The reformation does seem nerfed (just a bit, at least) in the latest patch(es).

What's funny -in my current run- is that the protestants didn't have much success, and already lost a CoR. Reformed only has 1 nation. It's ca. 1555, and a whole bunch of non-protestants joined the league, and Austria didn't get many at all on his (Catholic) side. So the emperor is going to be usurped & pummeled by a bunch of non-protestants... which will result in the triumph of the meager protestants.

I have a feeling they won't be very popular within the HRE, once they get the crown, though. The league war won't be the final say, methinks.

I noticed in my last game that Bohemia converted to Reformed but not a single Reformed CoR ever formed in Bohemia or elsewhere so it died out quickly, kind of annoyed me because I was Protestant and wanted more allies for the League War. I think it's probably a bug.

My game also (Don't know the version, but probably the newest as it was around 30.12) had this problem. Reformation started in Ulm and converted some of it's neighbors creating a blue pocket, and then no country converted. After around 12 years Bremen in the North became the second Protestant country - and the last. When it comes to Reformed it was me and Scotland.
Protest League obviously surrendered to the Emperor.
Centres of reformation were spawning, but there simply were no countries to change religion.

The reformation mechanics dissapoint me to no end. The protestants/reformed are underpowered, plain and simple.
Firstly 6 Centers of Reformation (CoR) isn't enough to cover most of Europe coherently because the way CoR spawn is deeply flawed.
Here is a screenshot of my current Denmark campaign on very hard (1.24.1):

7O4F2fS.jpg

Of the 3 Protestant CoR, the first one spawned in Livland, the second one in Hamburg and third one in Dithmarschen.... o_O

So far of the 3 Reformed CoR, the first reformed one spawned in Sjaelland according to the pop up message, but then the icon for CoR disappeared! Yet the province is still of the reformed religion?!

I just lost it at that point and rage quitted for the day, all the Centers of Reformation are in the Baltic !

This makes the Age of Reformation age objectives the hardest to attain when there barely any provinces to convert and barely any Nations to force religion upon if you're catholic.

What's the point of modelling the French Wars of Religion if they never happens to AI France, and only to the player if they let it happen for roleplaying reasons. Whats the point of modelling the Spanish inquisition and counter-reformation when no CoR can harras them seeing all are clumped in a cluster within northern Germany or the Baltic.

It's time to put more strick geographical weights on the CoR.

At least one Reformed CoR should spawn in the Guyenne/Gascony/Vasconia Area, it would harass France and the Iberians.

Another one in Transylvania/Alföld area to harass Ottomans, Hungarians, Poles and Austrians.

Lastly the third one in the low countries, Switzerland, central/southern germany as usual.

Protestant CoR tend to be more historically balanced as they spawn in correct geographical zones such as Scandinavia, Northern Germany, British Isles for the most part. Alas, with reformed CoR often spawning in those same areas there is too much redundant overlap.

Another option is to add 1 extra Center of Reformation for both Protestant and Reformed for a total of 8, but it could be tricky balance wise and the reformation could become OP against Catholics. Still, it seems easier to just distribute the current 6 CoRs more comprehensively within Europe.

in my 733 hours of gameplay I have yet to see the Protestant league win without my direct involvement or France and Spain break a sweat due to religious turmoil...

Edit: Typos, rephrasing...

I saw on the internet (Reddit, Youtube) that there's a bug when you change the starting date to 1820~ and move it back to 1444, don't know if this is really a connection but in a game that I started this way, the reformation was just neutralized.

In another recent game I started (without changing starting date at all) all central europe was covered with blue, only Austria remained Catholic. Normally it depends on luck I guess, whether the reformation fails or not; for the reformation to beat the Emperor they need support from large nations outside of the Empire, which can be a struggle unless the Emperor's got rivalries full of hatred with the likes of France, Russia and the Ottomans.

Yes there's quite a lot of RNG involved and that's my main criticism.

From my point of view, players miss a lot of features and mechanics when the Reformation is lackluster, for many, we're talking paid features and I would like to experience them on every European Campaign. I honestly believe that by casting a wider net with the Centers of Reformation spawn weights, the player will only benefit. I'm not asking for strict historical authenticity, just for CoR spawns to be well distributed from west to east on every game so as many nations as possible get to experience the religious turmoil.

Here's another screenshot from my Hungary Campaign in 1.24.1. As you can see already 2 Protestant CoR spawned just 4 provinces afar from each other :(, Oldenburg and Hamburg. It's so redundant, needless overlapping again. Im seeing this a lot in my latest campaigns.

In my current Sardinia-Piedmont game, one Protestant CoR spawned in Riga and two Reformed CoR appearing in Northern Germany. Most of Germany has converted to Reformed by now, but only Livonia (not Livonian Order) is Protestant and the entire Age of Reformation passed by without religious leagues.

same issue here... just no CoR at all.

As mentioned above i find it quite annoying that huge features like religious wars and the chaos they may cause are missing when this happens. For me it realy broke my latest game for me.

I had the exact same problem in my latest Granada run, I'm gonna make a bug report and link this post. Maybe they solved the bug for the protestants but not for the reformed.

I have a screenshot at home of the funniest HRE I had ever seen.
The protestant league won the Thirty Years War (because it had the support of Russia, France, Great Britain (protestant) and Ottomans) but there was only a SINGLE Protestant Country inside the HRE (Wurttemberg I think), so the Imperial Authority was always zero (or drifting to zero after the death of the current Emperor and there was only Wurttember as elector, always voting for himself.
