After the End Dev Diary #38 (Part Two!) - Cree Genghis, Northern Flavor, and The California Rework
(Note: Once again, I am not the author of this dev diary. This dev diary was written by al-Sayyid, a team member and creator of the Islam submod. I am posting this to the Paradox Forums on his behalf.)

Good tidings, all. I'll be filling in for 9Kbits today, so let's get straight to it.

I'd like to begin by prefacing that all screenshots are using vanilla portraits, so please forgive random Native women in Hijab.

Continuing on from yesterday, we have an announcement in regards to the name of the added Orthodox religion. As pictured here, you can see that we've given it a local name in Tlingit - this drives home the point of it being a syncretic holdout.

Moving on - we've taken some suggestions to heart, and as part of 0.6, some exciting decisions will be coming. Based on the real-life Iron Confederacy of historical western Canada, nomadic Peyotist leaders of the region will be able to declare a new empire- the Iron Confederacy. This title, if taken by an AI, will grant them tens of thousands of men, similar to the Genghis Khan event from Vanilla. It's also formable by a player, and comes with some nice bonuses. The title carries some heavy requirements, and will serve as an interesting way of shaking up the northern scene while giving flavor and a goal for any Peyotist ruler.

In regards to new cultures, here is some info:

We have two new melting pot cultures:
  • Rouillard - Melting pot that forms if Gallomericans control the southern Great Lakes region (Rostmann/Motowner lands).
  • Omedulac - Melting pot that forms if Gallomericans control the northern Great Lakes region (Dellsman, Yooper, Northlander).
Both of these new cultures are in the Gallomerican group and are designed to benefit players who take control of the area(s) in an Ursuline crusade.

Other new cultures:
  • The Subarctic group has one new culture: Iyyu. This culture represents East Cree from the James and Hudson Bay regions.
  • "Oji-Cree" culture has been renamed to Saulteaux and given expanded territory. Rulers can form the Iron Confederacy, if all of the other requirements are met. Still in the Anishinaabe group.
  • A new culture group has been created called "Athabaskan", which contains the existing Shuswap and Dakelh cultures in Cascadia as well as a new culture, Dene. Dene culture represents Athabascan-speakers from the far north. We on the dev team are aware that there are several different indigenous cultures inhabiting the area, but we felt as if having one larger culture would serve the region better rather than dividing the already-harsh northern reaches of the map between five or six different cultures.
  • The Northwest Coast group has two new cultures: Tsimshianic and Tlingit. Tsimshianic represents all of the Tsimshianic speakers from the Northwest Coast exterior and interior - we condensed them into one culture for similar reasons as Dene. Tlingit culture represents both exterior and interior Tlingit from the Alaskan panhandle and Canadian mainland.
  • The North Pacific group has two new cultures: Alaskan and Yukoner. Both of these cultures represent the remaining Anglo populations of the far northwest, with Alaskans inhabiting the coast and Yukoners inhabiting the interior.
  • Oh, and Paiute culture was moved to Plateau from Southwestern
In terms of retinues: none of these cultures have unique retinues at the moment, although we are open to adding them if we hear good suggestions.

That's not all folks - this wall of text ain't done yet - and I am pleased to announce what is my personal favorite addition coming in 0.6 - the California Imperial Rework.

We've been building up to this rework for a long time - part of 0.5 included the initial groundwork, including "New California". As it stands now, the Empire is meaningless - if you play as one of the Cetic warlord-kings, interacting with the imperial court will, at best, give you a claim on a single county. Playing as emperor is also extremely arbitrary - you have constraints put on you that you cannot directly lift unless you somehow manage to reconquer California - which a puppet emperor would not be able to do in the first place. As it stood, you have no reason to remain loyal to the empire or even roleplay with the Empire in mind.

