Indeed more than hold on - the Turks now respect and fear us where before they ridiculed the mighty Byzantine Empire. They could not defeat our armies or navies in open war out on the field of battle so instead they and their allies have chosen a more covert means of warfare. They have dispatched spies and assasins into the Empire, killing key Government officials and spying on our every move. We have largely ignored it because Byzantium was not ready for another Byzantine-Turk war, but this time they have gone too far. A kamikaze assasin attacked and murdered our magnificent Emperor Konstantinos XI Dragases in his throne room in front of the entire court! Naturally the assassin was immediately arrested and subsequently publically executed. We are certain one of the Turk/Arab states are behind this but are not sure which. EVENTHIST15013; With the death of Emperor Konstantinos we stand at a crossroads for there are two candidates for the throne. The late Emperors' brother Demetrios, Duke of Morea, who is the natural successor as the late Emperor had no children. And the Emperor of Trebizond, Ioannes Kommenos. Now Demetrios is the natural heir but he comes from a dynasty which in recent years has become highly unpopular with the peasantry and nobles alike - even with the recent revival, they are still an unpopular lot and the Kommenos family in Trebizond are highly respected throughout the Orthodox world. Many feel that the Kommenos would make for a much more competent leadership than the current dynasty. Who should we choose? Demetrios or Ioannes?;;;;;;;;;;10579
EVENTHIST15014; It has been a little over a year since Empress Zoe II assumed the throne from her father over her incompetent brother; and it had quickly become apparent she was the wiser choice as heir. She was a brilliant diplomat and highly able administrator, almost the opposite of her father who was the epitome of "Warrior-King". However, though a brilliant administrator - she could not be in two places at once and her constant travelling between Trebizond and Constantinople was wearysome for her and she decided that she must either appoint a "Regent" to govern Trebizond in her stead or incorporate it fully into her Empire. EVENTHIST15015; Empress Zoe feeling the pressure of governing two separate and independent Empires decided to appoint a Regency in Trebizond. This Regency would be a hereditary position that would effectively rule like the Monarchy but always be answerable to the Imperial family in Constantinople. EVENTHIST15016; Emperor Dauid II Kommenos rose to the throne of the Empire upon the "mysterious" death of his father, Emperor Manuel V Kommenos. It has long been suspected that Dauid himself was responsible for the death of his father, especially since a year after his ascension the rest of his family died in a boating "accident" - this compounded with the incompetence and sheer laziness of the spoiled Emperor has caused some of the Nobles to outright rebel. The Nobility and peasantry have long been unhappy with their lazy, spoiled brat of an Emperor. And after many attempts to get the Emperor to begin to take his duties seriously the Nobles have finally had enough. Those who have revolted are determined to remove Dauid by force and place the descendant of Emperor Konstantinos Dragases on the throne. Dauid was reported to have thrown a fit of rage when he heard news of the revolt and ordered it to be brutally crushed and all the revolters to be executed.;;;;;;;;;;10582
EVENTHIST15017; After the Nobles' Revolt Emperor Dauid could no longer be accussed of being Idle, he was convinced that the Nobles wouldn’t have rebelled if the peasantry hadnt supported them. Which was partly true - but the majority of the people in Byzantium felt that even though Dauid was incompetent - it was still Treason to revolt and so did not take part. However Dauids' belief in the guilt of the peasantry was ironically the cause of the peasants eventually doing what he had earlier accused them of. He begin to clamp down on the entire state, imposing a Imperial curfew and raising taxes to almost oppressive levels for the people - except for the Nobles who were loyal to him and the army of course. The rapid increase in taxes and the steady decline in public freedoms eventually led to an Empire wide peasant revolt. They like the Nobles before them had, had enough and attempted to force the Emperor off the throne. The reports of Dauids anger at this were not exaggerated, his fury was terrible and his retribution was equally terrible. The revolt was to be brutally put down.;;;;;;;;;10583
EVENTHIST15018; Even though the Emperor bought off the army and the loyal Nobility with tax breaks and other rewards; even they could not ignore the Emperors' seemingly (and unbelievably) increasing incompetence and tyranny. Dauid was not just hated at home - but abroad too. And so a foreign supported popular rebellion began. Large parts of the army, the majority of the Nobles, and many many peasants rebelled against Emperor Dauid III. And once again Dauid ordered it put down with deadly force.;;;;;;;;;;10584
EVENTHIST15019; When the Kommenos family rose to the Throne in Byzantium, they exiled the Palaeologus family. Demetrios, former Duke of Morea, and brother to the late Emperor Konstantinos XI Dragases, led them west to find somewhere willing to grant them safe haven. Eventually had to return back east after being rebuffed by the Italian states, Aragon, Castille, France, England, and even Austria. Returning east they came to Poland - and surprisingly the Polish King granted them asylum - and there they stayed until the reign of Emperor Dauid III Kommenos in Byzantium. The Palaeologus descendants were granted some lands and an honourary title of Duke/Duchess in Poland, and Duke Micheal who was Duke around the time of the third rebellion against Emperor Dauid took it upon himself to reclaim the throne of Byzantium. Supported by an army from Poland-Lithuania and the Polish King, Micheal returned to Byzantium and marched on Constantinople unchallenged by the Byzantine army who by now had stopped taking orders from the Emperor. Even the defense forces of Mighty Constantinople did not stop Micheal at their gates and allowed him entry - Micheal marched with a host of warriors to the Palace where he arrested Emperor Dauid and seized his throne. Micheal had Dauid executed for treason against the Sovereign state of Byzantium, and crowned himself Emperor Micheal X Palaeologus.;;;;;;;;;;10585
EVENTHIST15020; In 1562 Duke Micheal of Poland came to Constantinople where he arrested the lawful Kommenos Emperor and had him executed. This Kommenos Emperor was Dauid III - and he had no heirs nor any siblings which left Trebizond without a royal family. Trebizond would either have to submit to the usurper the so called Emperor Micheal X - or elect its own leadership in much the same fashion as Genoa and Venice. Clearly the first option is completely unacceptable. So all that remains is the implementation of a Republican Council in Trebizond - which Venice and Genoa are eager to help is create.;;;;;;;;;;10586

