So I got an adventurer coming.

No experience but I've read the wiki. It says I should land him or assassinate him. Plot power isn't high enough for assassinating. Can't land him directly directly because he's not in my realm.

But his father's dead and he's the youngest of 3 brothers. Brother #1 is a foreign duke, brother #3 is celibate so he can't inherit land. But Brother #2 is landless and in my realm. So I give brother #2 two baronies, excommunicate, imprison and then assassinate him. Gavelkind kicks in and eldest brother the duke inherits 1 barony, while the second barony goes to my adventuring relative. He's landed, horray! Adventurer threat gone? But wait, why is the "Adventurer threat" icon still turned on? Hmmm... so I imprison my now-landed adventurer. Adventurer threat is STILL on!

So this leads me to the following questions:

Can landed adventurers still leads armies?

Can imprisoned adventurers still lead armies?

Can dead adventurers still lead armies?

Advice. Please.

Imprisoned and dead adventurers cannot go on adventures. Not sure about landed ones.

Also celibate characters can most definitely inherit land. I think you meant eunuchs.

Adventurers are not really a threat unless you are in a bunch of other wars. And even then the adventurers might actualy be a boon with their 500 gold and save you in some other war.

Really. It's been a couple years since I played CK2. There were horror stories on this forum once every couple weeks - have they toned them down now? I mean aren't the forces still the size of my realm?

Oh and someone in another forum just told me they no longer get 500 gold from victories against adventurers...

Adventurers aren't usually a problem, you should just try to keep tabs on where they are. Build forts in your provinces, and keep a stockpile of gold for Mercs.

If he's a different religion, abuse your Holy Order.

Some times adventurers are so far away from you that their army never reach you, have happened to me once or twice. The Adventurer's invasion begin but they never show up, and the Adventurer dies due to old age at some point, and the invasion end. Usually this happpens if the Adventurer is on the other side of the map somewhere (which always cause me to scratch my head and wonder how he ended up there).

Forgive me if someone else pointed this out, I'm responding directly to the OP.

If the adventurer calls a war on you, if he even can, it should give you instant 100% war score since you have the leader of the war as a captive. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Really. It's been a couple years since I played CK2. There were horror stories on this forum once every couple weeks - have they toned them down now? I mean aren't the forces still the size of my realm?

Man they have been toned soooooo far down.

I too havent played in a while so they were horrible back when I did play. One of my last games I played right before I quit was as the Byz Empire & I remember getting really pissed off when an adventurer popped up with like 100k troops or something dumb & just owned me. Its like back then they were always set up to appear with like 3x your total amount of troops. It was super unrealistic, like how can this random person all of a sudden make 3x more troops than the largest empire in the world has appear out of thin air?

Its not so bad now days. They seem to be appearing with maybe half my total amount of troops, so they are manageable (and a lot more realistic) now.

Adventurers strike me as a particularly gamey, unrealistic and unrewarding part of the game as is.

Since you know when the bastard's coming, have your whole army (or at least enough to beat him) raised and at full morale by that deadline.

I'm hoping that one of the "new playable character types" PDox hinted at is adventurers for this reason. If they added a "Rebel" government type to the game to flesh out adventurers. Adventurers could occupy empty holding slots in any county that the adventurer has claims on for, example, and if left unchecked develop and/or spread into adjacent empty holding counties. Occupation of these minor holding slots would be handled the same way the game currently handles two or more factions controlling holdings in one county. This happens all the time, Kent is an excellent example. It would certainly make more sense (to me) this way, as you could see adventurers, mercenaries, and other up-starts plant their power base and spread rather than appearing out of thin air with a massive army and no "base" of any description. You would also be able to offer the adventurers land to settle them before they became hostile this way.
