We have recovered three Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drives from the wreckage of one of the Prix ships. Dismantling these components on Earth might give us clues to duplicating the fantasically high speed that the Prix ships display.

EDIT:

Another research lab... and a free tech: Cloaking Theory!
Cov Ops Frigs/Interceptors? (EvEspeak yes)

Passive sensor jump-gate/system scanners with cloak would also be a powerful tool now.

Also would be tactically interesting if stealth bombers with an AWACS painter could be used for remote targeting.

The second Prix wreck also produced three Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drives. I think I'll rush these captured components back to Earth, for immediate investigation.

Unfortunately, low-tech stealth equipment is extremely bulky. It certainly wouldn't fit on a Fighter... it might not fit on a Light Cruiser. We'll have to tech up a bit before the technology really becomes practical.

Good idea. If we get internal confinement engines, all our previous designs would be immediately out of date. New engine techs are a huge deal, and we're getting six shots at a two-level higher component.

A shift in focus to low-observable tech as consolidation happens would make keeping the fleet secure by having as many eyes and ears out possible much easier. It's cheaper to replace throwaway FAC to fighter-sized craft for scouting more systems than it would be to replace ships of the battle line and/or Carriers.

Jeeze... found ANOTHER research lab. I've totally lost count, except that it's a huge number. I'm starting to get seriously concerned about how we're going to PAY for all this research. We're not even 1/3rd of the way through the ruins yet. Good thing we've got over $280,000 in the bank.

The new jump enabled spy vessels, could they use it?

Only at the cost of being considerably slower than the Prix. I'm not sure how stealth technology would help them anyway... they are basically one big active sensor with a hull wrapped around it and shit-loads of engines. If they wanted to remain stealthed, they couldn't USE their active sensor... and it's basically the only piece of equipment that they're carrying.

The passive-sensor spy vessels would have more use for stealth, but they're too small (or rather, the stealth equipment to too bulky).

I suggest that we must tech up in that field quite a bit, before trying to design a useful stealth vessel.

Our automated mining station on the uninhabitable world of Procyon A-I is now producing more than 30,000 minerals per year, and continues to expand.

Found another terraforming station on El Dorado. We expect to be finished terraforming Mars up to class-0 status within three to five years.

EDIT: Found another lab, and another free tech: ECM-1

El Dorado has boot-strapped us into a major power!

As for the old fleet issue, refit. Definitely refit. Experience is not something to be chucked aside.

Scientist Henri D'Aazrof has completed research on Laminate Composite Armor, prompting yet another re-design of the intended Battle-II class Heavy Cruiser. Fortunately, I had realized that he was almost done researching the tech, and I withheld retooling the yard until he finished. Since we are redesigning the ship anyway... and since we have a bit of tonnage to spare thanks to the new lighter armor... I have decided to incorporate the new ECCM-1 tech into the design, to reduce the effectiveness of the Prix ECM systems and extend our firing range.

Is there no way to transfer a crew from one ship to another so that we can build entirely new ships and then transfer the existing crews?

Not within the regular game system, no. In Space-Master Mode, I could build some new ships, then delete them again (just to represent the construction time and mineral expenditure) and then change the template of my old ships to match the new template.

... but I'd rather not use SMM unless I have to. For one thing, the game is still in alpha, and I might set off some sort of bug if I dick around unnecessarily.

the whole crew experience refit thing is weird. The crew's experience shouldn't be magically attached to a vessel and certainly not when you're able to upgrade that vessel ad infinitum without loss of experience. With new technology should come new doctrines and tactics that would take time getting acquainted to.

The most straight forward fix would be to have crew experience decay in such a way that while training it approaches an equilibrium appropriate to that level of training, but while at war it goes up towards maximum. No training means eventually you'll have a green crew (as replacements make up a larger proportion, new tech and tactics come in etc).

Basically the tradition system from EU3 :)

As it is, you can set the level of training at your academies, which comes with the drawback that better=less crew available.

I think the game system is already complicated enough. I can live with the simplified training/crew experience aspect.

EDIT: Dismantling the captured engines gave us 8160 tech points, 7200 of it towards Inertial Confinement Fusion Drive Technology.

Holy frack! What's a "Compressed Fuel Storage System"? Whatever it is, we just found a crap-load of them on El Dorado. A ship component?

7200 RP towards inertial confinement isn't as great as it sounds, it's three levels ahead of us and will require much more research than that.

But "Compressed Fuel Storage System" is something completely new to me. I think we just found our first unique component.

I would actually suggest holding off the upgrade until you have fusion engines. Once you do you could upgrade your entire force to speeds of around 10,000 I'm/s, equal to the Prix. That will give you massive tactical/strategic advantage, and save you from performing two lengthy overhauls.

It does mean waiting slightly longer, but it allows you to focus on your economy so you can run all those research labs you found.

Edit: Also consider having two main fleets. The first is an Expeditionary fleet that is jump-capable for use outside the jumpgate network.
The other contains no jump-drives and works solely in the jump network for rapid reaction, with the tonnage saved from not having jump drives spent on overpowered engines.
