Perhaps this thread ought to be stickied with the rest for regions, since Cyprus does not appear to be anywhere.

Vanilla cyprus is pathetic, while current AGCEEP cyprus is not up to the standard of quality that many countries have now achieved.

I have started a whole series of events for Cyprus that I will be posting here for discussion. IMHO Cyprus has the potential to become a new crusader state, like the knights of Rhodes, because of the title to the kingdom of Jerusalem. This potential has not been realized so far, and I doubt if anybody has ever played Cyprus.

I will be giving real history precedence over fantasy in the events previous to the 1474 cession to Venice.
I count on your help for this enterprise ;)

Interesting. I think you should make an alternative to the vassalization by Egypt, just in case the player is keen on all-out fighting. It should not be easy, perhaps use an alternative monarch (Janus being executed - seems logical, another Lusignan using the opportunity to reach the throne).

And in all cases, you need an event to break the vassalization if you want the sequence run smooth with Venice (otherwise, the vassal command won't work).

Well, Cyprus was actually vassalized by Egypt all the time to 1474. Paying tribute and all. If the player wants to break it he just needs 1 diplomat. The stability cost is small unless he has conquered Genoa by then ;)

I know that this events don't offer much choice, but the alternative is to depart from history, in my opinion unjustifiedly.

There would be plenty of monarch choices for a human player in 1474, and I count on your help to find a Frankish candidate (perhaps a Burgundian bastard?) to replace the extinct Lusignans.

He was forced to recognize the Bey as his suzerain and pay a huge ransom of 200,000 ducats before he was released. This success also allowed Barsbay to gain an upper hand (albeit temporarily) in his dealings with Venetian traders."

You need an breakvassal-event for the AI, since CYP must be vassalized to VEN later.

You allowed the choice for the venetian player to divert of history, in your recent events for Foscari... ;)

The AI will only choose a b) option 1-in-18 times.

The thing is that Janus was hostage : what if nobles at home did not want to save him ? Would they accept to pay tribute, let him come back, and then dishonoring ? Those nobles would still have Janus as monarch ; it's best for them to refuse to bow, let the heathens kill their king, and elect a new king in his stead. It's a cleaner coup. :)

Don't hope so : we're already havind difficulty to find suitable grooms for Mary. :p

However, there's Antoine of Burgundy, for a skilled bastard. Great general too. ;)

Yes, vassalage broken and Cyprus inherited in the same event, just as it happened. The Venetians asked the Mammeluks permission for the anexation.

Don't ask consistency from me :D. Let me think about the possibilities longer. The overall history of Venice does not change whatever you choose.

There were two peasant rebellions that were put down by the regent. There was no other Lusignan to support but his son as far as I know. Half of the rescue was paid before the Mammeluks would release him. Not only the king was rescued, but also quite a few of the cypriot prisoners enslaved. Although it is never impossible that events could have differ, I see no signs that they could have happened differently. You can always kill every king that goes to battle at every battle that he fights, but I see no need for it. At least if you want to follow history, which I do.

Sometimes a monarch has a choice that makes sense in the context of the game. But if for example Janus decides not to provoke the Mammeluks, then he is not captured, Cyprus is not submitted, Jacques has no supporter, Charlotte is not overthrown, Venice does not get Cyprus and the whole history falls flat. The player misses all the history of Cyprus in exchange for basically nothing.

Regarding the anexation of Venice, then it is different. I will put a double insurance so the AI always gives itself to Venice, but the player has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Obviously he is not going to bend to Venice, so he will be at war with them, and then when he wins, he has to choose a new ruler. The populace will support a Greek Palaeologus candidate that will convert the state to orthodox (both religious and tech), will relinquish the titles to Jerusalem and Armenia, and claim the Byzantine Empire. The catalan merchants will propose the Napolitan Trastamaras, and when Naples disappears, they will claim it from Aragon and Spain (Italian culture). The nobles will propose a Frankish ruler (from Burgundy if possible), and when Burgundy disappears, they will claim its cores and French culture (will need your help with that). So a human player gets three games.

lawkeeper said:

He will do the job. Do you think he wants the title of king of Jerusalem? It is quite prestigious. Juan Carlos I of Spain is still claiming it.

