Exactly when are we supposed to know about Bioshock-like activations? OK, I can handle the online activation version of Starforce, but I really am pissed right now about only having limited activations. Exactly what happens when I use up these activations?

I really do not like this at all.

I hope you understand that we need to have some kind of control about people installing the game on multiple computers. It is perfectly alright to have the game on your home Pc and your laptop for example, but if somebody was to just share their account info on the internet alll of a sudden lots of people would paly the game for free.

To answer your other question, when you run out of activations bcause you had to install it on a new computer or after a reinstall you simply contact us at the support@gamersgate.com address and we will help you out.

While I understand the desire to control one's product, there is no means to control it without hindering and hurting customers like me. For the possibly little amount of money saved from "sharing" (which incidentally I have never done), you've hurt at least one customer who currently owns 6 games directly from GG. I doubt I will buy future games from there because of this.

Interesting. Thanks for bringing this up. I was thinking about getting this game but now I surely won't. And that includes any title with this protection scheme you might release in the future. I don't mind copy protection in general (even though I know that it's absolutely useless) but I won't tolerate stuff like this.

Also, you should inform potential buyers that you use this. *Before* they buy it.

Same for me I think. Too bad, I was extremely excited by the demo version and was going to buy the game tomorrow. But I'm not going to support such crap. I can only agree to what several other users have said: copy protection - okay, even if as useless as it is; online activation with limited installations - never ever, that's way too much of control and waste of time forced upon the people who honestly paid money instead of just copying / downloading the illegal bullshit.
(This is not to imply that I personally would resort to this option, I have paid for every single game I own.)

BUT...
In this thread (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=323877) the first post speaks of having tried "several installations". How could he do that with the activation crap limiting you to two installations?

Does one of the two versions (retail or gamersgate) probably not use online activation?

Thanks in advance for answers! :)

p.s.: If activation is really necessary in both versions, this is going to be the second game I won't buy because of this damn online activation protection within a month, Bioshock being the other one! :eek:o

In my opinion, I think this kind of stuff that the game industry pulls is the reason pirating exists. I did purchase this game because it was hyped and it ain't too fun anyway, so why put copy-protection on it if we get ripped off anyway?

Hence, I am not a happy customer at the moment...........

be happy beacuse you can play, i bought a game and i can't and no help from paradox;P

If you get in touch with me at florian (at) paradoxplaza (.) com with an exact description of the problem and what version (CD, GG) you have and I will pass it on to the right people to help.

Regarding the activations, I believe I have explained some things earlier. I would like to add the following:

1) Number of activations to start with has been increased to 5
2) In the extremely rare cases where customers actually used up their activations on a title we have so far ALWAYS just given a new key or refreshed the key to full activations.

It is just a means of keeping some kind of control over the copies of the game which are spread, but we are also looking into alternatives for the future.

I have a couple alternatives that you could use (don't worry, they are actual alternatives, not juvenile ranting).

1: Use the old system; where you download the game, the downloader would extract and run the installer and everything would go along perfectly.

2: Make the downloader the actual installer. Since the installers seem to be pretty small now, they could be incorporated into the downloader somehow; perhaps "tying" them together so the installer cannot work without the downloader running? That way only those of us who purchased the game could install it.

And please, for the love of god, don't use activations like this or Starforce again. Neither one of those gets quarter-decent marks for anything but "anti-customer tactics".

That is good to read. Although it does not mean that there'll be any positive result, you don't defend the activation method by hard at least. :)

Well regardless of what you or the company THINKS. All this does is discourage buyers of your product! It also makes the very stupid assumption that customers cannot be trusted. But.....It absolutely in NO WAY stops or discourages piracy.

I came on this board wanting to know if this game is even worth purchasing, but all I see is mostly threads about problems (not even about game play, but technical issues) and THEN I read this thread only to find out this is another glorified "activation" based game.

No Thanks! The company that gets my money is going to actually be one that TRUSTS me as a consumer. If you are smart, you may want to suggest to your higher ups that this kind of activation is a VERY BAD THING!

I really hate any "activations left" bs protection. It's a freaking disgrace; if I bought a game I expect to own that object and be allowed to do whatever I want with it, even sell it later if I want, just like I would do with a TV, audio CD or a car.

What are these paranoid developers trying to achieve? They just promote the pirate industry and alienate their customers.

Or at least inform your costumers about the activation “protection” before they buy it and you f them over. It’s like selling a basketball and dictate that you can play with it on only 3 basketball courts.
