So, all this talk of narrative and roleplay inspired me to GM an Age of Wonders game!
Here in my family, we mostly grew playing the games in the series, so I decided to create a short adventure for my sister and friends to celebrate the release of Age of Wonders 4! ^^
We used Savage Worlds, and created the following party:
This is Fani Wintergaze, Frostling Shaman. Played by my sister - frostlings are her favorite race!
Ti'jara Nightwalker, Tigran Rogue, played by a first time TTRPG player and newcomer to the series! ^^
Aslani Suntouch, Archon Priestess, played by my childhood friend! ^^
Elleren Dewstep, Elf Ranger, played by my girlfriend - who loves playing elves!
Drekkoth Bronzeheart, Draconian Warrior, played by my brother-in-law, who often plays the brutish types, XD
---
I created a very simple adventure set in the waning days of the Second Age of Wonders, when shadow demons started appearing over Athla. The party were all composed of refugees or mercenaries looking for solace or opportunities in the Norwood. Those of you who played Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic may remember, however, that in Julia's first scenario, the Norwood is being beset by the forces of the Phobian Empire...
Their first scene was in the abandoned Forest Edge Inn. After confirming that the Inn had been deserted weeks before, they met a glade runner from the elves, that let them known of the many troubles besetting the fairy folk. They learned that Queen Julia was trying to form a resistance against the Phobian Empire, in the northern town of Rienfalas. The party was left to ponder wether to take the long way around, or risk a shorter path through the human territory. The players were feeeling foolhardy this saturday, so they decided to go "short and dangerour".
And well, that decision came back to haunt them later! XD
In order to move unseen through the human territory, they needed to make several stops and cautious progress, and their guide rolling a Critical Failure meant the journey was taking a heavy toll on their stamina... They ended up ambushed, days later, by a cavalry force of shadow demons!
It was a fierce battle, but even though many were wounded, they managed to prevail over their foes! ;D
They eventually arrived beaten and tired, but alive, in Rienfalas...
In the next session, they're probably meeting with the Fairy-Queen Julia herself, and I'll have the opportunity to portray one of my favorite characters from the Age of Wonders series! ^^

We all had a blast, and playing in this setting brought a lot of good memories from me and my sister ^^
We're all looking forward for the next session - and some of the player's are already asking for this to become a longer campaign game! XD
