rule, you will get less AE with nations farther away from your target. However, this effect has a cap, and past a certain distance you will get the same AE with all visible nations with the religion of your target. It's not a lot, but if you're conquering quickly, it adds up quickly. This is why you want to expand into the Sunni bloc as soon as possible, because if you wait until you can see all of Africa and Asia you're going to get some world-wide coalitions.

Minimum AE. Always existed, but they removed the full AE reduction from unknown nations a while ago for whatever reason, that's why you haven't noticed it before.

They can't join a coalition against you afaik, but getting -100 AE before you even see them is easy.

Lots of fun to have a map reveal followed by a massive coalition
