Awesome AAR so far man and brilliant planning with regards to France. I will be interested to see how you do against the Brits in Africa. Also your invasion of Greece should be fun :)

I may have to play an Italy game now.

8.5. The fishes are better start eating iron!

The Regia Marina begins pulling away troops from Tripoli. While busy in these operation, two lone destroyers are spotted and sunk.

Shortly after, Free France tries to block Italian troops as well.. without any success.

flot2.png

Tripoli is taken back, with a British gift on it.

Lyb7.png

And a useful trade is carried out with Germany.

trade2.png

On 20th of August another ESC brigade is ready. As no more planes needs brigades, ESC production is discontinued. More ICs are freed for other units. The same day, more Allied ships are sent to the deep of the Mediterranean.

Also, British troops who managed to take Mechili are routed.

flot3.png

A few days later the now famous British CTF is spotted by Briganti bombers.. Mecozzi tactical squadron is sent to help and the two Italian SAGs are sent to engage it. The battle presents more losses for the Italians, but British Penelope CL is badly damaged, and will be probably sunk in a pursuing bomber attack. Despite this good new, Italy starts lacking screen ships.

In the meanwhile, more minor flotilla are sunk.

flot4.png

Another nasty Allied landing on Tripoli.

Lyb8.png

But Italian plans are different this time. With British troops advancing in Lybia, it’s necessary to avoid an encirclement of Tobruk. Operazione Amo (Operation Fish-Hook) is designed. Italian troops in Tobruk will support a Beachhead attack on Bardia, followed (hopefully) by a quick swoop of Italian divisions on the two green lines. If that can be done fast, two pockets would form in Lybia.

operazioneamo.png

The usual British CTF shows up to be beaten. A few minor flotillas shows up to be sunk as well. Italy manages to sink two CLs, 1 DD and 1 TP.

flot5.png

General Vercellino leads the first attack of Operazione Amo. It is successful and the British commanders start fearing the Desert Fox!

amo2.png

On 7th September, Bardia is back on Italian hands. What will be the fate of the risky Italian operation? Will Italian generals Vercellino and Guzzoni manage to encircle and destroy the British division staying in the area before they can break the pockets?

This is incredibly inventive and optimistic of the Italian military, isnt it. Good for them. I think it just might work, but you know as they say, a plan never survives contact with the enemy, or something like that.

8.6. Operazione Amo develops.

Macchi begins working on Improved Interceptors. Germany offered us its schemes and some tons of coal in return for giving them Improved Artillery schemes.

ricerca20.png

Romania needs to give up quite some land..

romania.png

Our planes spots a fresh british SAG sailing inside the Med. To avoid the confrontation with a seriously damaged Italian one, Operazione Amo is changed a bit, with Italian troops unloading in Barca rather than in Derna.

Yet, the Royal Navy manages to engage the Italian SAG. The Regia Marina can retreat just before that RM Muzio Attendolo and RM Venezia are sunk. They won’t leave shipyards for a long time, though.

flot6.png

It’s time to make a balance of the Naval war between Italy and the Allies though. From June, when Italy entered the conflict, Italy lost 4 destroyers, 4 submarines, 2 transport flotillas, 1 light carrier, 1 light cruiser, 1 old Zara-class heavy cruiser and the Caio Duilio.

Italy managed to sunk: 8 transport flotillas, 13 destroyers, 1 submarine, 7 light cruisers, heavy cruisers York and Tourville, the Valiant, the Barham and the Queen Elizabeth.

Cavagnari smiled in delight on his chair, even if he knew Italian ships weren’t going to sail anymore for at least 6 months.

In the meanwhile a second Para division was ready. No more are ordered, and a long militia serial run is started. In the same days, another Motorized infantry division is completed and it is ready to be used in Operazione Amo.

Another Garrison division is ready as well. It is sent to Cholet and the Celere is redeployed back to Taranto.

With almost all needed troops redeployed in Lybia, the Attack for Sollum begins. The following morning, British defenders are beaten.

On 15th September, Caracciolo di Feroleto motorized division secure Sollum and begins pushing south, hoping to overrun the retreating Allied divisions. Unluckily, the British troops arrive there just a few hours before him.

In the meanwhile, General Vercellino leads an attack on Mechili, another key province to encircle the British in Forte Capuzzo.

After a reshuffling of divisions among Tobruk, Mechili and Bardia, an attack on Rabia is launched. The province falls soon, and if Forte Maddalena will fall as well, the encirclement on Forte Capuzzo would be completed.

British troops take Msus province, surprisingly. Are they hoping for an encirclement as well? To Vercellino it looks just like one more pocket to be created.

