I have read hints that researching too far ahead of the historical year, makes the research much slower. Is this true, or is the slower research simply a result of later techs being more expensive in general?

I never research a tech more than a few months before its start date, unless there is nothing else useful to research at all - for example, if you start researching a 1939 tech that would normally take 3 months in July 1937, it will take 8 or 9 months.

? so then you can start building to that new tech level in 38. it is worth it but you will sacrifice researching something else (due to the time lag) (which aint bad if you're playing a major with 5 slots. )

there are only a few items that i sometimes research ahead ... INF upgrades and Land Doctrines. Only because they can affect so many units and potentially be a big deal. Otehrwise, the hit you take on the other techs that you could have researched, but didn't frequently is not worth it.

There are some that are worth researching early.

The Machine Tools I research a bit early, along with the assembly lines, but ususally not more than 6 months in advance.

The biggest ones are Infantry, especially '41 Infantry. The jump from '39 to '41 Infantry is the biggest one step gain for any unit, IMO. It is well worth starting to research in early '40 so you can start building and upgrading to get them.

I find that the research lag is a bit worth it, following my strategy I go for 39 infantry in late '37 so that by the end of 1939 they can all be upgraded and more powerful. I usually d this with smaller countries so that the army is smaller but stronger in case of a conflict...

Germany '36 campaign runs out of same year techs pretty rapidly, except for the air/sea doctrines. So you are forced to pre-research something.

Industrial-asembly lines, medium tanks, infantry, computers, and land doctrines always get one-year-advance research by me.
