Currently, when a character dies, the men-at-arms are inherited by the heir--if the heir was already a ruler, however, then they likely had their own regiments and such prior to inheriting your previous character's. In some cases, they had the same types of regiments as well. In my current game, I had a size 3 regiment of Vigman, then my heir had a size 2 regiment, and then his heir had a size 1 regiment. The result is that I have 3 partial Vigman regiments that I cannot merge together, and which are therefore taking up my men-at-arms slots. Ideally, I could merge the size 2 and 3 regiments together for a full size 5 regiment, and then disband the size 1 so that I could have 2 empty slots again. As it stands, I would have to disband the size 1 and 2 regiments and then spend gold to increase the size 3 two times to size 5 for the same result. This doesn't seem to make much sense as the regiments already exist, and disbanding and rehiring the same "people" seems excessive. There doesn't seem to be any discount that could be abused to get cheaper units, and my understanding of the battle/counter system is that it is the pure number of soldiers that matter, and not the number of regiments (so a single size 5 regiment is equal to 5 size 1 regiments).
If I am mistaken with any of this, then I would love to be corrected/set straight, but otherwise I think it would make sense for the regiments to be able to be consolidated.
