AEIOU - Austria Est Imperare Orb Universo

Hello and welcome to my first CK2 AAR. The objective to this AAR is to follow the lives and times of the rulers of Austria from 867 to as far as possible (probably the end of the game, I haven't got that achievement yet). No Habsburgs in 867, but let's try to make the Wilhelmidens as succesful as they were, ruling at least over the vast streches of Austria, Germany, Hungary, Spain and Belgium.

List of rulers:

So, without further ado, let's look at the first of the Wilhelmidens ... Wilhelm.

Count Wilhelm the Unremarkable

Except for his beard. That's an epic beard.

Willhelm is the first character that I played in this dynasty. I suspect the dynasty was named after him. He’s just a count, ruling over Osterreich. Not a very bright guy, apparently had some religious formation, but that didn’t interest him much, so he’s a detached priest. Also has some nice economic skills, but that will not matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Willhelm has a son, Megingoz. A son that apparently had no mother... Anyway, Megingoz is an economic genius, so he gets to be steward while Willhelm rules.

He sprouted from his father's head, like Athena. Since he has no grandmothers, I guess this was a family tradition.

On the matter of other relatives, there’s Willhelm’s half brother, Count Engelshalk of Steiermark, and his half sister, Countess Bertha of Passau. The most important is Engelshalk. The fastest way to power is to actually try to play Engelshalk and one of his three sons afterwards, since then we’d have two counties instead of one, so let’s try to make Willhelm and Megengoz not sprout any more kids from their heads.

This is Wilhelm’s ruler, King Karlman of Bavaria. Karlman also went to priest school, but was a much better student than Willhelm. He’s also a Karling, with relatives in the thrones of a lot of kingdoms. That resulted in his participation in a lot of wars. Wilhelm did his most to send as little as possible to this wars, not being interested in dying due to some far off conflict in Italy regarding Muslims.

Karlman, why can't we live in peace? What's this, the dark ages? Oh, wait.

Willhelm ruled Osterreich for 5 years, from 867 to June 5th 871. His rule is marked by the building of the castle walls of Wien, the main castle of the county, which was concluded in 869. During his lifetime, Willhelm tried to rule justly and improve himself. He executed a band of robbers that was plaguing the countryside, and also became a better hunter.

If there were any robbers after he became a hunter, he probably hunted them as game. He basically was the hunter from Spider Man

His rule is also marked by the discovery that his son, who got the job of being a steward, wanted to have him killed. In my opinion, it was this discovery that made Willhelm no longer want to live, so he died at the age of 51 due to natural causes. Who can blame him? His kid was an ungrateful bastard (almost literally in the last part, with having no mother and all).

Wilhelm was such a nice chap that he probably died on his son's birthday. WORST BIRTHDAY LIST EVER were his last words.

Before Willhelm died, his overlord, Karlman, was very successful in his wars and lucky in his inheritance, so he became king of all East Francia. Lots of new nobles to mingle with in the parties for Megingoz.

No, I'm not using any mod. I've played a lot of CK2 before, but that was before Steam and achievements. Now I want some achievements, so I'll play vanilla.

No, I do not have all DLC. I think I'm missing one of the dynasty shields DLC, also I don't have rajas of India.

Thanks you all for subbing!

Count Megingoz of Osterreich

Megingoz apparently was in his way to a life of hedonism when he came to power in 871. But he seemed to feel guilty due to plotting his father’s death, so he started to contemplate more and more a life of paying for his sins. In 872 he finally made a vow of celibacy, vowing to take no wife and father no children. He also started to show tendencies towards self-flagellation.

In the public life, besides not marrying, this impacted Megingoz’s in that he did went to fight in King Karlman’s wars, unlike his father, probably searching for a way to atone his sins.

While leading the siege of Nassau in one of the many revolts against Karlman’s rule, Megingoz suffered a facial injury that would scar him for life.

It was during this siege of Nassau that Megingoz decided to pass his time doing something to improve his diplomatic skills. He asked King Karlman to take the place of the count of Nassau in a case that pitted two feuding families of peasants. Since he was injured and couldn’t help with the battle, King Karlman allowed it, much to his regret latter. Megingoz showed how inpet he was, when after his speech the feuding families decided to solve their dispute by force in a pandemonium of thrown vegetables and eggs.

Having proven that diplomacy wasn’t his best skill, Megingoz was sent by king Karlman to fight in other parts of his war against king Louis II of Italy. Megingoz was sent south, where he participated in the battle of Engelberg, a great defeat for East Francia. Megingoz was captured by the troops of King Louis II and sent to Pavia as a prisoner.

While he was a prisoner of King Louis, Megingoz’s spymaster served as his regent. His spymaster, Dietmar, gave Megingoz terrible news In 875, telling him that King Karlman had created the Duchy of Austria … and made Engelshalk the first duke. Megingoz now owed fealty to his uncle, who didn’t have the funds to rescue him.

