I find it weird that you can't pay a vassal's maintenances, I am playing Poland and I've set a march in greece, I built two forts for them and they just destroyed one because they couldn't make enough money to support it. It would be nice to have a button to pay for their upkeep myself, considering I'm already very rich and could easily afford all their maintenances.

Which requires a lot more micro management to do than simply enabling you to pay for the upkeep outright.
I agree with the OP here that in terms of QOL, it would be nice. Relevant ? In 99% of game no, but nice nonetheless
Exactly, I know I can just pay subsidies but as you said I'd need too much micro management for something this small, and the vassal would most likely delete the fort as soon as the subsidies stop

Having a button to pay all the vassal's maintenance would be problematic. The AI would then see it has no costs and plenty of income, so build more forts, armies, advisors, etc. Then once they were done it would see it had no costs and plenty of income, so build more forts, armies, advisors, etc. And so on. Of course you can say an AI exception can be carved out for this. But it's not simple to see how it would work exactly and definitely not worth it.

I think what you really want is the fortify march feature, but where it actually works (I think the original intention where the overlord paid for maintenance is bugged or was removed) and can be used on vassals too. Am I right?

The way it was worded, it was pretty clearly stated to be a by fort toggle like Mothball, so the way OP described it it doesn't seem like it would cause any such issue

No it wasn't.

But if we ignore the OP, I agree, a fort toggle would also be fine from an AI perspective. I don't really see clicking a bunch of fort toggles in different provinces (which must be monitored as the AI builds forts) as less micro than sending subsidies, but that's subjective.

edit: though, you do have the issue where the AI wants to upgrade a fort the overlord is paying for. Are they allowed to? This maybe isn't a huge deal but I guess folks might not love suddenly paying twice what they signed up for.

In my experience fortify march only builds a fort, and doesn't actually pay the maintenance.

Yep, that is how it works currently, making it actually not a feature since you can just build the fort normally. I think the original intention was for the overlord to pay maintenance. Is this the feature you want?

Yeah that is pretty much it. If I have a march they always have a horrible income so they will just mothball all forts and delete if it's not enough
