I recently learned of the Comune di Roma, established in 1144 in the city of Rome in resistance to Pope and Nobility. The leaders intended to create a Republic in vein of the Roman Republic of old, but were put down the following year. I was hoping the 1144 "The Anarchy" bookmark would feature it, but sadly it does not. Is there any chance that it could be added by the devs? I suppose I could try my hand at a little submod for it with a titular title if anyone is interested if the devs are busy with other things. Thoughts below would be much appreciated

As far as i can see it would be quite a mistake to make it a Merchant Republic. And seeing as we are unable to create other republics and EMF haven't hacked their way to represent other forms of Republics, it would be introduced as a Feudal placeholder realm, if/when we did anything to it.

We will add it to the to-do list as a Maybe/Maybe not item for the future

It looks pretty simple to me--just add a new "Embodiment of the State" trait with immortal = yes and incapacitating = yes. The tricky part would be editing all the decisions, plots, events, etc. to stop strange things from happening with such "pseudo-characters".

You could use the immortal Egyptian God type character that runs games as a base I suppose? An immortal character that doesn’t do plots and such fits the bill.

It isn't quite the same: an Embodiment character still would have to be able to do things like declaring wars and revoking titles from vassals, which Isis doesn't have to deal with.

Using an offmap power could be a solution
It wouldn't be a scalable solution. There would have to be a new offmap power for every single inland republic.

Perpetual regency and immortal characters seems like clunky solutions to me, and also, it fits the Republican part pretty badly. CK2 regencies are not handled in a remotely republican manner. Either EMF, would have to come of with a cleaner hack, that allows us to represent more republics, or we wait for Paradox to make inland republics a thing.

Regardless, we will most likely postpone introducing more Republics, Feudal placeholders or not, until we have some more concrete mechanics to work with.

Well only this one seems to be called atm. Not sure why this would imply treating all republics that way.
I don't share such interest for that feature, only proposing a technical solution here.

Yeah I think inland Republics would be a bit of a mess given the mechanics that are there now and I doubt they will ever be made playable. I don't think that should be a problem for the Commune of Rome however. Despite all the noble intentions of calling the senate back as a deliberative institution, it was basically all a one-man-show. Giordano Pierleoni was the leading figure who established it and when he was toppled the whole enterprise collapsed pretty quickly. The Commune lived on in theory but the Popes were calling the most of the shots again in under 10 years.

In that sense, the system that HIP - SWMHM already has for either Milan or Florence around 1265 or the Lega Lombarda a century earlier would actually be a good fit for Rome I think. With inheritance set to agnatic elective, Pierleoni could be ruler of a titular duchy which could be contested by vassals should he die. In localization terms, the HIP - SWMHM rulers of "republican" Florence and Milan, among others, are already given the title of Console while Pierleoni or any ruler of the Commune could be entitled Patrizio. Short of player interference I guess the Pope or HRE would steam roll it anyways, particularly if they each get claims.

I always wondered, what exactly is the function of Isis?

Reading this makes me just want to mod in a titular title and character for the bookmark as a feudal ruler and role play a game as a “new Caesar” of sorts. I think it’d be pretty fun even if maybe the mechanics aren’t great for it. Adding decisions to transition to a merchant republic could be interesting, or you could just continue rule in a feudal government type as a “dictatorship” type deal.

It's probably the easiest and most straightforward to pull off while maintaining historical accuracy. As an aside, Pierloni's intellectual successor, Arnold of Bresica was condemned for heresy and snuffed out by the church. Looking back on his religious ideas it seems it was fairly par for the course anti-clericalism which overlaps with the Fraticelli. Adding Arnold in the bookmark as a Fraticelli would be pretty interesting too

I modded it in that very evening (with some difficulties) and it is pretty interesting gameplay. It's real seat of your pants stuff as Latium and the Pope both try and have a go at you. After several nail biting wars that were cut really close, I eventually managed to gain a border with the HRE and swore fealty. I then proceeded to cause mischief in Italy for the HRE to my hearts content. Its pretty satisfying as things go.

The modding problem I encountered is how to give Pierleoni either b_roma or c_roma. If I edit one or both in the game files then Pierleoni ends up as a bishop and so is unplayable. I just gave him Castle San Angelo and then console command the other titles to him and then console command myself to him. It's very inelegant but I'm at a loss how to do it properly. I tried staggering out the dates in the history files when b_roma or c_roma are given to him but it didn't work. It's literally been years since I modded CKII so maybe I'm just a little rusty. If you figure out a way to do it please let me know.