Some say this was the last straw, and Megingoz became suicidal after that. His behavior became more erratic and he even demanded better accommodation from his captor, King Louis II, not realizing he was just a small pawn in the game between kings and that he didn’t matter at all. Outraged at the way Megingoz addressed him, King Louis II sent the count to the oubliette. Megingoz’s health gave away in 26th July, 876, in the dark dungeons of Pavia Castle.

After the celibacy pledges, I guess it was good there was an heir somewhere. Subscribing to this :) Good start so far. And hey, the heir being in the dynasty, and being a duke...can't be that bad.

Duke Engelschalk (876 – 880)

Engelshalk was already 52 when he inherited his nephew’s estate. So he’s not going to last a lot. Which is fortunate, considering his terrible stats. He also at first had a penalty for owning two castles, because his Stewardship stat is just 3 (he also has 0 Intrigue and 0 Learning).

I moved the capital to Wien (much better place, with lots of fiefdoms) and tried to upgrade Wien’s facilities, starting with the castle town. Only Wien got upgrades though. The succession law is still gavelkind, and Engelshalk has 3 living sons. So, we’re going to go back to just one castle after he dies, but still there will be two vassals.

Yes, two vassal counts. Being the duke of Austria, Engelshalk has a vassal count, the count of Passau, Aribo. At first the guy didn’t like Engelshalk, but nothing that some honorary titles (master of the horse) didn’t solve. Also, I asked his kid to be tutored by Engelshalk’s oldest son. This also is a good plan for the future, if they both inherit, with the tutor bonus and all.

In realm news, King Karlman tried to take over Burgundy. But all his Karling relatives were against him, so his ass got kicked in that war. Not a pretty sight.

Also, King Karling increased the crown authority law … but only in East Francia. You see, Austria is still in the kingdom of Bavaria, which has limited crown authority. Karlman doesn’t seem in any rush to increase the laws in our kingdom, so it’ll be some time before I can change the inheritance laws so I can make the characters I play become more powerful.

In 878 Engelshalk’s wife, Klara, died. So, it’s time to find a new wife. I looked for one that had a better Stewardship stat, to get rid of that penalty of owning two castles. I settled for Regilinde de Toulouse, a woman from southern France that is the daughter of a dead duke. From now on I’ll try to get other kind of marriages, though, to try to form the Habsburg’s real world domain. So I’ll try to marry only noblewomen from Germany, Hungary, Spain and the Netherlands. I could also pick some Southern Slavs later. Any other places you guys think would be all right to get wives from, considering the objective of this AAR?

In 879 Regilinde gets pregnant. What a devil is that Engelshalk. He’s 55 and his wife is 18. Talk about winter and spring. In 880 a daughter is born (Alberade). Well, it’s good that it’s a daughter. The succession is already going to get messy with the 3 sons he already had.

The rest of the time passed on uneventfully. I spent the time increasing technology.

In 880, Engelshalk passed away peacefully, to be succeeded by his eldest son, Poppo.

Wait.

Poppo?

Is it just me who thought about this guy when I read that name?

Duke Poppo (880 – 887), aka Poppo the First, Poppo the Elder, Poppo of the Porn Stache

So this is Duke Poppo of Austria. A naïve appeaser, kind of celibate (less fertility) and who has lots of siblings, but only one son, also named Poppo. He also has an epic porn stache. Very german that moustache is.

One of Duke Poppo’s siblings (Wilhelm) became count of Steiemark on their father’s death. At first, Poppo tried to appease him, since he created a faction against the duke and had way more soldiers than Poppo had. The other vassal count also didn’t seem to like Duke Poppo very much, so this course of action was actually wise at the time. To appease Count Wilhelm, Poppo made him cupbearer and steward of Austria.

To avoid the situation of having one of his vassals outnumbering him in troops, Duke Poppo built a militia training grounds in Wien. The soldiers trained there would be simple peasants with pitchforks, but they would do to intimate would be usurpers.

In 882, Poppo’s wife succeeded in killing the Duchy’s spymaster, Dietmar, a genius at intelligence gathering and black ops. The wicked woman was the next best candidate for spymaster, so there was nothing Poppo could do but put her on the job after Dietmar’s death. Truly the work of a genius at getting what she wanted, but not the best at getting what the duchy needs more.

Much of Poppo’s reign was occupied leading troops for King Karlman’s wars with the Danes. The Danes had tried to invade Bremen and Duke Poppo led one of the armies that spent the entire war near Holstein, intimidating the Danish king. Poppo eventually became a better organizer of armies due to his experience in the few conflicts of that war.

