I think you fundamentally misunderstand how technology works. Human science is built on the shoulders of past discoveries, an aggregation of thousands of years of knowledge.

It's possible for things to be preserved- there are probably some blueprints here or there. But even that is not enough, without the theoretical background and the practical skill to construct what they need to construct.

Hell, look at this:

308686_Large.jpg

Do you know how this circuit diagram works? Did you even know this was a circuit diagram? Do you know what it's for? It's for a computer motherboard.

Now imagine your level of confusion, but now add that

1. you don't know what a circuit diagram is
2. you don't what a computer is
3. you don't know what electricity is

And you begin to realize the problems involved.
Also note that no computer has been solely designed by humans in the past thirty years or so. All of them have used computers to design at least part of them. So you can't even get modern computers without already having computers.

I haven't been playing this particular game very long, but has anyone else noticed the Celestial Emperor being suicidally overconfident? I'm the King of Gran Francisco (where did the "Gran" part of the name come from anyway?) and I married my sister off to a relative of the Emperor. Well I've had two successive Emperors declare war on me for my sister's claim despite the fact that I have far more troops than they do.
The Gran in Gran Francisco means Grand in Spanish, so it's pretty much just San Francisco (City of Francisco) and the surrounding coastline, making it the greater area.

With all this talk about re-discovering lost technology, one thing that would fit is the rediscovery of the gun.

Since your characters can find and repair guns for themselves, possibly there is a way that after you reach level 5 or 6 in light infantry and one of your characters has a gun that you get an event to reverse-engineer the weapon. Of course this wouldn't result in having an army equipped with assault rifles but rather the creation of arquebus musket type weapon that maybe could be given to characters as a trait for a small combat bonus or instead a small combat, moral and defense bonus for light infantry while making them slightly more expensive (gun and gunpowder manufacturing is costly).

"but why not cannons too?" Because due to limits in smelting technology in 14th-16th century, cannons had to be built as massive bombards that had to mostly be transported by river or sea and could not be taken far inland due to their mass. Also bombards had a ridiculous crew and supply train that had to follow them, they were also prone to suddenly exploding. It wasn't until the mid 16th century that cannons started getting small enough to haul everywhere, I believe. Bombards would not work with a landmass as big as the US due to the transport costs and time plus the technology required to make a good cannon just isn't there in this post-apocalyptic setting's timeframe.

I have another Idea: Western "Cowboy" cultures (Texan, Arixian, Mountaineer, Navajo, Sonoran, Valleyan, ect.) Should have the option to hold rodeos. Maybe have it replace the tournament decision. I know it wouldn't change much, but it would really add to the flavor.

Different cultures should be able to create different guns and the guns should be inheritable. The Texans would create horse musket units, Pirates would make flintlock pistols and east coast would make rifles.

In my opinion, I'd save this for an EU4 export. Rifles and other 19th/18th century guns don't really belong in a neo-medieval society.

Given the highly significant effect they have, the trait firearms are probably more modern weapons.

Really you could consider firearms to be `implemented` in the same way vanilla `implements` them - as a simple part of military tech advancement. Your Siege is above 6? You've got cannons, behold. Your infantry techs are both 8? Say hello to the HCC's Arquebusiers.

actually the first muskets came about in small numbers in the late 15th century, so a little bit after AtEs' time.

technically the most advanced weapon per se should be this: the repeating crossbow

My idea for the arquebus being available is because there is a chance for a character to salvage and repair a gun. If they are capable of this then they should (by tech 5-6 at least) be able to use what technology they have to analyze, rediscover gunpowder, take inspiration from the found ancient gun tech and eventually mimic early matchlock gunpowder weapons with what they have so they can better equip their armies.

That or maybe in this future, the arquebus proves too expensive to make on a large scale. So a character having an arquebus is not only a usable weapon (not as great as a salvaged gun though) but a prestige boost as a sign of status because they had the wealth to hire a team of smiths and experts to recreate what is considered a once lost technology.

The chance to inherit varies quite a bit. For an adult, the base chance is 70%. If your skill in whatever the tech boosts is high (high martial for a gun, high learning for old textbooks/encyclopedias, etc), that chance is boosted to 85%. If you have a high intrigue, your chance to inherit any and all tech items is 95%. In my current playthrough as the empire of Canada, I've had a typewriter and a gun in possession of every one of the emperors due to all of them having a high martial and/or intrigue skill.

Something else I thought of in regards to giving the Russian invaders their own religion is to make their religion a heresy of Americanism. I know it sounds weird, but hear me out; it seems basically decided that they're going to be made communists, which, as we all know, isn't something well liked by your stereotypical patriotic american. Since the AtE timeline and our own split shortly after world war 2, it would make sense for Communism to be corrupted into a religion of evil by Americanist Mythology, thus treating Communism like many people treat Satanism. Making communism an Americanist heresy would not only make any self respecting Americanist automatically hate the Russian invaders as they do the British invaders, but also make it possible for Communism to spring up at random on the map. This of course assumes that the Russians aren't going to stay Atomicist (which they are, so forget the second paragraph of this post), and that the devs don't have any other plans for them yet.

Actually, Communism isn't going to be put in. The devs have (repeatedly) stated that the Russians will remain atomicist.

Also, A quick question. I beat back the Japanese on their first attack on California. Will they ever make more attacks, or does the event only happen once? Considering that they're a sort of merchant/colonists (and kind of an analogue to the Europeans setting up in the New World and Africa) I feel like it would be better if they made multiple attempts at several different sites.
