Adding DTM files to terrain

The map authority of Norway has made available, for free, digital terrain models of the country in the file format .dtm (more here: http://data.kartverket.no/download/content/digital-terrengmodell-10-m-utm-32 ). Would it be possible to add a functionality to upload these files and use them as elevation data in the map editor?

You might check with the maintainer of terrain.party and see if they'll add it as a source.

The self-contained alternative would be to use QGIS to convert the images to 16-bit pngs, then use GIMP to crop and rescale the image to 1081px×1081px. It would be nice if we could just import DEMs in all the common formats and get great results immediately, but I suspect that would be a lot of work.

That might just work. To spread the joy, terrain party would be best. Wonder if they can do the source annotation that Kartverket demands though.