Taking inspiration from one of the comments on this thread, I decided Poppo could plot against his count brother. Much to my surprise, Wilhelm’s wife seemed to hate him very much, which was very fortunate, since she was also his spymaster (not very good examples of spymaster wives so far, right?). It didn’t take much to convince her to be part of the plot against Wilhelm’s life to put his son, Arnold as the next count. I was even more keen on this happening, since Poppo became Arnold's tutor. I would try my best to make this Arnold very like the governator of Steiemark.

At first, Wilhelm’s wife, Mechtild, tried to kill him in a carriage accident.

But that went very wrong. Not only did the plan not work, but somehow Wilhelm discovered his brother was behind this. Poppo would be despised for the rest of his life by others, especially Wilhelm.

In Christmas Eve 882, Mechtild gave a better plan as present to Poppo. This plan would involve Wilhelm falling from the top of a tower. And it worked! Santa Klaus indeed does exist, it has been proven.

Still on the subject of how evil the women were in the 880s Austria, Poppo’s wife plotted to terminate the life of poor Count Arnold when he was still a child. And by 883 she had succeeded. The woman had killed one of the best spymasters in the game at the time, poor Arnold didn’t stand a chance even if he was the last action hero. So, the plan to have a governator will have to wait.

In 883 also, the Slavic uprising in the neighbouring kingdom of Greater Moravia started. This would be very important later, as it was the first sign of the collapse of that kingdom. It must be remembered that their king held one of Austria’s de jure counties.

In 884, Poppo probably sat on a pooper that a lot of his soldiers used, because he acquired “the great pox” (syphilis) even though he was trying to be celibate. Either that or his wife was reviewing the soldiers more thoroughly than he was. The disease would be with him for the rest of his life, making him ever more deformed.

In 885, Poppo’s son, Poppo II (or Poppo Junior if you prefer) came of age. He was a flamboyant schemer, but actually his best stat was military leadership. So he became leader of Poppo the Elder’s troops on the battlefield.

And Poppo the Younger would need to take action very soon after his 16th birthday, because his father had watched the events in Greater Moravia with a lot of interest and knew that King Svatopluk was fighting a two front war. So Poppo took his chance and made it a three front war, by trying to take his claim on Znojmo. Later on, others would make this into a five front war.

Poppo the Elder called his banners and soon he could field an army of almost 500 men to try to take Znojmo province. For most of the war, the army just besieged the castles and villages of Znojmo uncontested, with the armies of Greater Moravia occupied elsewhere. But on the summer of 886, King Svatopluk marched south with a force of 530 men at arms. Not taking any chances on the field of battle (especially with the possible death of his heir, that was leading the army in Znojmo), Duke Poppo the Elder took a loan from the Jewish community of Wien. With this money, he hired the Finnish Band (what the hell were Finns doing in Austria, I don’t know, maybe looking for a sauna?) and sent their 1,500 force to help his son in the battle defending Znojmo.

Just the word of the approaching 1,500 men force made the Moravians turn their tails and retreat.

But that retreat wouldn’t matter. After Znojmo had been totally taken, Poppo the Elder ordered the combined armies of his son and the Finnish Band to destroy Svatopluk’s forces (that were facing their other enemies at the time in the north of the kingdom). In Christmas Eve 886 the armies of Greater Moravia were decimated and the Austrians were free to besiege other castles to force Svatopluk to give away rightfully Austrian province of Znojmo to the Duke of Austria. This victory is another proof that Santa Claus exists. Or maybe Hanukkah is for real, considering the Jewish loan and all.

In the summer of 887, King Karlman of East Francia and Bavaria finally died, after reigning for decades. Due to the succession laws, his youngest son, Karlman II, became King of Bavaria and suzerain over the dukedom of Austria. Karlman II was still a kid, so he was very pliable. His regent made an offer to Poppo I, to make him chancellor of the realm, an offer Poppo accepted.

The world at 887

In August of 887,King Svatopluk started accepting defeat in his other wars. It would not be long before he accepted defeat against the Austrians as well. But Duke Poppo I would not see it. His syphilis finally got the better of him in November of 887 and he died before the end of the war, at the age of 42.

And indeed he did (suffer an "accident", that is). Thanks for the suggestion, I'm alwyas open to suggestion by my readers about what to do next.

Henry v. Keiper

Krillin couldn't take over the smallest barony in Ck2. I kid, I actually like Krillin. He's the most powerful human in Dragon Ball. A pity that doesn't count for much, since there are aliens a bajillion times stronger.

DKM

I didn't even remember that. Man, it has been so much time since I saw that cartoon. Mostly I've just watched some episodes of Dragon Ball Abridged in the last few years.

Did you have the auto stop plots option on, or was Poppo's wife really that stubborn?

Krillin was kinda like the Kenny of the DBZ series. It always seemed like there was some point where the villains said, "Hmm, have we killed off Krillin in a while? I don't think so. Let's kill him off now."
