Honestly I feel the same way about Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Germany, most of the Pacific Islands nations, China, the Philippines, oh and the list goes on....
It isn't nationalistic, I'm (US) American so I have little experience with foreigners knowledge of history. I just don't talk to Belgians, Dutch, Luxembourgers, French, Italians, Germans, Pacific Islanders, Chinese or Filipinos et cetera on a daily basis.

Furthermore, it would also do wonders in America, where most people know far too little of the war and then make outrageous claims, as if they invented the question mark.

Tell me where in the world this is not true? In Russian and Europe, its almost like the Pacific War never happened. In America and Russia, they each claim to have singlehandedly won the war.

Eastern Europe wants to forget the Soviet Union ever existed (to the disdain of Russia). Germany wants to forget that Nazi Germany existed (and they censor everything they can).

Throughout the world, people denied knowing about the holocaust before the US started liberating concentration camps, but the people in charge knew the whole time.

The problem with history, is that everyone wants to write a story that makes themselves either look good, better, or not as bad. Depending on where you learned WW2 history, greatly affects your impression on the war, those that fought it, and other people's views of it.

So please, keep you nationalist insults to yourself because they neither add enlightenment nor constructive opinions to the discussions.

lol ^5

And that ^5 is directed at the arrogant people of the world, calling Americans arrogant :D

On topic: people who like deep games are out there, and theyre looking for a deep game. I stumbled across HOI2 after reading a few reviews on the web, looking for a strat game that wasnt a warcraft clone. And since, I had a friend (big ww2 nut) see HOI2, turn around and buy a computer JUST to get this game. So yes, I believe Paradox would benefit on a decent sized marketing campaign.

I have seen a number of reviews in all the major gamer sites but considering the volume of releases it can get lost in the shuffle. It's also difficult to draw in the "average" gamer because most ads wouldn't do the game justice. What invariably ends up happening is gamers see a preview showing stock footage of the war and may be turned off.

It's also important to remember HOI, just like a lot of RPG's, will never draw in the majority of gamers because of one key reason: time constraint. Few people are able, or willing, to invest 100 hours in a game - or 500+ like many in this community. The average gamer is older than 30; in fact, I read once it was over 40. Unless you have an extremely considerate spouse, or are single, or invest all your free time in one game, chances are HOI will never draw you in. Sure it's a shame, but the reality is 20 - 30 hour games will be the upper limit for the majority.

Then again - how many gamers (in pure numbers, not in percentage terms) do not have wives, lives, or other ties (I meant to make that ryme) that restrict their ability to sit down and play a game for a while every day? Well, Everquest was popular at one point, theres a barometer. The only thing I'd worry about in inviting the "average gamer" into this, is that they'd ask to make mechanics in this game more simplified, thereby making it difficult to please the "hardcore wargamers" that got the ball rolling on the series (so to speak).

That is how the gaming industry has worked forever. Most gaming companies started out in some niche, slowly made their way into the mainstream, then made lots of money.

It is just much easier to please and make money off of mainstream consumers than hardcore consumers. I would consider my self to be a "hardcore" gamer, and sadly I have seen many of my "hardcore" franchise get dumbed down, features removed/streamlined, and overall "dumbed down" to make their games more viable.

Personally, I enjoyed the days when the game industry was a small entertainment niche, and lament the fact that it is now open to everyone.

I agree completely, just look at Civilization being released on the Xbox:rolleyes:

Every play the stinking pile of crap called Simcity societies? I loved Simcity 4, but they completely killed the series with societies. That's the worst case of "dumbing down" I've ever experienced.

PC Games rarely see advertisements in mainstream media (TV, Radio, etc.)

Most PC Games you see ads for on television have a console version as well (and they'll probably finish the commercial with a flash of the XBOX logo for example). The only game I can think of that is PC only that sees mainstream media exposure is World of Warcraft.

Nearly every PC game I've ever purchased has been because a box on the shelf was alluring enough for me to pick it up.

Distribution to a large number of retailers and shelf space has got to Paradox's best advertising.

Has anyone here gone into a Best Buy or similar store and not checked out the games section?

Did you read Jazumir's post?

...

In my post, i said, that some people prefer to call themselves stupid over trying to play the game (that´s why the word ´stupid´, is in these: ´´). Later, i went on to say, that i believe, that ´(almost) everyone can play it´. I did not call anyone stupid. EDIT: What i tried to critizise was lack of interest to cope with a mediocre learning-curve, even if offered help, not the inability of such - the willingness of some to rather vastly under-estimate their own potential despite being told ´you can do it, i know it - and it´s worth it!´, and thus miss out on the fun - and the lack of trust when i tell them this. It is exactly the fact, that these people are not too stupid to play it, but just wont believe it.

I don't know about you guys: but if you go to places like gametrailers you'll see about 100 halo-tards bash the heck out of hoi3. It's not even criticism, just "om*g this is c***, so boring, what a piece of s*** game".
So I understand the people that you call "pretentious elitists" because they're right: you averager Schmoe is a moron hooked up on coca cola and "epic sf4 combos ohlolololol deep strategy figtan game I pwnz y00 derpaderp".
Throwing marketing funds at those buffoons is like throwing pearls to the swine.

I vote for PI getting a Königstiger tank with HoI3 ads on it and drive around Europe!

That would be soo cool then i would for sure buy HoI3 (well i would anyway, but it would be super cool).

And if TigerII are too expensive then a T34 :)

But to be honest, i don't think HoI needs a lot of marketing, the reviews will do the job in the gamer community, serious fans will be in this forum and the rest will know through word of mouth or random articles. I doubt HoI3 is going to bring in a lot more potential buyers than the previous games. HoI3 is still the same concept as 1 and 2, just greatly upgraded. So the best ad for HoI3 will be people who played one or both of the first two games..

I just went around a few sites to see if this was true, and sadly it is. They judge the game entirely on its graphics and trailers, then make comments like "no battles?" Of course there are battles! It is a WW2 strategy game, you just expect TW style 3D tactical command: which is about as realistic as aliens abducting cattle. It kind of frustrates me that they won't even give it a chance just because it looks too complex. (I'm not saying it is not complex, but it is manageable - even my younger sister figured out how to screw up my games when I left them paused).

You do realize this hardly qualifies as marketing research of any value?

A quick examination of a random selection of YouTube videos demonstrates that it isn't just HoI3 that is crap. So are many popular songs, videos of kittens and every movie trailer ever released.

Speaking from France, people below 50, and especially people below 30, usually don't know much about WWII either. Not just because we had the Vichy regime, but because they just aren't interested. For an example, we generally know the war began about Poland, and know what the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was, but a good number of educated people can't make the connection with today's Polish borders.

I frankly won't blame that lack of knowledge, especially since one amusing detail I noticed with some of the best (and most well researched) mods released for HoI2 was that even with a rather extended knowledge of the war, acquired through fifteen years' worth of reads and research, there never failed to be a couple of events featuring details I had not found out about or had overlooked before :) WWII is such a vast subject that even a lifetime of research will never give you complete knowledge about it, and tehre's always someone who can come up with a fact or a story you had never heard of :)