No longer. I now present to you the Governatus. The Governatus is California's most important person under the Emperor - in the allegory of China, they are the Imperial Chancellor of the realm. The Governatus is the Puppetmaster to the Puppet emperor in an incompetent reign - giving you, the player, a face by which you can control (or strengthen!) the empire. The Governatus and their power is directly inverse with the Emperor's authority - which is now determined by a modifier. This system makes much more sense, and allows you, the player, to directly strengthen (or weaken) the Emperor's position in his own court. To this affect, there are new tiers to the Emperor traits - previously, we only had "Figurehead Emperor", which has been reworked to fit this system. It is pictured here. Now, weaker and stronger emperors are also recognized. A particularly skilled Emperor will find themselves with the Strong Emperor trait - pictured here. Likewise, an Emperor who has fallen far past the point of puppetry will find themselves punished with the Weak Emperor trait - pictured here. The imperial authority modifiers give you tangible means of improving the realm (or your own power), while being realistic - the Emperor must keep in mind his Prime Mandate, else the throne of the Totally Righteous may fall to another dynasty.

The Governatus has toys to play with as well - they will have access to several unique CB's to restore imperial authority, as well as events to strengthen or weaken the Imperial Authority. Thus, if you want to roleplay as a loyal minister of the Emperor, you are free to do that, and if you want to live out your dreams of emulating Cao Cao, then you are also free to do that. Be careful, however - the Governatus may not be secure in his position if the Realm Authority is also not secure. The Governatus, under weak authority, appoints their heir directly - under strong authority, the decision becomes that of the Emperor.

As part of the changes coming to California, we are going around fleshing out aspects of the lore - we have shown off some spoilers in past developer diaries hinting at this, and more will be shown later. Here are some of the new characters added to title histories:

Grand Francisco
The Valley

Lastly, in light of these new mechanics, and also as part of some of the feedback we received, Zakariyya's event chain will continue...

I would like to conclude this developer diary by announcing that I will begin writing one off's elaborating on the new California lore - because it is a lot! With that, thank you for reading! As always, we are happy to answer any questions or comments.

The Iron Confederacy is a great addition, but I love this Governatus and how the Californian Emperor's power now works. Such an improvement.

Even though it weakens the revelationists, I quite like the idea of the trailwalkers, as revelationism in that area never seemed to quite fit in my mind for whatever reason. In general, I'd rather existing religions were fleshed out though. i suppose in the end, it boils down to things which you guys find interesting. I'll probably play with a pelagic ruler in my next game. :)

I haven't worked on my Yakama mod since I last posted, nor have I even played CKII, so I'll just post the files here in case anyone else wants to play with them. I don't know how to create sub-mods, so when I played I just replaced the default files with these ones.

After I formed America as the Rothschilds, the Grand Rebbe has stopped calling Great Holy Wars, despite there being several viable targets. Is this a consequence of being in America, or is it something to do with how the AI calls GHWs in general?

isn't that a problem in the normal game as well? i mean most of the time, if you are a pagan who controle most of a catholic région, the pape doesn't seem to notice you. i mean i was a romuvan warrior who controled russia and britania but the pope was more focus on the arabic kingdom.

I'm talking about my own religion. In my last playthrough, the Grand Rebbe was a lunatic that kept setting GHW targets further and further away (the last one before I stopped was SoCal when I had no counties west of the Mississippi).

After the End Fan Fork - Lore Dev Diary #1 - The Green Sash Uprising

(NOTE: This is dev diary is, once again, not written by me. It was instead written by al-Sayyid, as he was the one who formulated much of this new lore.)

"Greetings, everyone! This will be the first of a series of Lore Dev Diaries - we will start putting these out to fill gaps between developer diaries as we release updates. If you're not already on the discord, please join here: Community Discord Server Link Polls for what each Lore Dev Diary will be on are carried out there, and we are happy to welcome you!

Now, let us get started. This lore post will contain information about the Green Sash Uprising - that which tore the Celestial Empire asunder and sent commoner and emperor alike into fright. As always, you are free to ask questions. I will respond to what I am allowed to answer, and this will have accompanying maps and screenshots for your viewing pleasure!

As the ancient wisdom of Guru Guan holds for all things in the world, that which is long united must divide; long divided, must unite. Thus it has ever been.

