My only question for you really is, since you've alluded that it may be, is EU4 going to be Steam only? I'd like to know so I can continue to look forward to the game, or set my hopes aside and move on to something else.
However, this isn't a good reason to make the game Steam only. I do not like Steam at all. I do not like having games be unplayable because the game won't launch until it updates, but can't update in a reasonable period of time because the patch server is busy, unlike a version where I can cancel the update and launch the game without the update. I do not like having an extra company between me and the game everytime I launch the game. I do not like having an extra layer of technical support for problems with launching the game.
Are you implying you would not buy Europa Universalis IV even though it was the greatest game ever, if it was steam only ?
I wouldn't. I don't buy games requiring additional third party software on principle. There is enough useless additional software on my computer whenever I make a 'clean' windows install or install other software like photoshop. No need for yet another piece of good for nothing software I never use anyways.
EDIT: On topic, I wouldn't have minded achievements, but I can live without them just as well.
You know you can launch PDS games bought on steam without using the steam software, right ?

I don't know if it's intended, but there is no DRM on PDS games, even on steam.
You can actually take out the game's folder and move it around the computer without any issue, and patch it the traditional way, while this is not possible with most steam games.

I'd still need steam to purchase it. And to install I persume as a digital copy? Also, Paradox has stated on some occasions that they think DRM is a pointless venture. Therefore PDS titles usually have no DRM.
In all blunt honestly, I think all this boycott talk just detracts from serious real and pragmatic concerns about Steam. There are many like me who will get the game though Steam, if Paradox wants us to, who do not like having an additional company - an additional layer of "something can go wrong" - between us and the game.
I already HAVE Steam. I'm not one of these conspiracy theorists who think Steam is trying to take over the world or something. I'm simply arguing that putting something between Paradox and You (the player) is bad. If that thing in between is down even once in 5 years, that is 1 time too many.
If not, I don't see the point in losing the 2-3% who refuse to have anything to do with Steam.
Nah, i sold my shares a year ago.. We get the same percentage whereever you buy it online. Steam is about 95% of the market, and i suspect a large part of those buying at places like gg would buy a steam version if that was the only version.
And Steam doesn't stop piracy - so it is not an argument (search any tracker for proofs).
