Czechoslovakia is in Axis that's fine and good for those poor Czech people, at least until you liberate them.

Is Austria neutral or part of Germany? And if Hungary is going to be invited what about the Il-Duce?

Hmm.. Czechoslovakia among the Axis? The question is whether or not this aids or hinders you.. True, they may somewhat aid Germany, by building divisions, but on the other hand, it somewhat limits the Reich, if even a little, resource and IC wise..

Austria was anschlussed as per OTL, a few months before the Scenario started. Hungary usually joins sometime during 1939, and I must admit I missed it when they did. :eek:o That's what you get for going for some Cornflakes without pausing your game.

Italy will join at some point, you will definitely read about it.

The resource and IC loss is more than cancelled out by the fact that they are allied to the big red blob. :D

As for the Czechs: It doesn't really hinder me, because if/when I reach the Allied Armies will feel the poor Czechs as nothing more than a speedbump.

How true... the Armada, for instance, wasn't defeated neither by Drake nor the British weather. When the fleet was anchored off Calais, Medina Sidonia had the perfect plan that would allow him to beat Drake for good but then the Spamiards discovered the secret habits (about drinking, eating and so on) of the Brits through a prisioner. It was so outrageous that Medina Sidonia, using his wits said the famous but not recorded words:

-Una tortilla, mi reino por una tortilla (An omelette, my kingdom for an omelette).

Some other sources states, nevertheless, that he just said:

-The horror... the horror... the horror.

My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great (some greats later)- great-grandpa, who wasn't there (someone had to take care of the wives and sisters and daughters of the heroes while they were away. I know, it's awful and painful, but that's our duty, to take care of the lonely ladies), claimed that he just said:

-What the f***!!!!

The rest it's history.

Chapter 40/3

When Britain first at Heav'n's command
Arose from out the azure main;
Arose, arose, arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves!
(hopefully.....)

December 29th, 1938

Conference Room, Windsor Castle

The next briefing should normally have been delivered by the First Lord of the Admiralty but he had 'excused' himself during the recent short break with having urgent business at the office. Churchill suspected that it was rather the outright hostility in the room of the rest of the Cabinet. Standhope had been one of the few really prominent vocal opponents of the Empire Plan and had been in favour of simply cementing the status quo. It saddened Chuchill's heart to see his beloved Royal Navy in such incapable and narrow minded hands. But there was a silver lining on the horizon. Officers like Admiral Cunningham or the older, yet open-minded Admiral Pound were there and would take over as soon as Backhouse and the rest of the Gun school could be pushed aside without having the whole country exploding in uproar. What was needed was a convincing battle or even better an exercise that proved beyond doubt even to them that the Carrier was fast taking the mantle as queen of the seas and that the Royal Navy needed to adapt of Britain was to stay the worlds leading Naval Power. The fight of the Gun School against the Carrier School was as old as Naval Aviation, but as of late Churchill had admitted to himself that Cunningham, as the Carrier School's unofficial leader had already convinced him, convinced him that British Naval Air Power needed to be expanded.

For the moment however there was nothing that could be done. Backhouse and Stanhope, despite all their faults were competent in their fields, that he had to admit. While Churchill had given in to his dark musings the Admiral had stood up, quickly consulted some notes before he started to speak after the customary greetings. “I am currently here to brief you all on the state, deployment and future of the Royal Navy.” he then gestured towards the huge global map. “As you can see the Royal Navy is dispersed into two main Fleets, the Home Fleet and the Mediterranean Fleet and has various smaller stations all throughout the Empire. Of this the Home Fleet is of course the most powerful and important force. The Battleforce is comprised of His Majesties Ships Nelson, Rodney, Royal Oak, Royal Souvereign, Ramillies, Hood, Renown and Repulse. The Battleships and Cruisers are escorted by an assortment of Heavy and Light Cruisers along with several Destroyer Flotillas and two Hermes-Class Light Aircraft Carriers for areal reconnaissance. The Mediterranean Fleet is comprised of HMS Warspite, HMS Barham and HMS Malaya, again escorted by Cruisers, Destroyers and in this case our three Glourious Class Aircraft Carriers. The Fleets are commanded by myself and Admiral Dreyer respectively.” Churchill could not resist taking a pot shot at the pompous Grand Admiral. “So you are telling us that all our Fleet Carriers are in the Mediterranean Sea?” Before Backhouse could open his mouth to speak again Churchill fired yet another one. “And speaking of Carriers, it seems that you might have accidentally forgotten to mention Force A under Cunningham.” The First Sea Lord visibly started to 'boil' at this, but he couldn't tell off the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, in the presence of the King no less. Both men knew what the other thought about Cunningham, his Carries and most importantly the funding allocated for them, but unlike the PM Backhouse couldn't freely speak his mind, so he decided on a 'diplomatic solution. “Well, Prime Minister, the whole concept of Carrier Aviation is still highly experimental. I also believe it is highly unlikely that an Aircraft could find, let alone hit and damage a Battleship at sea, despite what the Nips and the Rednecks say. And as long as they can't do that,” 'and they will never be able to do that' he thought, “I will continue to push for more and better Battleships.” Backhouse fully realized that he was the only member of the Gun School in the room, and was slightly unnerved by this, but he knew he was right. “Speaking of which, I would like to come to future builds now. The RN build policy is currently two-fold. Harland and Wolf has been awarded the contract for constructing four new Battleships of the King George V-Class and to construct an additional Southampton-Class Light Cruiser fitted with a RDF suite and additional AA firepower. The other major project are the four Illustrious-Class Carriers. They, along with the single Southampton will join Force A as soon as they are commissioned.”

