I was playing a Netherlands game that I started with the "80 Years War" scenario. I managed a peace with Spain and the game proceeded. However, late in the 17th century, my colony of New Netherlands was attacked by one of Spain's many colonies. I was pulled into the war and my allies, Sweden and England, abandoned me. Spain was a behemoth. It had been beating-up on France the entire game. Needless to say, I didn't stand a chance. Although my navy protected my coastline, my overmatched army retreated into neutral Austria just to save it itself from overwhelming Spanish forces. They overran all my colonies and took over half of the Netherlands including Holland. I begged for peace and Spain gave it to me: all it wanted was the removal of a core on a formerly held southern African province. That was it! I was stunned, but I very happily took it. Here I was expected to lose provinces, colonies, money, and forced to release half of the Netherlands, but AI just wanted a core on a rather worthless African province?!?!