Good job on those events!
One thing that I always missed in this Byzantium discussion was what actually triggered the revival (I can't find answers in the AGC-EEP discussion either). You suggest military reforms, which are of course the essence of a successful reconquest.
A reformation of the navy was impossible though, since Byzantiums entire shipbuilding industry (if we can even call it like that in 1419) was in the hands of the Venetians. Constantine XI was in command of about 10 small vessels (that actually performed brilliantly during the siege of 1453). An attempt to build a stronger fleet would not only consume enormous sums but also the Venetians would try to prevent that.
The reformation of the army is quite another thing and makes sense to me, but again, where should the money, and maybe even more important, the manpower, come from? The Pronaioi-system that had become popular in the post-Manzikert era had ceased to exist in the 14th century, and the regular army had really withered away to almost nothing in 1419.
Now I'm still wondering if it had been possible for Byzantium to define a strategy of making a very small professional force?
My opinion is that the Fall of Constantinople should be handled as an event that just springs up with the AI always choosing "OK (annexation of BYZ)". The player can of course choose the "No, its not over yet!!"-option, and thats where the reforms (post-1453) come in. Those should for the army in order to make a reconquest possible.

The events i wrote - and possibly every other fantasy event for Byzantium would be for the player not the AI, because the AI wouldnt survive long enough for the events beyond the council of Florence to kick in.

So it would go to reason that the player would have clawed back some kind of semblance of the Empire by the time of Konstantinos XI Dragases - so Constantine would be in the position to institute wide sweeping reforms of the armed forces to finish off the Turks...

Indeed, and I always argued that we should give BYZ an excellent leader that would use his tactical knowledge to compensate the lack of manpower and training so to speak. After 1453 that is, so we do not anger those people that want to have BYZ fall in their games.

Highly exotic idea, I know, but as far as I know about Byzantium in 1419 there would have been no other way!

It's good to see that some wants to work on an improved byz campaign. BUT that John of Nicea - is there any historical basis for him? If not, then maybe he is a bit too tough.
Don't get me wrong, I am all in favour of adding some life to byz, but I guess I am too much of a purist to be happy if the resurrection is practically thrown at the Byzantines.
4-4-5-1 is nothing less than an absolutely AWESOME leader, and giving him to byz at the time of their demise seems a bit odd.

He is a cavalry man you say. Why not reduce him to 4-3-4-0? Or if he was really a horses man 4-2-5-0. The latter might be the best, since that could explain why he was of no use during the final siege: No horses to tear through the Ottoman lines with! However it might be too much help. The Ottomans has plenty of infantry and artillery, but not much cavalry (which, IIRC, is very much like the Ottomans were historically). As there are many clear provinces, any human will naturally try to build as many cav as possible. Then when John comes along he suddenly has a force that can actually destroy even Memed II.

That means equality on the battlefield ... but is that what we want?

Check my post about the Byzantine-Trebizond events in the main editing forum ive included events and monarchs/leaders which allow for a resurgent Byzantium within the bounds of possibility but not too early...

Also for the Uber Byzantine leader i made Demetrios of Morea/Emperor Demetrios it...I made him shock strong, fire weak, and i fink i gave him a 1 in seige...i also made the monarch of him a great military leader but sucked in administrative affairs...also to balance it out a bit I scaled back the power of Konstantinos XI Dragases both monarch and leader slighty...

