AlI read here is that you want to be able to feel superior over others. Let people have their fun. An achievement means different things to different types of players. You can still compare your glory with likeminded people who swore they did not use mods. Heck, I would even support an in-game badge next to the achievements, that shows if you did it the "purist" way on ironman with mods off for those who truly care (Which I do feel is valid. if my opinion matters, so does yours, even if I strongly disagree). As long as getting the achievement is available for anyone for them to attach whatever worth to it they want.An achievement is supposed to showcase your ability to pull off a difficult undertaking. It's not meant to be a freebie.
On another note, by allowing it in non-ironman, it might be that we could get achievements in MP games.
I would even add achievements to multiplayer, so playing multiplayer can be a fun way to reach a goal together. It has the same issue for me as mods. I cannot use the systems if I want to get achievements. The game forces me to not use two of its major aspects with hefty development time dedicated to them. I strongly dislike this. If that is just to please the handful of people who use achievements to better themselves over others, then that is the poorest, most distasteful reason I could imagine.
