Excellent inclusion, but I really wish you had merged them with the already present buildings and special compounts. Creating anomalies on an empty tile feels kinda underwhelming.

The idea I think is that those are excavations (most start with "uncover it from sand"), you can see the site nicely on the unique battlefield for instance if you battle an army over it. And because they can generate on the map further in your game it's even more logical as it can be explained like "our sensors picked up a new signal" etc.
