I'll admit, I got bored with a couple of games I've got going on once the challenge seemed to be gone. Have one where the Netherlands has gobbled up most of the low countries, England & parts of France while colonizing the hell out of the new world. Likewise have one where I formed a Russian juggernaut and am pushing towards China. Not that I'm a great player mind you but so long as I can keep some distance between myself and Austria I usually do ok.

Anyways, just to stay busy last night I started a new game as Poland just to see how it would go. By luck I almost immediately got a five star statesman to build up my tech level and went on to quickly peace out with the GH thinking that it would be wise to conserve Poland/Lithuanian strength for later in the game since the peace settlement didn't really hurt us. Kind of figure I can go nomad hunting once they start to break up in twenty to forty years. Also got five merchants each in Novgorod, Lubeck & Venice in pretty short order, then royal marriages with Mazovia, Moldovia, Austria, Bohemia and Muscowy plus an alliance with Mazovia and Austria.

Now, the question is the best way to go from there. Am quietly building up my income and tech though it is only about 1405 at the moment. My military quickly squished Brandenburg in a war the Austrians drug us into but we got jack in the peace settlement and I'm working towards vassalizing Mazovia per my mission though they are in Bohemia's sphere of influence. Just wondered which way some of the more experienced players would go or if I'm overlooking any opportunities. Kind of get the feeling that I'm missing something. :glare:

You play 5.1 patch?

You should try to PU Hungary, then PU bohemia in the first place, then just conquer mazovia, after which you should declare war on teutonic order, and cancell any mission you have during that war, to get mission to conquer danzig/warmia, so that you can get free core on them.

Yeah, it's the 5.1 patch but no, the rest of that doesn't sound too cool. I like to get into the character of the country as I perceive it, not play to what the computer AI is going to do or the missions I think might come down the pike. Am thinking Poland would try to make more friends among the larger Orthodox countries, hold on to Lithuania like their lives depend on it and try to absorb the smaller Orthodox countries through diplomacy. That thinking may already be in jeopardy though because Lithuania is throwing insults around trying to break the PU and they are disgustingly expensive to try and raise our relations to via gifts. Might have to let the GH beat them down a bit to a more manageable size and then try to recoup the loses later.

If you stay at war with the Golden Horde (or anyone else for that matter) then Lithuania should stop sending insults. I would not really recommend absorbing Orthodox countries with Poland. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Poland is Catholic. You'd be using a lot of money (and slowing your tech) trying to convert all the Orthodox provinces or waste a NI with Ecumenism. Furthermore, eastern provinces are pretty poor.

If you're looking for something interesting to do as Poland might I recommend invading Germany from the east? Switch around history a bit, invade Germany before they can invade Poland 500 years later ;).

Invade 500 years later? They invaded plenty of times before that.

Wow. I am all kinds of embarrassed there. Am wondering now why I thought they were Orthodox. Must be too much time spent playing Russia and thought every European in the Eastern tech group was Orthodox. Normally I'm more on top of things than that.

Oh well, at least it is still way early in the game so not much harm done. Just have to shift gears a bit. Have just vassalized Mazovia and then got the mission to integrate them. That will take awhile but ok. Guess I'll build up a bit, shift my diplomacy towards the central European countries and then go Horde hunting for a bit. Personally I see Poland as more of a diplomatic nation then say Austria and would start with diplomacy and building up cash reserves and THEN start trying to eat territory. Bohemia is looking awfully weak at the moment & is going to lose the HRE Emperor position to Burgandy if they don't get their stuff together. If one of my allies picks a fight with them I might be able to glom on to some territory while I try to figure this out.

p.s. told ya'll I thought I had missed something. *doh*

Germany disappeared from the map a number of times?

He's referring to the 1790's partition of Poland between Austria, Prussia, and Russia. Then Poland was risen by Napoleon in like 1807, only to be eaten again around 1814. She was reborn after Versailles just to be cut in half by the Nazis and Soviets in 1939.

As Poland, don't let Prussia or Russia to be formed. Also, PU Bohemia and Hungary, so it will stop Austrian expansion. After that nothing should be able to stop you. If you can, go for German lands instead of Russian.

Being HRE is not best as Poland, imo.

PU Hungary and Bohemia
use Lithuania as buffer between you and GH (don't break their army or Moscow will grow too strong, try to peace out as fast as possible), also remember you won't get core on non-polish provinces when you inherit
vasalize electors and become HRE, add your capital to HRE
PU Austria, Bavaria, Milan, Burgundy (some minors would be nice too, you will get cores on all HRE provinces when you're in HRE)
also don't allow Moscow to absorb Novogrod and form Russia
and use missions on Teutons, that's some nice free cores

potential allies: Novgorod (against east countries), Austria (it's close and it's strong, HREmpire and south), Burgundy (good ally against HRE), Sweden (they don't like Russians too), France (HRE), PUed nations

also when you're using diplo on west, use your military on east, Ottomas have nice provinces
when you have much better techs than nomads make your way to China

They'll also stop sending them if you maintain a larger army than theirs IIRC.
