Caused by eating grain products, such as rye, contaminated with the fungus Claviceps purpurea. This killed whole villages in the middle ages and cause people to burn all grain stores in order to stop it.

Likewise, an outbreak in Paris c. 1129 was reported to be cured by the relics of Saint Genevieve, a miracle commemorated in the 26 November "Feast of the Burning Ones".
It could be used for event to add to roleplaying. Saint Anthony's Fire outbreak in a county, which has different effects depending on different factors and decisions. Learning skill, sponsoring Order of St. Anthony, etc.