In the twentieth year of the Brave and Sixth Filial Emperor, Hetch Yudkow the First, the Imperial Court ordered the grand coalition to pacify the northern Cascades. The heretic-Queen Ellen had defiantly refused Imperial commands, and she posed a direct threat to Imperial authority in the Northern Protectorate. This would be the climax of the Northern campaigns - the general Kirk Gable had been stationed awaiting imperial orders, and the Emperor personally took command of the campaign, leading the vanguard forward to the frontlines.

Map of the Empire at this time.

The Emperor Hetch the Brave

The campaign ended in disaster. Our Brave and Filial Emperor, while in the midst of a great battle, was struck by one of the tree-dwellers weapons - his leg caved in and his ability to fight on the front forever destroyed, the Emperor ordered the frontlines guarded and retreated to the eastern capital. The wound had come as a great shock to the great Emperor - for days he insisted it was a minor wound and would soon heal, but as time went on his attempts at walking grew more pained and his moods often turned darker and darker, until he found solace in gifts of Valleyan wines. After his impairment, he grew more interested in drink and idle fancy rather than governance, relegating many of his traditional tasks and responsibilities to courtiers and his Governatus. Thus began the many excesses of the Bureaucracy.

The Governatus, Jeff Madonna, had envisioned this as a chance to cement his authority, and he ordered his most loyal into positions of governance over the various prefectures of our Celestial Empire. In the following scores of years, courtiers abused their power, as the local despots levied exorbitant taxes, seized property, pillaged coffers, and violated the common folk. The Northern Protectorate was left isolated, as attacks from the followers of the Tree increased tenfold. The Governatus ruled that the Protectorate was less important than the empire itself, and eventually, Kirk Gable and his men abandoned their stations, fleeing southward to guard the northernmost border of the empire. Thus, the imperial roads in the north were abandoned, and Gaian pilgrimages to the Redwoods increased in intensity and in fervor, as many Druids began claiming of revelations from the Earth.

One of these visionaries, who called himself "The General of Gaia", claimed that the Brave and Sixth Filial Emperor would perish soon, from a fall caused by his wound. None believed him, and all were in shock when, in the thirty-seventh year of his reign, the Sixth Filial Emperor fell down the entrance to the Imperial Hall - a fall no doubt caused by his wound. Overnight, political squabble overtook the imperial court, as factions fought to push their favored prince to inherit. The Bear Throne sat empty for a week, as the struggle grew more intense. Finally, the Prefect of the Motherlode, Will Steely, crushed his opponents, including the former Governatus. With his rule secure, the new Governatus placed forth the prince Chad, the Steward of the Northern Palace and Emperor Hetch's fourth son, on the throne. Emperor Chad, now known to many as "the Boneless", ruled from behind a screen, as he delegated tasks to the Governatus and his ensemble while he immersed himself in indulgent amorous activities with his youthful consort, Empress Amanda.

The Emperor Chad

As the realm slid further into chaos, disasters struck - the raids from the north increased, the ground shook asunder, and crops failed for five years on end. The citizenry struggled on the verge of starvation and death as the bellies of the officials grew wider. As the ability of the court decreased, the duties of the prefects and officials increased. One official in particular, James Gearhart, had been zealously promoting a tithe on the Gaian processions, which he felt had now overwhelmed the Redwoods. Many of those who conducted the pilgrimages refused to pay the tithe - dissidence turned into anger when pilgrims were seized at random by James' order, and the area grew unstable with contempt for the court. In the fourteenth year of Emperor Chad, James Gearhart, angered at the lack of tithes, decided to force the pilgrims to pay, and punish those who refused. Sources are unclear on what followed exactly afterward - but by the end of the day, thousands of pilgrims lay dead among the burning remains of the Great Redwood trees. The very symbol of the Celestial Empire was laid ablaze, and the empire itself was responsible.