Charlotte called for help from her half-brother Jacques, who had the Queen’s foster-brother Thomas murdered. He was forbidden from entering the palace, and was impeded from attending the coronation, that as archbishop of Nicosia he should have officiated. Jacques, as the favourite of his father, had expected to inherit the kingdom, indeed a possibility had Jean lived longer. But now he had few supporters if any. He had a bad press in the west and the Pope, the Hospitallers and Savoy were strong supporters of his half-sister. The Genoese were, as always, his enemies. So he went to Cairo, where he gained the support of Cyprus suzerain, the Mammeluk bey, that as a muslim and strange to the concept of bastardy, could not understand that the crown of his viceroyalty could be given to a woman."

Charlotte’s travels to materialize the help from the Hospitallers, Pope Pius II, and from her father-in-law the Duke of Savoy came to nothing. Louis of Savoy was willing to give some money, and Pius II a couple of galleys, the Hospitalliers were caught in the succesion of their High Master and did nothing. Jacques, who was well received by the locals, crowned himself in 1460, but was not recognized by Pius II, who saw him as an instrument of Islam. Only the Venetians, with a keen eye on business, changed their support from Charlotte to Jacques. In 1485 Charlotte ceded the three crowns of Cyprus, Armenia and Jerusalem to the Duke of Savoy. Very good events IMHO.

However, in event 3841's desc,

should be replaced by
Code:
In [b]1485[/b] Charlotte ceded the three crowns of Cyprus

An explanation on the player options for the next events for those following the thread:

Jacques II has the option of choosing to marry Leonora of Naples. This is set in a double trap system, so the AI will choose Caterina 323 times out of 324.

If Jacques chooses Leonora, Cyprus will be at war with Venice. Jacques still dies when he should, and Charlotte comes to the throne until her dead (1487), then the regency council will have the same choices as if the player choses to marry Caterina, Jacques III is never born (not that it matters).

The married by proxy took place at the Hall of the Signoria of the ducal palace on July 1468. But due to the outstanding situation of Cyprus to control the trade route with levant, a new candidate appeared. Milord, Ferrante I of Naples is offering his daughter Leonora as a bride to you. This is upsetting the Venetians very much. Their envoy Domenico Gradenigo has threatened with supporting Charlotte if you join their enemy of Naples. Same explanation here:

The player has the option of supporting the catalan coup through the double trap system. The AI will churn through the coup 323 out of 324 times. If the player does support the coup he will be at war with Venice (This line is put to sleep by the Leonora-Charlotte line of the above post. Only one war is imposed for "wrong" choices).

Instead of Caterina alone as Queen, the player will have a treacherous Catherina who dumps the vile Venetians and marries Alonso d'Aragona. This line of events bypasses the final choice and takes on the Naples line directly for the after 1489 events.

He had the support of the Catalan party in the court, and he obtained a letter from the anti-Venetian pope Sixtus VI denouncing Andrea Cornaro and Marco Bembo as murderers of Jacques, addressed to one of the conspirators, the archbishop of Nicosia, Luis Perez Fabregues. With Napolitan reinforcements the coup took place. The Catalans killed the uncle and cousin of Queen Caterina and her personal surgeon in front of her eyes and kept her prisoner. The plan was to marry Charla, illegitimate daughter of Jacques, to Alonso, illegitimate son of Ferrante that had been adopted by Charlotte. But the Venetians were not going to sit still, and they sent a military expedition to rescue Caterina. The conspirators jumped into the Napolitan galleys and left the island. My lord, if the conspirators had had more support, perhaps they would have stayed, but that would mean a war with Venice for sure. But it would be a better idea to marry Alonso to Caterina"

But Caterina was still young, and there were always talks of diplomats attempting to get to her with marriage offers. Ferrante was entertaining the idea of marrying her to Alonso, a plan she could have favored. Good to see that everybody thinks they are good as they are ;)

We haven't finished yet the plot line, but in the meantime:

The crusading random events. One against the Ottoman Empire, and another against the Mammeluks. They are both duplicated to have a slight chance of seeing them in a game. The reward is very good, but there is a steep price to pay, which is war. A weak Cyprus can get a lot out of defending the island until the enemy gets tired (always with the risk of being annexed). For a strong Cyprus this is an all good event (except for BBs). The call is tough for an intermediate Cyprus, that may be risking some continental possesions.

