So I checked the disease doc I made and it is working just peachy, if you guys want your free to put it in. :)
I've added your version of the disease file to Github. I did a quick test, and sure enough a wave of tuberculosis swept across California and killed the elderly emperor.

I did make a couple minor changes though. For example, smallpox is still listed in the file but I gave it a time period of 1509-1979: the year it was introduced to Hispaniola by Spanish explorers, and the year it was eradicated in the USA. This means it should never naturally occur.

yeah, various diseases, even nasty ones like superbugs and influenzas should be a pretty common occurrence (much more common than vanilla), and depending on the culture/religion/maybe an old world tech trait there could be ways to try and cure them.
Small-Pox needs deleted.
The last case of Small-Pox in the americas was 1971. This is before the absolute minimum date that the end happened, which is at least the activation of Unit-1 in Three-Miles Island.

Which was in 1974.

And yes, we can know for certain that the end happened after 1974 because of the fact that Three Mile Island is Atomicist. This clearly means the reactor has been built and turned on. Meaning that Small-pox is gone in the Americas.

In fact, it also means that we might even be able to push the event to being after 1979, when the accident happened.

I know you dont want there to be a general point when we can tell when the event happened, Ofaloaf, but because you have Three-Mile Island, we can completely rule out everything before it was first activated purely due to it being Atomicist.

Plenty diseases that don't currently happen, don't have because we invest alot into them not happening.

But really, with the time difference, what about new diseases? Presumably most people who could die from current diseases would have, and there'd be immunity, as new diseases or new brands of old diseases, or just new names for old diseases, would have come along since.
You don't have to take modern bad diseases as the bad diseases, any could do. the plagues of athousand years ago are common, minor aliments now that infect many but kill very few. And some of the minor diseases then have grown up into serious killers today, and then there's all the new ones out from the blue.
Diseases are one place you could really let go and have fun with the making up with.

oh that's right. though there are plenty of old diseases that could survive into the 27th century. for example, HIV/AIDS is definately one of those diseases that's NEVER going away, plus it works well within CK2 limits since (according to its wiki): "Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype.[7] After the diagnosis of AIDS, if treatment is not available, survival ranges between 6 and 19 months"

so HIV would have a modest health decrease and if possible, higher chance of increased illness while AIDS tanks your health and practically guarantees a characters' death within a year or so. plus since it's relatively easy to contract (beware ye seducers!) and can potentially be passed from mother to child. it works perfect a"s the disease you avoid like... well... the plague and try to give to your least loved (potential successor) nephew". biological fratricide at its finest, AKA Crusader Kings 2 on a tuesday:rofl:

then of course, there the less terminal old diseases like the various poxes, whooping cough (dangerous for babies), various influenzas, hepatitis, various food-borne viruses, etc etc you get the point.

as for new diseases... what Orinsul said. go nuts! go ahead... make my day. something i'd like to see is when europeans come whether by one of the events like in the carribean, or by invasion, a nasty diseas pops up. (obviously an analogue for the wildfire spread of smallpox from 16th-19th centuries)

EDIT: does anyone know of a website that really hypothesizes about all of this?

Could you really add HIV/AIDS to the mod though? I mean, it really just destroys your immune system, doesn't it? With the tech level that the world is at, they wouldn't really have any way of determining that someone has HIV/AIDS, would they? So does it make sense to make a trait for a disease nobody would be aware someone's suffering from?

Hey all. I'm running into technical difficulties with the mod, and was wondering if this was something people had run into before. When It attempt to load the mod, it'll load to the title screen, but the map itself is empty. I *think* what's going on is that its failing to load character information: if that's the case, I'm not sure how to fix it. I've included a screenshot, if that helps.

that's what trait descrptions are for. just because you don't know what you have doesn't mean you don't have it, plus there are outward signs once you have it, most obvious being lesions. also, cancer has existed throughout human history and was almost impossible to diagnose for the majority of it.

HIV by itself wrecks your immune system (provided your not one of lucky the 1 in 300 to have a well built immune system) and makes you much more suceptable to other viruses and diseases (in CK2 terms, a mild health malus which other health maluses stack upon), AIDS (a severe health penalty) wrecks it, has its own extra effects which pop up sporadically (mild health penalty), and kills you; either by the sheer combined health stat decrease, or by another diseas you catch once your immune system is all but nonexistant.

here's its wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS#Prognosis

EDIT: yay! my 2666th post!!! time to pillage everything as the bretheren again!!!

i don't know specifically what's wrong with your thing Deo, but i'd say delete it, download AtE again, and get eveything back into place. alternatively, delete the cache, since that can get buggy sometimes.

No additional diseases really stand out to me as being worth adding. HIV/AIDS in particular seems like it wouldn't fit the setting very well, and some people might consider it a bit tasteless to add it.

The main option I've thought about is influenza, though for now you could assume it to be included in the generic "ill" trait. Perhaps some deadly strain of influenza could show up at a later date, or maybe some long-preserved spores are uncovered in the ruins of an ancient bioweapon lab (smallpox, anthrax, etc.)

Could the homosexual trait not have any drawbacks for all Californian cultures, as well as any future Oregon or Washington cultures? Perhaps homosexual characters could even adopt a child through a special event or decision, and maybe said child can have an "adopted" trait that's similar to the vanilla bastard trait.

No additional diseases really stand out to me as being worth adding. HIV/AIDS in particular seems like it wouldn't fit the setting very well, and some people might consider it a bit tasteless to add it.

why wouldn't it fit the setting? if there's any disease or virus that could survive the apocalypse alongside humanity, it'd be AIDS. and why would it be tasteless? in a game where you can knock up your sister and murder children a realistic modeling of a pandemic disease isn't that crazy.

So looked through the text files and noticed there are no cultural tactics set for any of the new cultures in this mod. Was this something intended since the cultural tactics are pretty OP or just something overlooked?

Isn't HIV/AIDS too virulent to reasonably survive a population collapse? More deadly diseases require higher population densities (or an animal reservoir, which HIV/AIDS doesn't have) to remain endemic, or they run their course and burn out like the plagues in Europe did.

Just on that criterion, I would imagine that HIV/AIDS would be one of the least likely diseases to survive an apocalypse - particularly if said apocalypse means all of our fancy treatment methods and anti-retrovirals go out the window.

it survived well enough in the 60s-80s. plus if/when the apocalypse happens, its a safe bet that sex is going to be one of the things people don't stop doing.

Well sure. But that's not the issue. The issue is low population density, like quoms said. First, many people with AIDS will die in the apocalypse. Of those left, they'll be untreated, and likely die relatively quickly because that's what happens with untreated AIDS. With monogamy on the rise, as this mod assumes, most people won't spread the disease past their spouse. If they reproduce, their offspring could be infected, but that's an even higher likelihood of dying before infecting others. In communities where multiple partners are common and one or more members are infected, the entire community will soon contract it and die out. In effect, AIDS will kill its hosts more quickly than its hosts can spread it, and likely die out.

At least, that's the theory. To take a fact from the internet, "A small percentage of people infected with HIV do not experience the profound and sustained CD4+ T-cell depletion characteristic of HIV infection or develop AIDS-related illnesses for many years, even without treatment with antiretroviral drugs." So theoretically, these few asymptomatic carriers could spread the disease to other communities, but that runs the same issue. Either it will kill a nuclear family and fail to spread, or it will kill a community and fail to spread. Without our modern 'global society', a disease that is too virulent will simply flash burn, killing many people very quickly over a short period of time. It won't be able to become an epidemic, killing people over a great length that gives it time to spread.
