Age of Reformation Question on Unify Culture objective

Sorry if this has been asked before. Playing as France, and have just entered the age of reformation. Looking at the objectives for that age I expected one, unify culture, to trigger immediately. I own every French culture province in Europe. The only thing I can think of is I have done some colonization, and have a subject colonial nation Antilles, which is obviously also French culture.


So does anyone know if the colonial nation means I can’t trigger this particular objective?

I thought that this was a bug that was fixed in the last patch? Certainly I have the objective completed with 7 colonial nations as Spain. Are you sure there is not an odd island somewhere that you don't have control of or similar - I briefly thought the bug was still happening because I hadn't realised that Portugal had lost one of their little islands before I vassalised them.

That forming a colonial nation denies you that objective while having no actual way to avoid colonial nations (you can't control those provinces directly) seems kinda a screw for the colonists for no real reason...

If this is intended, what is the rationale?

Having it be owned by subjects including CNs now counts. I triggered it as France in current game while having 4 CNs.

To the OP: my best guess is maybe you don't have all the Waloon provinces. Liege is Waloon, along with a few other provinces around there.

Ok so the colonial nations shouldn't prevent this? Right I'm at work now so i can't check but I'm sure (88% or 89%) sure I have all the European French provinces. I'll check again later, and if I still can't figure it out I'll post a screenshot.

Subjects 100% should not prevent the age objective.

I'm guessing you are missing a HRE province.

Post a save game if you can.

The Both the Knights Hospitaller and Cyprus are French cultured nations as well.
While they do not own any French lands at the start date of 1444, they could have conquered and culturally enriched some provinces.

Also do check if any of your colonial lands have been taken over by other nations. Occasionally colonial nations get themselves wrapped into wars where they don't call in the mother country.

This annoys me to no end. I have to place armies babysitting my colonies and declare no-cb wars against random natives that have invaded them, since they never call me in defensive wars. Until they can defend themselves against all their native neighbors, it's a constant hit on stability.

as I know its your culture group matters not your main culture wich means if you are german culture group unless you conquered entire holy roman empire you cant get benefits of it
on the other hand ming is allready starting with it

Ok so I've found the problem, and the short answer is I'm an idiot.

I was so busy checking my border in the low lands and with the HRE in the culture map mode and considering the colonial nation issue I didn't even see what was right in front of me. My pandering to the Papacy means Avignon is still a Papal State province.

I can only apologise for wasting everyone's time, and not show my face around here for at least a week.

Unless you are Castille or Austria, you should never pander to the Pope.

Well. At least this thread showed me that they fixed the CN bug Must have missed that in the patch-notes.

Threaten the big hat over that province and there's a solid chance he'll resign himself to his fate of being Italian and getting out of your French lands.

If he refuses, kick him into Rome only and hey you now have a solid foothold in Italy.

Unrelated: I'm a terrible Catholic don't follow my advice if you want to avoid upsetting the Pope.

Bonus points if you do it while being Papal Controller - which France can fairly reliably get early in the game.