Henri Lusignan, prince of Galilée, was a cousin of Janus. His grandson Herion Lusignan was the last legal claimant to the throne of Cyprus according to some sources. He seem to have had some reputation, but died at the disaster of Khirikotia.

Lawkeeper: I made up the info and stats of Antoine. If he is to show up somewhere else, he should be consistent. I also named him Antoine de Valois-Burgundy. I don't know if it is correct. I know next to nothing about Burgundy except for the Joan of Arc issue.

Here's the Antoine for Burgundy. I don't remember when he died however, but allowing him to lead armies until 1511 is a long time IMHO (he's a son of Philippe, brother to Charles the Bold).

Been busy latel, but I have a few comments on the first post of the thread. Cyprus can really need attention of it's own. There are related events in the MAM, NAP and VEN files, but I'm sure you know that. It would be interesting if all the claimers of the kingdom of Jerusalem could some event/s out of it. I don't remember what others claim it, but from Isaac Brock listing them I recall Anjou.

1st event: could be replaced by a perm CB from start. We dont have other events for things that happened before start. Background can be nice I admit, but I'm uncertain as to where to draw the line. Genoa should have MA from start too.
2nd event: could add badboy

Lawkeeper: thanks, I'll fix it. The date thing is that the player gets him between 1489 and 1500 and should enjoy him a little bit. I hate getting a leader for 6 months :D. He can be a very good example of how healthy is the climate of Cyprus, but I will shorten him a little. Is that Philip the Good or a different one?

Norrefeldt: Thanks for the input.
Regarding 1st event: Yes it could be a perm CB with a deathdate, but what I wanted to do is to keep the CB only until the player conquests any of Genoa's provinces or until the capture of Famagusta whichever comes first, alas it appears that CBs cannot be removed.
About the before start thing, I'll rewrite and rename the event. For every king of Cyprus the recovery of Famagusta was foremount, since it could not be accepted and crippled the country economy, so it is a very present event. About Genoa MA, yes, you are right.
Regarding 2nd event BB, I disagree. It is not the case of the Barbary coast. Between the Christian countries it was seeing as a plus. Many other countries (i.e. KNI, TUR, GEN) did it with impunity against other religion countries. And Cyprus will have to struggle with very high BBs. Piracy in the mediterranean was a fact of life, different from the british corsairs IMHO. Funny that pirates don't show up in the mediterranean in EU2. I guess they would create mayhem in the early game since they are so strong.

Regarding the title of king of Jerusalem, for as long as there is a king in Cyprus the title is ours :D. The mess with the title of king of Jerusalem started when Cyprus was lost to the venetians who could not held a title. Savoy claimed it because of Charlotte and the Pope started to give it away and take it back.
My own opinion: it reverted back to the bey of the Mammeluks, suzerain of Cyprus and legal owner of Jerusalem. :D

The old venetian and napolitan cyprus-related events did not make much historic sense and will have to be either corrected or eliminated. Cyprus event 3841 does not have the option of keeping Charlotte because she had no chance of remaining in power, that option has been moved to a later event when she can get support from the venetians, the only ones that showed willingness to put troops over the table.

Events 3842, and 154001 had been supplanted by the catalan coup, that offers a similar choice and is historically more correct. Alfonso was never a candidate of any wedding since he was happily (or unhappily) married at that date with Ludovica Sforza IIRC. The candidate, Alonso appears to have been one of the many illegitimate sons of Ferrante that ended leaving almost no trace in history. Cyprus was too insignificant for Ferrante to compromise his heir.

Same thing with events 3843 and 154002. It is bothersome to see Venice losing Cyprus after so much they did to get it. Or worse to see it going to Naples in a very ahistoric way. They have been substituted by the abdication of Caterina Cornero (alternate pathway). Historically, Naples never had a chance of inheriting Cyprus, but I am open to discuss it.

This are the last events on my list. Notice that if you chose to stick with tried and bad Lusignans you get nothing. It is same old same old. The other choices in the "Great choice" ough to give three games in one to the player. He can choose to take over France, take over Italy, or take over the OE. He's got his job cut out for him.