The General of Gaia, who had made himself untraceable since his prophecy regarding the Brave Emperor, appeared once more, urging the common masses of the North to rise in revolt. With the cry of the Redwoods, dissidents began turning to rebels, shouting out that "Old is the heaven and necessary are the changes". The General bided his time, growing his following from a few social outcasts to many thousands within a year. Finally, he announced to all his followers - "In the Fifteenth Year, all is auspicious".

Thus it was, that, at the beginning of the fifteenth year of the Emperor, 2611 AD (American Dating), large droves of people, who had long been abused and extorted, began to rise up in rebellion. Thousands upon thousands of the starved and disaffected began to take arms against the court, waving their green sashes high. The uprising seized and razed the offices and homes of local authorities, killed Imperial officials and captured city after city. The revolt spread like wildfire, and within five days the entirety of the Northern prefectures had fallen, as the court was shocked to the point of inaction. An emergency meeting of the court was declared, as the various armies of the empire were too scattered about to effectively respond. With urging of the Governatus Steely, the Emperor lifted one of the laws that the Emperor Lawgiver had laid down - that no prefect or governor may raise their own army. He ordered the prefects and governors of the realm to recruit from their citizenry and fight the rebellion, as more joined the cause of the rebels.

The Initial Uprising

One of these new rebels, Yuk Kuan-Yin, had been a nobleman - he became increasingly convinced of zeal for his faith, and rose up with the followers of the Sacred Heart in Baja to overwhelm the province. Within six months, most of the empire had been conquered - but the rebels had a major weakness, as they no longer shared a common ideology or goal. Rebellion infighting became common, and the divided rebels were easily put to the sword by the might of the Empire. In an epic showdown outside of Reno, Kirk Gable slew The General of Gaia, who promised his followers before his death that he shall return as a champion of the Earth-Goddess. Yuk Kuan-Yin was slain by the Prefect Caballero, and the few remaining rebels ran to the hills.

Yuk Kuan-Yin

The Height of the Uprising

With the rebellion crushed, the Empire should have experienced prosperity, but problems immediately arose. During the rebellion, Prefectures were permanently lost to barbarian forces - as the Eastern Protectorate was abandoned, Yimby soldiers took over the Grand City of Vegas, and in the north, the Paiute lord Tagotoka claimed his own revelation. What's more, the victorious Prefects began turning on one another. In these battles, the Governatus was slain - but his daughter, Ann Steely, quickly consolidated the rest of the Valley and had the Emperor proclaim her as Governatus of the realm. Many loyal officials were slain - I myself write this in exile, as a former official of the Governor Yassir Abbas of Socal. With Imperial Authority at its lowest, and the world tearing itself asunder in these times of chaos and ambition, will a hero rise? Is our Empire truly doomed? Have Moloch's machinations finally brought about the end of the Prime Mandate?

The Initial Warlord Position

Tavibo the Mad

The Current Status of California, now fully consumed by the ambition of the Warlords.

I know not. I do know that my life is in danger, and the Empire I have served for sixty-five years is on the verge of collapse.

-Signed, in the first year of Emperor Elton the Fourth, may he reign for ten thousand years, Frederick Reisman, Scholar of the Imperial Court."

I know not. I do know that my life is in danger, and the Empire I have served for sixty-five years is on the verge of collapse.

-Signed, in the first year of Emperor Elton the Fourth, may he reign for ten thousand years, Frederick Reisman, Scholar of the Imperial Court."
These cool writings definitely should find their way into the mod! Maybe as a standalone .txt file?

What about King Esteban del Caballero of Baja? Is he loyal to Emperor Hetch Yudkow?(which doesn't reveal in current version AtEFF)

In current version AtEFF, Ann Steely(and other Californian kings except king of Baja) becomes queen at 2622. Does the rebellion go on about 11 years?

What about first three children of Emperor Hetch? I notice that they doesn't appear in the picture.

I don't mean to be a pest, but is the next version set to release sometime soon? I'm excited to conquer the west coast as Alaska. :D
This next version will probably have a longer development cycle than v0.5 did, both because of its much larger scope and because of various IRL obligations. However, I am aiming for a release date before the new year.