On 26th morning, Caracciolo di Feroleto reach Rabia. It is promptly attacked, but he tries to delay until the Secondo Motorizzato makes it to Rabia.
It would need to hold until the 20:00, but 3 hours before he is defeated.

Nevertheless, he disorganized the attackers just enough to allow Mj Caruso Secondo Motorizzato to hold Rabia.

The British, in the meanwhile, manage to prevent an easy pocket on Msus by taking Al Jaghbub
amo4.png

Without hesitating, the day following the arrival of the bulk of the Italian army, the attack on Forte Maddalena is launched. In 9 hours, British troops holding it are routed.

amo5.png

A couple days later the encirclement is completed!

enc.png

Italians manage to capture 4 well equipped divisions. However, the final part of Operazione Amo is still far from completed. Forte Maddalena occupants have been defeated, a pocket on Msus needs to be closed and the second “hook” of the fish-hook needs to be formed.

Nice to see that your troops attack and don't hide in their fortresses like the Italians did for the most part in RL. :p

Whoever gave you that idea has only a biased account of the Italian conduct of the war.

Operazione Amo seems to be goign as planned, hopefully Msus turns into an encirclement also.

Nice update. :)

8.7. What happens outside of Africa?

Allied troops are almost ready to engage il Vallo d’Etiopia.

ethiopia.png

Another Lagunari (MAR) division is ready for Italy..After 2 more Progetto Nettuno will be completed. On 6th October 1940 infrastructural expansion on Addis Ababa is completed. Our forts will eventually repair much quicker. A similar expansion is started in Adwa.

The same days, Fiat begins working on new repair facilities.

ricerca21.png

A bit too busy with Lybia, Italy loses Sardinia.

sard.png

In the meanwhile, the attempt to recreate a pocket continue.

fortmad.png

The following day, news of the completion of the last fortress on the Ethiopian Wall arrive. Now as soon as Breda will finish working on Improved Infantry, 2 serials will be launched.

The battle for taking back Sardinia begins shortly after. Short of units, cavalry divisions and paratroopers are used for this amphibious landing.

sard2.png

Germany foreign Minister came that day with an interesting proposal. The Tripartite pact is signed by Galeazzo Ciano. Italy would have her sphere of influence extending on Africa, Iberia, the Balkans and South America.

trip.png

And after a few days of battle, Sardinia is back on Italian hands.

sard3.png

Back to Lybia, situation doesn’t look that good.

8.8. Operazione Amo failure

Various battles rages as both sides try to turn to their favor the outcome of the war. Italy tries to attack the center of the British position in Italian Lybia. The British try to take advantage of the weak Italian position in Rabia, although Lt.General Lisi relief attack on Sidi Barrani could allow the Rabia defenders to hold the province while 2 more Infantry divisions reach it.

lyb2-1.png

The battles end with 3 victories for the Italian troops.

Mussolini ordered to weaken the Uk as much as possible.. Italian spies manage to eliminate in a fake car accident an important Administrative Genius of Britain.

assa.png

Breda finally manages to work on Improved infantry divisions… New production can begin! On the same day, the first militia unit is deployed in Rimini.

ricerca22.png

Italy resumes attacks at the end of October. Siwa is the first province to be taken for closing the second pocket in Lybia.

siwa.png

Italian airplanes give some beating to UK bombers.

airsup.png

General Vercellino and Lt. Roatta attack British forces in Msus. The intent is to stop them from routing our motorized divisions, but surprisingly enough the British division surrenders (lost as with encirclements).

msus.png

With Siwa in Italian hands, another pocket is finally sealed.

pocket.png

British Generals try to avoid another pocket east of Tobruk. With more and more reinforcements call in to the attack the Italians are forced to withdraw to Forte Capuzzo. It looks like local superiority for the Italians is over.

lyb3-1.png

Italian counterattack on Rabia is immediate, for two reasons: avoid being overrun from British panzers and avoid them stabilizing their position.

lyb4-1.png

A few days later, Italians are forced to leave Siwa in British hands.
It is now clear that Operazione Amo cannot proceed anymore.

lyb5-1.png

Italian Generals have 2 options:

Number one is to pull back all the troops to Tripoli, and try to encircle the ANZAC there (7 divisions, French included) before it is too late.
Number two is to pull out the troops through the sea and ship them on the rear of British lines.

Option number two, while very ambitious, needs to confront with a badly damaged Italian Navy. With some unconsciousness it could be attempted, nevertheless.

It's not, indeed. But plans for Greece are mantained.
The situation it's not desperate, unless I try to hold a line. With some strat redeploying here and there significant havoc could still be caused on the Allied troops.

And don't forget Italy destroyed 10 divisions from September to October.