He doesnt arrive too early either so the Ottomans could and usually do wipe out the Byzantines before they get him - this is mostly for the player...

I have a few suggestions. I didn't read through the whole thread, so there may be some repeats. I apologize for those.

1. If Byzantium owns Rome at any point, they should have the option of moving the capital to Rome and becoming the Roman Empire. There should probably be gigantic penalties (in the form of reputation hits) and a huge stability hit if you choose to do so, however.
1a. If Byzantium owns all Italian provinces south of the Po (not including Sicily), the same event should fire, this time with three options. One is to decline, one is to move the capital and rename, with far smaller penalties and a negligible stability hit if the move is accepted (probably -1, Byzantium would gain italian culture, also, if it hadn't already). The last option would be to move the capital, rename, and convert to Catholicism, downside being a bigger stability hit (-4 I'd say), but the upside being a big reputation boost with the entirity of the Holy Roman Empire. Obviously, if they were already Catholic, the event would basically be a choice between not moving or moving it with a -1 stability and also gaining a small reputation boost.
2. If Byzantium owns Thrace, Smyrna, and Anatolia at any point, an event should fire that would allow a COT to open in Thrace. Ideally, I think if ANY country controls Thrace, Smyrna, and Anatolia, such an event should fire, not just Byzantium or the Ottoman Empire. The event would explain that the area is a major trade center and that controlling the entire channel would bring a big trade boost to the empire controlling it.
3. If Byzantium owns Lebanon, Samaria, and Judea, an event should fire giving Cyprus, The Knights, Krete (if it exists), and Ionia (if it exists) the option of changing their religions to Orthodox and becoming vassals of Byzantium. This would be due to the political and economic pressure of Byzantium owning most of the ports and land in the eastern Mediterranian. The benefits would be an increased reputation with Byzantium and a stability bonus (+1 or so), and obviously the downside is vassalization. A second event should then fire that gives Byzantium the option of becoming Defender of the Faith at no cost.
4. If Byzantium and Trebizond both exist when the Ottoman Empire is annexed by Byzantium, then an event should fire forcing Trebizond to become Byzantium's vassal, once again due to political pressure.
5. I think that Byzantium should be given a choice as far as "expansion direction" as it were. I would recommend vastly reducing the number of provinces that Byzantium considers "core provinces" (probably limited to modern day Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Rumelia/Dobrudja, and Georgia/Sochi/Armenia/Daghestan). Once Byzantium occupies a certain portion of these, an event would fire asking the player which direction he plans on taking his empire, with options along these lines:
"Westward, the future lies in Europe." (Byzantium would gain all of Italy, Austria, Hungary, Seibenburgen, Wallachia, and Moldova as core provinces.)
"Southward, the heathens must pay for their crimes." (Byzantium would gain the provinces between Awhaz and Tunisia as core provines.)
"Northward, we will master the Black Sea." (+1 Naval, Byzantium gains every province bordering the Black Sea as core provinces as well as many souther Russian provinces.)
6. I'd like a "Christian Byzantium" to have special events, as well, but I don't have any ideas for that at the moment, other than mirrors of the above events that don't convert others to Orthodox.

Legacy of Alexander event

Any thoughts about the following?
"The legacy of Alexander the Great"

Obviously, that post went fairly nowhere, but I think one thing that would be more in keeping with the culture would be something kinda similar, but involving a megalomaniacal monarch. The cult of Alexander was alive and well all through the Middle Ages, and was especially tempting to Roman/Byz generals. I'm not saying legions of people marched legions into the desert - it was impractical when Alex did it and only got more so over the years - but they did want too.

According to the Byzantine Refugee's event for VEN on AGCEEP, there was a Gracias Palaiologos who commanded the BYZ light cavalry & based on an article i read in wikipedia ages ago, he actually bested Mehmed in Morea after Demetrios surrendered. He later became a general for the venetian republic. Why not include him somewhere??

Another possible leader is Lucas Notares. Unfortunately some sources quote him as a lay theologian (priest?) & others as the Mega Dux. Historically he was executed on june 18 1453 for refusing 2 hand over his sons to Mehmed. He's also the one who said something bout preferring a turban 2 the cardinals hat.

Gamewise, Gracias should appear after 1453 as a Morea leader, while Lucas should appear if u don't lose Constantinople in 1453.

Hey, Aylo, post this into the AGCEEP Byz thread proper.

Loukas Notaras was the Megas Doux. That quote makes him out be a hard-core anti-unionist, but really he was a dignified civil servant who helped Constantine out with compromises in the service of getting Western aid.

There are a number of other leaders I've found reading through Runciman and The Immortal Emperor, too.