“How many more Carriers would we need to get Force A up to full strength?” the Foreign Secretary asked. “Another eleven, Sir. May I remind you all, Gentlemen, that with these resources we could build several additional King George V-Class ships?” The King intervened. “That is all very true, Admiral, but bear in mind that the shift towards Carriers instead of additional Battleships has been made and is established policy, not to be turned back? We believe, and the Government agrees with us that this decision was and is sound and will prove its worth in the future.” he said, using the Royal Plural. Churchill and Eden shared a meaningful look, both thinking the same. Backhouse had just been told off by the one person he couldn't bicker against even in the back rooms of the Admiralty or the confines of his Flagship. And now it would be difficult to publicly denounce this policy as the King had made it unmistakably clear that the Crown was fully supporting to formation of Force A and Admiral Cunningham in particular. “Yes, your Majesty.” Backhouse inwardly raged, but if he wanted to keep his job another hour he needed to play it safe. He therefore chose to continue his briefing as if nothing had happened. “Admiral Cunningham was to brief you all on Carrier tactics, but he is currently touring the Empire to increase RN recruiting in the Dominions, so this part will have to be done at some point in the future. Suffice it to say, if it works,” the 'which I doubt' was not said but could still be heard by everyone, “then the RN will indeed have a most potent Carrier Force, second to none on the globe.” Backhouse still believed that the Lion-Class should not have been cancelled, but yet again the orders had come from the Prime Ministers office, so there was not much that could be done. He also realized that even the smallest misfortune, the most minuscule setback would mean the end of his career. That much was certain, he had made too many enemies in this very room to allow for anything else. On the other hand if he managed to defeat the Kriegsmarine with the Battleships of Home Fleet then they would surely change their minds and the young upstarts like Cunningham and their lot would be put in their place. The Battleship was the Queen of the Sea and always would be.

The new Queen of the Seas?

“As previously said, Admiral Cunningham is not available today, and I could brief you at length about Battle tactics of the Surface Fleet, but there essentially nothing has changed since the Great War, and I know that all of you are up to par on the Battle of Jütland.” Backhouse delivered the rest of the Briefing in relative peace, but Winston was more convinced then ever that it would take a more than serious setback to either get rid of the dear Admiral or for him to see reason.

[Game effects: I will build the historical KGVs and then shift on Carriers. The Vanguards may be built as replacements when the KGVs are decommissioned in the 60s, provided I win the war and am in a favourable industrial and financial position.

Technical Notes: The TTL Illustrious-Class is about on par with a OTL Yorktown. Due to the different Flight Deck mentioned in a previous update carries an Air Group about the same size as the Yorktowns. As British Carriers still have smaller dimensions the FAA is pushing for foldable wings e.t.c. To cancel out this negative effect. So in terms of striking power and so on the Lusty and her sisters will be able to stand up to a similar size US or Japanese Carrier Group. This means of course that the Stringbags, the Swordfishes of Taranto fame will be phased out before the war begins. The RN will still have a problem with fitting so many planes in a smaller hangar, so they will take a bit longer than the Americans to get their complete CAG Airborne. Future Carrier designs will of course remedy this. Also Force A will only receive four Illustrious Carriers, the rest will be of an Essex-Class sized Implacable Class. Still, fate has great things in store for HMS Illustrious.]

Enewald Indeed.

BritishImperial It should, because the pattern I'm building Force A after has been tried and tested countless times.

I always like the Battleship as the "Queen of the Sea" rather than the Aircraft carrier. Now it is just so much cooler to see those massive guns turn broadside a let rip an earth shattering volley at the opposing ships at 15 miles or closer, rather than from 300 miles away have planes from carriers drop bombs and torpedos: so boring.

But in the game... BB's against CV's, well if the distance isn't closed quickly all hell will brake loose. It is always a pain to fight the USN and RN when they have nothing but a million CV's.

I completely agree with you on Battleships, but I chose to go with Carriers for RP and realism reasons.

You can build a stack of BBs that kills every carrier fleet that it encounters, the BBs only have to be properly escorted. My standard BB stack is:

11 BBs, four CVLs ( for air defence and to close the range to the enemy CVs, they are the most important escort component ) and the 15 remaining Grand Admiral slots are filled with CLs and DDs. Now this would never work in RL, and as much fun as these stacks are in the game I want to creat a semi-realistic world, so Carriers it were.

It can get worse if you're a survivor watching the last wave of carrier bombers fly off and then on the horizon you see they have a million Battleships as well.... ;)

Well, mixed stacks are stupid to be honest. Dunno exactly why, but whenever I did that in my early days they barely sunk anything.

So the Carriers are coming, something of a shame as others have said, you cannot beat the shear fury and hellfire of a full battleships broadside.

But I agree with TK, if your going for realistic then carriers have to be the way forward. You can write up a BB/CVL fleet sneaking up on carriers if they get a great deal of luck and the enemy makes some big mistakes, but for it to happen every time would soon get unrealistic and/or ridiculous.

Mixed stacks don't work well in the game: CV's won't sink many ships especially those pesky task forces of DD's and TP's. Now I love Submarines in my games (in my current AAR and game: I will have massive SS fleets)

I tend too stay away from the stacks in terms of attack: I will have my main fleets with CV's and BB's but when I plan too attack enemy fleets I will attempt to do so with my BB's and SS's groups. In a former SU game I had several SS groups with amazing kills: One SS group sank around 30 ships: @15 TPs, 3 BB's, 2 CV's and the rest CL's and DD's. The only problem with SS stacks are if you run into big fleets of escorts ships like DD's and CL's which send my subs to the bottom of the ocean.

But back on the terms of BB's it just looks so much better too see those beautiful ships roaming the seas. If I saw a carrier and a battleship while on a small ship I would be scared shitless when those massive guns turned my way. *Jumps into the water*
