Armies in the game right now are pretty basic, in that their only use is to defend planets, or invade them. I think Stellaris is missing another aspect that's often seen in science fiction, that armies can potentially fill, however. We often see boarding soldiers and security personnel in spacefaring Sci-Fi, and I think this can be done in Stellaris.

I think Cruisers and Battleships should get a component that gives the ship a security team. It could either go where shields and armor go, or where afterburners and shield capacitors go. In addition, there could dropships that have Marines on them, which can be upgraded to have more armor or defense systems to avoid being destroyed in a battle. These dropships can attach to a cruiser or battleship and attempt to take over the ship. If successful, there are two options: Blow the ship up and evacuate to move to a new target, or take over the ship, adding it to your fleet.

This can also apply to Starbases, which would likely have the capacity for more security teams. This would also give attackers a major advantage, since they could take the base with minimal damage.

Do you think this is too broken and OP, or would it flesh out armies in the game more?

i think the idea itself is good. And a landing drop pod in a Utility slot would be really good. In fact are already some good mods out there.
The destruction or takeover of a ship is a different topic. I for myself think that should be possible, but not for a military fleet (the result would be most likely to double fleet size after a few battles despite the fact of escape chance would be nullyfied) because of the immense alloy saving to build an own fleet. This would make military even more powerfull as it actual already is.

To "instant" destroy or takeover ships i think a espionage vessel would be more fitting if you can manage to sneak in range and do a project (to a parked fleet). I mentioned such thing in my stealth and cloaking suggestion thread.

As I see it, boarding simply doesn't make sense in a sci-fi setting, for two reasons:

1) Any method you use to get troops on board an enemy ship could also be used to get bombs on board an enemy ship, which would be far more effective at taking it out of the fight.

2) It would be trivially easy for ships to be designed so that they automatically self-destruct whenever they're going to be captured.
