I understand why the starts are clustered to begin with, so that way you get diplomatic interactions right away, etc., but I feel a bit restricted when I play the game without the "No Clustered Starts" mod. More than once, I have discovered another empire's science ship in literally the first planet outside of my home system that I've explored, and their homeworld just a couple planets over. When this happens, it makes space feel tiny, since you immediately have a neighbor. What's more is that it is very easy to get locked into your small section of space, since the other empires around you will be expanding as well. You're forced to go to war really early on, which is especially annoying if you're a pacifist, and only have defensive wars allowed.
So just as a suggestion, maybe toggle the clustered starts to allow more variety of play?
