Adapting History Freeze

When I launch EU Rome+Vae Victus, I am able to get to the main menu, no problem. I select singleplayer, and then a date, and then hit play. The game loads everything until "Adapting History," when it indefinitely loads. I have played the game on my system before, with no problem at all, this has just started. (P.S. I've been creating a mod for the game, but I haven't replaced any of the files in the vanilla version yet.)

First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall both games, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. Then see if it has the 2.1 already installed, if not download and install that into the same new directory.
