I was going for the iron price achievement as Denmark and decided to take provinces off the hansa at some point. Cue AE and coalitions which only make you war more aggressively to break them and rotate ceasefires. Anyway, I decided to vassalize Saxony. Not only does this make them not like me but they're also unhappy with me taking lands off others in the past. What are my options here, wait about 100 years for AE to burn off while it eats a dip slot or cancel vassal (angering the others I'm sure), anything else? I suppose i don't need them to be happy to finish my achievement but just for my learning.

Also as a side note, when do coalitions get called in?

When you attack a target sure. When you attack their ally and Mark them as Co belligerent sure. What I'd you attack their ally but don't tick them as Co belligerent? What if it is ticked by default (Emperor)?

Apologies for spelling errors, typed on phone.

coalitions only get called if its direct on any of them, or offensively on the target. improve relations with Saxony, +190 is all you need to get the annexation started (and 10 years)

200 is max from improving relations and they're sitting at -230 relations from AE so would sol have to wait a while for that to tick down before i can reach 190 right?

Depends on what other modifiers you have. Vassal alone is +50, Improve Relations of +200 and you're back to +20 (plus the AE ticking down). Give them provinces in peace deals, protect them from rebels and liberate their cores, gift them and otherwise be a good overlord. BROT adviser would help a lot here, but I think it's doable.

For future reference, consider annexing and releasing rather than directly vassalizing. That usually clears your AE with the target nation.

You can clear AE by annexing them and then releasing as a vassal - I know it's not always ideal to do so, but just FYI.

In the new patch annexing and releasing doesn't work because disappeared countries remember everything. I just created a vassal who disappeared 30 years ago and it still had "was at war", AE and other maluses set to the same state as they were before they were swallowed by me.

That's not new to this patch. The annex-release mechanic has always been somewhat buggy. The list of opinion modifiers, to my knowledge, is supposed to be cleared when you annex them. Sometimes, though, not all the modifiers are removed. DDRJake, as I recall, had a lot of fun trying to figure out a way to consistently destroy the AE modifier (I think his eventual conclusion was that if it's on the bottom half of the list of modifiers, it will always be cleared). The result was a lot of gifting and embargoing right before war declarations during, as I recall, his second EUIV Ryukyu WC.

Yes it does. I annexed Brunswick (to feed german culture to them) that had something like 400 AE against me and they had 0 AE when i released them.

It will clear in ten years? Please elaborate.

As for 230, essentially all these tiny annoying states plus a couple of major ones joined a coalition and then they wanted to kill me, so i transferred sieges to vassals and gave them good amount of land. Since overlord takes AE for theit vassals, this racked up quickly. Not worried about the coalition too much anymore, more that some of my vassals hate me.

There are some people who think that AE disappears after ten years if you don't add anything to it, like "annexed vassal" and other opinion modifiers. However, they are mistaken, so don't listen to them. Those other modifiers have a duration listed in the files, AE does not, so it only goes away through decay.

It does suck, this often happens (not quite so severe) with the 3rd elector I vassalize as Castile. The reason you don't want to catch and release Saxony is that it is an elector (at least in all my games) and they will lose their elector status if you do that. Generally though I am a big fan of catch and release. The general rule is that the more modifiers you have and where they are positioned in relation to AE on the list of modifiers will make a difference as to whether AE disappears (it removes only so many variables from the list).

Basically, I've had tremendous luck with having nothing to do with a country except AE, a claim and annex release, I never have any AE left, it's when you do things like give gifts, RM, improve relations, embargo and other such things that crowds the list and then AE can stay on depending on where it is on the list. I think if you youtube DDRJake Debugging or something you can watch his vid on the subject.

I wanted them for their elector status, but am now considering just eating them all and destroying the HRE. The dislike of the Danish is ticking away so will have to wait and see.

Looking at my southern border I was dismayed to see that Austria was both in alliance and coalition with Spain and a number of other countries. I decided to go for a no CB war against ulm to drag Austria in. I'm glad I did because after taking them and their allies from 110k to 0 in armies (currently waiting for some more forts to fall to feed vassals), Spain calls a coalition war. Spain is pretty scary with Spain, much of Italy, the balkans and much of the new world. Looking at the war screen I see that they have about 250 troops vs 160k on my side. But I will recruit another 60k. Also, most of their troop count is colonial forces and I only have a colony in Canada. How much WS do colony occupation give and how likely are their American colonies to send troops to Europe? I may be able to fend off the colonial forces but if not I would hope that occupying some of their continental belongings would offset it. Also, assuming I win, how expensive will things be in the peace deal? I'm only familiar with costs depending on the CB used when declaring, not being declared upon.

Okay I've found out that colonials don't like overseas travel. Got Girona from Spain after much fighting, had to disengage due to commonwealth declaring coalition war. Then had to truce break England because despite truce rubbing it and saving and reloading, game insisted there was an eternal truce of some form. All in all not too bad of a situation though. When I eventually get some peace I will make Girona into my Aragonese vassal, Spain may have to learn a lesson. Oh and I'm the holy roman empire due to the untimely demise of Bohemia. Mostly good because there is no evil Emperor meddling with my peace keeping missions against scheming German states.
