After trying it out, I confirm : England LOSING the HYW is quite beneficial

I have problems playing England games as I have trouble defending all of my coasts.

While I had most of my fleet in the channel the AI landed about 30k troops in Scotland, its so tricky :X

Just wait until Paradox makes ships cost manpower. :p

Haven't yet tried Britain in Eu4, but in Eu2 + Eu3 you could either remain insular or go continental, didn't matter because you were strong enough whatever the choice to play around the world as much as you wanted.

Keeping your provinces in France and taking a few additional provinces(say Paris) helps your manpower a lot. Keeping an eye on everything is timeconsuming though.

If you start the war you have to prepare well before you declare it, placing the fleet at strategic points to prevent enemy ships come out from the ports.

However enemy troops on English soil are easily beatable because they can not receive reinforcements.

This thread has almost single-handedly made me want to get into EU4 again and buy the expansion. I really wanna try playing as England and spend ridiculously low amounts of money on army maintenance.

But what do you do for the rest of the game after the HYW? Just go colonize and dick around with the rest of the world? Doesn't sound very fun if you ask me.

It's one of my favorite plays, actually. If you've never done it, I recommend you give it a try.

While getting majority of the commerce in the Channel is important, I would say that using large frigates squadrons to defend trade lead to better results. I easily get above 50% ''just'' by using 125 frigates to defend the node (the Holy Roman Empire is not exactly trade friendly)

Building 125 frigates and maintaining them (obviously, so many frigates are just requited in very late game) appears to me as much ''cheaper'' on the long run than taking Antwerp and actually defend it on the land.

It's now 1810 in my game, and the British Empire (and colonies) field four hundred ships of the line and well over three thousand frigates. What could be nammed ''Commowealth navies'' outnumber three to one the current (just before the next war declaration) French/Holy Roman/Portugal/Spanish/Scandinavian navies combined, without seriously taxing my income. (The beauty of frigates is that they can both add to income and ravage ennemy fleets)

It is to me.

Ok... let´s do this by parts. I´ll leave fun out of the equation, as it´s totally subjective.

1- Getting out of the continent is a DEFEAT. Period. The norman lands were part of the english kingdom for centuries. You get out, you were defeated. I for one don´t play the game to be defeated like my historical counterpart was. You don´t play Hungary to be split my ottomans and Austria - why lose as England, either?

2- The game is dumb regarding the consequences of losing. If you white peace (or even win) you still will (much to my dismay) get those stupid gigantic lollard revolts, while if you lose it´s still way too easy to not see the War of the Roses. That removes much of the incentive of winning and I hope Paradox get a clue.

3- France is the only real rival you will have and thus it makes sense you beat them right from day one. The lands are also rich and will make ALL your other objectives easier. It also makes claiming thrones and other shenanigans that much easier. In other words, it opens many paths to play. While going to the isles means essentially just one.

I like my Canadian friend likes to play England, its even more of a "challenge" when you start a game and see France, Burgundy, Austria, Castile and Aragon/and or Denmark all rivaled to you.

As for Beaga who says getting out of the continent is a Defeat, I agree on principle, but a smarter man does not flog a dead horse. The English, and Brits by extension leaving the continent is an valid stratagem to either deal with the lollards and the WoR and come back stronger.

The English game is very much one about sitting behind a wooden wall and trolling the rest of Europe.
Frankly i see winning the HYW as winning the game before you even get past the first state, make a tactical withdrawal and extend your game time by a large margin :p.

I asked myself. Is it doable in 1.8.1 to have 100% WS against france, but not sign the peace deal. Then start a War agains burgundy, wait for their king to die and then taking the PU over france with their new provinces?

if you own the channel you have 100% -> twice trade income. It is worth it

I think everyone undestands it is a defeat, but as in this game the only DEFEAT is having your last province conquered, and this was not the case. His point was that losing this war was in fact beneficial in the long term.

Not if you need to defend it because of those global Austrian/Spanish/Portugal/Danish/Imperial/Turk combinations. I play extensively England, and because of relentlessly agressive colonization policies, I tend to get swamped on land.

If you have France and fight Spain/Portugal (which will happens all the time) in early game, you are caught between a rock and a hard place. Sure, it's possible to defeat them on land. It's even easy. But even clean cut victories on land can be crippling for the UK, because of MP issues.

Zero provinces on the Mainland means that the perfidious Albion can defy armies over a million soldiers with 20k stacks.

Of course, if player had access to stronger fortress a bit strong early in the game, it would be worthwhile to keep France . But by the time of the great colonial wars in America (say, 1500-1600) the fortifications available are not enough to slow down the ennemy.
