Ran the events until all of the id overlaps were removed and obvious errors corrected (ie. vassalization is { type = vassal which = TAG } not what I was doing :) .)

Added Russian, Spanish, Austrian, Papal events. (Bug checked)
Added preliminary English and French events. (Not bug checked/finalized)

For some reason, the Roman Empire event is buggy and causing CTDs within the month. The main line of events has no listed errors, but typically will CTD within a few years. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Why would Gibbon criticise the Byzantines? IIRC one of his major points against the OR was that he felt the pinched all their good stuff from the Byzants

LOL :) I apprecitate your help with these events, so this is meant in all friendliness but you've obviously never read Gibbon. :D He largely blamed Christianity for the decline of the true Roman Empire so a defensive Christian Empire was always anathema to him. The last two books of the series are just an unending series of insults :) and he's a lot of the reason that Byzantium has had such a bad historical taste until the last few decades.

Although, yeah, he thought the Turks were savages.

My basic thought is if the parts of the Empire he most loathed were still around - the defensive and slavish aspects of it - he would write the same book he wrote in real life; whereas if the Empire reformed, so would his opinion of it.

As of now, I know of no major errors or crashes with these events.

I don't know why the Emperor of the Romans event was causing such funky effects, but as long as the cb shields are handed out in two events, the system is perfectly stable. Does anyone know if there's just a maximum number of commands one can put in any given action selection? or if there's a limit on cb shields at a time?

Also, added deathdates to all events involving triggers, as this should make them, yknow, work. :)

Created a website http://www.geocities.com/jayspear/ to allow the events to be downloaded and used a little more easily.

I just started reading Gibbon last week, is it worth continuing? :rolleyes:

I found it old-fashioned and to much of vague reasoning about the decline of Roman moral as a reason for the decline of the Empire. To me, it said much more about the time it was written in than about the time it was written about. I stopped after a third of it.

As far as I've understood it's supposed to be worth reading from a litterary point of view whereas the scientific value of the books is very slight.
I'll see if I can manage to plough though it, though. :)

There's a quote hanging around that Gibbon lived out his sexual life in his footnotes. It's great reading in the Grand Style, but yeah, it's just as moralistic and self-serving as the old historians whose works Gibbon used.

Not much use as history, but piecemeal, it can make a great read. Try the sections on Justinian, Irene and Zoe (Book 2?) if you want to get a sense of his hatred for the Byzantines. :)

Well...

Is it a moral failing if I don't want to repost three pages of events every time I fix some code? :) I promise I'll get around to it - once all the events are well-tweaked and appropriate, it'll be useful to see if the events are appropriate and worthy of inclusion.

All the same, in the meantime, just download the newest event files from the site and feel free to note any oddities still occurring. There are currently at least three major event paths - one for fantasy Pagan BYZ, one for orthodox BYZ, and one for catholic BYZ.

My current game has been the fun pagan one :) - I love that Anatolia and the Balkans are a solid wall of ritual sacrifice and orgies :D, but the massive inflation and low INNOV are starting to get to me - I sacked Venice but couldn't end the war at all favorably because they're 8 army techs ahead and every time I assault Crete and Cyprus, I get my 40k ass handed back in hat form by 2 and 3k armies.

Anyway, I've noticed and fixed various problems with the prince events and the renaissance (ie, it should fire even if religion isn't ortho.) I just noticed that some of the Orthodox minor events (eg, Georgia and Nubia asking for help with their wars) aren't religion dependent, which they should be.

The next version will fix that, move the court composer random event into the 1600s where it belongs, correct the triggers on the Alexandrian thieves in the night event, and try to get rid of Venice's seaport. Can you *not* removebuilding shipyard?

aaah, sounds interesting... :D
I've heard that the siege and assault on Constantinople in 1453 is the best read in all the books.

Also, don't bother updating the forum all the time. Not that many browse through the entire thread eadch day anyway... :D

Why shouldn't you be able to remove a shipyard by event?

I liked the stuff he cribbed off Procopius about Theodora's reenactment of "Leda and the Swan ... and the John ... and the Hockey Team" myself, but to each his own ;)

It's just a caveat to anyone who is coming through for the first time. I suppose I could have put it at the front end, but I was already here... :)

Why shouldn't you be able to remove a shipyard by event?

The second event fired and the fortress, manufactory and COT disappeared, but the shipyard didn't. I double checked with Havard's guide and the syntax is correct. Don't get it...

Check the bugforum and see if it's known not to work and report it if it's unknown.
Also, try to make an event that only removes the shipyard to make sure it's nothing else that screws things up.

