Is it even possible to do these? It seems like the British would overrun them each time, which of course shouldn't be the case.

That would get to confusing, Paradox will most likely use the most commong flag associated with that nation during the time frame.

Might not be a perfect soultion but I would have to agree having the flag change all the time would just be confusing. As to the afgan wars - the Brits were able to defeat them just not keep them under control. Not sure how that would be done.

.. you dont seem to realise how many times flags changed.
and it most certainly will have to be done for the US.

Modelling the Afghan wars are no problem: Give the provinces their historical revolt rate and the Brits their historical policies.

that's precisely why it shoudln't be implemented. Too much work and no practical gain for gameplay mechanism. US alone had several dozen changes of flag design...

for Afghanistan the revolt rate should be close to 100%. Let's see how the Brits can hold on to them.

I think there should be at least four "levels" of colonization from "settler colony" (Australia, Algeria etc) to directly administrated "crown colony" (Ceylon, Kenya, Gold Coast) to indirectly ruled "protectorate"(Zanzibar, Northern Nigeria, Indian States, Khiva, Bokhara) to completely self-governing "vassals" (Oman, Malay States, Nepal).
There was Irish revolution? I thought some nut jobs just took over a post office or something.Theres also the issue with the 1916 Irish revolution.. Ireland is so close to England the UK is almost assured victory..

Afghanistan could have been kept under control with a more hostile occupation like kill all Afghans on site or something... Oh well Afghan wars weren't much of a biggy.
