Jaron,
Thats just fine...Next time you will do much better. You know now, that since you're new to the MP experience, you cannot realistically hope to compete with him over the long term in peaceful coexistance. Next time, you will know to really give John a challenge by going after him early. It is a real weakness of his. He very much tries to avoid conflict at any cost whatsoever until he is uber-advanced. Then you might as well start a new game.
On the other hand, once you gain some significant experience, you can take advantage of peace and inactivity just as much as he can...
And alot of it depends on which countries someone takes. Obviously, you have to watch out for an expanding Spain or Ottomans more then a Austria...In most circumstances.
EDIT: My new tactic for dealing with Spain as France in multiplayer games is right at the start, when France is comparatively MUCH stronger then Spain, to start demanding the right to colonize ToT territory, like the carribean islands, etc, very aggressively, then fortifying them immensly.
The first 50 years, if France can equal Spain in it's colonial expansion, it will remain dominant the rest of the game over Spain. Granted, its a fairly risky strategy that can backfire BADLY if most other countries ally with Spain against you and you are not experienced enough to actually beat Spain silly as France...(Which if you're fairly new and you're playing a great Spanish player, can and will happen...Which is just a fact of life).