BYZ HRE and Great Council events

As I've mentioned on another thread, I still haven't been able to debug the "Germany in Flames" event. I'm working on it, but don't use this event yet, as it will CTD:

Although the entire month has been given over to celebration in Constantinople and the monks of Mt. Athos have finally given their blessing the submission to Rome, this is by no means the reunification of the Empire. The next emperor will have to win an election just as this one did, which is by no means assured.
Moreover, to gain the position, the Emperor had to bribe the electors lavishly and promise to support the independence of lands already annexed to Austria. And there was only one way that was going to happen..."

The breaking point between the two faiths east and west had been when Pope Benedictus VIII had inserted the filioque clause into the Nicene Creed, overriding two ecumenical councils merely on his own authority. On the abdication of the Pope Gregory XII, argument had been closed in the West and papal supremacy became a fact if not a doctrine until the Vatican Council of 1869. And yet, in the backrooms, theologians worked long into the night trying to find some sort of compromise over the 'filioque' addition to the Nicene Creed. The premise that the Holy Spirit proceeds also from the Son was only weakly justified by the Scholastics - and directly contradicted statements of Our Lord. Further, the Pope had ignored not only the Nicene and Constantinople Councils themselves when he had altered the Creed - he had ignored Ephesus as well, which had explicitly prohibited any modification. And yet, with the vast majority of Christendom under his care, he was certainly not going to concede the error at such a high-profile conference. The problem seemed intractible."

Partially because of a decision at the Council of Nicaia and partially out of simple stubborness, the Eastern Orthodox churches to this day do not use the Gregorian calendar for reckoning Easter, even if everything else in their lives observes it. In 1578 Pope Gregorius XIII had commissioned an inquiry into why the Passion week was falling out of harmony with the seasons and discovered that leap years needed to be excluded from the centuries non-divisible by four and that two weeks needed to be omitted. Peasants at the time rioted, thinking the new calendar a conspiracy of their landlords to cheat them out of rent. Certainly, the issue of papal autocracy had already been covered, but just as certainly, the church council had erred not as a matter of spiritual guidance but of simple scientific knowledge."

After all, there can't be Catholicism without the pope on your side... After I get the HRE event to work, this sequence will be the next thing to clean up, but the scripting of province by province events will be on hiatus while we figure out how MKJ's map will affect it.

jay.

Added final French and English events, new Papal States events re: BYZ as HRE &c, new Orthodox church events, new Protestant Reformation events :cool:, and draft versions of BYZ HRE and Great Reunification events (that I still can't get to work - grrr :mad: .)

jay.

Perhaps your "Germany in Flames" event is too long. Have you tried cutting the commands (like making a try with a handful of those german provinces).

Or you could cut the "trigger Germany in flames" command in the preceding event, and introduce in the trigger part "event = 138903", and date + offset + deathdate, in case the problem lies in having to run the game for a few days before allowing independences.

I'm dumb.

Fixed it. Kinda.

There's a two day offset before the game realizes you own the provinces, which makes it tricky to fire the next event...

Just a quick question, the event that changes Alexandria to Greek culture gives -50000 manpower, isn't that a tad excessive? I mean its one thing to hurt them, but another entirely to totally cripple them, especially since its not an a or b choice, but a forced route. Other than that, I'm throughly enjoying the events, keep up the good work!

First, I'm curious if everything else has been working normally for you so far - I've been busy at work, tossed offline by my ISP and researching possible royal lines to create more realistic succession issues. I've worked to make everything stable, but (given over 400 events) it's fantastic if it actually is :)

next,

Code:
#The Egyptian Campaign#
event = {
	id = 138212
	random = no
	country = BYZ
	name = "The Egyptian Campaign"
	desc = "Until its loss to the Arabs, Egypt had been the breadbasket to the Empire; its fertility had funded the universities and libraries of Alexandreia. Far more important now, though, was the recovery of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre. However poor and distant, this was the land where the Savior had lived and died and lived again. The miracle of our recovery has convinced the populace that we are blessed by God for this purpose. Every able man in the Empire has gathered for the fleet at Constantinople. Unbidden, the Logothetes have purchased cannon with their own estates."

	action_a ={
		name = "Thine will be done!" #what's 'Deus vult' in Greek? =)
		command = { type = INF which = -2 value = 35000 }
		command = { type = CAV which = -2 value = 15000 }
		command = { type = ART which = -2 value = 40 }
                command = { type = manpower value = -50000 } #meant it about everybody showing up
		command = { type = provincetax which = -1 value = -1 }
		command = { type = provincetax which = -1 value = -1 }
		command = { type = provincetax which = -1 value = -1 }
		command = { type = provincetax which = -1 value = -1 }
	}
}

Is this the event you're talking about? It doesn't change Alexandreia to Greek culture (that's event 138276.)

My intention was temporarily to eviscerate the current manpower pool (ie, reduce it to 0, and then let it grow normally from there) to reflect everyone showing up for war. You get fewer men, but they're free. Now, if that somehow permanently affects the manpower supply, I do need to fix that...
