All that steam legal mumbojumbo is just mumbojumbo IMHO

But...

I'm playing a multiplayer game in a few hours and one of our players can't make it. A Steam game downloaded has uninstalled his Steam client, and he never bothered to update his e-mail address, and is thus now locked out of his account.

Forcing your players to use another program to use your program risks that other program breaking, and players disliking or being unable to play your program because of it.

Of course a majority of people who enjoy playing Paradox games but don't have Steam will get Steam if that's the only method you can get the games.

However, this isn't a good reason to make the game Steam only. I do not like Steam at all. I do not like having games be unplayable because the game won't launch until it updates, but can't update in a reasonable period of time because the patch server is busy, unlike a version where I can cancel the update and launch the game without the update. I do not like having an extra company between me and the game everytime I launch the game. I do not like having an extra layer of technical support for problems with launching the game.

My only question for you really is, since you've alluded that it may be, is EU4 going to be Steam only? I'd like to know so I can continue to look forward to the game, or set my hopes aside and move on to something else.

Are you implying you would not buy Europa Universalis IV even though it was the greatest game ever, if it was steam only ? Just because of some legalese issues that, as you said will probably not be resolved before long, and most likely won't have any significant impact on the game or your life whatsoever ?

That's far beyond paranoia at this point, no offense intended ...

You know you can launch PDS games bought on steam without using the steam software, right ? That btw the only way i can launch EU3 mods since i installed MEIOU.

I wouldn't. I don't buy games requiring additional third party software on principle. There is enough useless additional software on my computer whenever I make a 'clean' windows install or install other software like photoshop. No need for yet another piece of good for nothing software I never use anyways.

EDIT: On topic, I wouldn't have minded achievements, but I can live without them just as well.

^

I don't know if it's intended, but there is no DRM on PDS games, even on steam.

You can actually take out the game's folder and move it around the computer without any issue, and patch it the traditional way, while this is not possible with most steam games.

I'd still need steam to purchase it. And to install I persume as a digital copy? Also, Paradox has stated on some occasions that they think DRM is a pointless venture. Therefore PDS titles usually have no DRM.

What does "install as a digital copy" means ? An installed game is an installed game, whatever the original support was. Thing is, usually steam lock the games and you can't access them without going through the steam app (therefore acting as drm), but that's not the case for EUIII, CK2, Vicky2 etc. you can access them freely without having to deal with "evil" steam ever again after the initial download and installation. I don't know if paradox usually sell their game on DVD, but what would happen then is the game would install with steam, but yu won't need to keep it or even insert the disc after the install to play.

You download the game, you move the folder out of the steam folder, you uninstall steam and voilà. Yes you'll have to install steam and create an account. That wil take you approximately 10 minutes if you take your time. Then you can enjoy hundred of hours if not thousand of Grand Strategy Gameplay with no regrets, and no third party app.

Do you think it's worth your while to boycott a potentially great game and a great company for a 10 minute hassle ?

I never said Steam would be evil. Believe it or not but I'm capable of talking about this service without relying on irrational disdain and prejudice like dear Mr. Anubisfike seems to believe. "install as a digital copy" was a poor choice of words on my part, sorry for that. It didn't convey what I meant well. Basically, I just meant what you said. I need an account and I need to install the client to download and eventually install the game. That does not sit well with me. It might just be 10 minutes, but it is a hassle non the less. Especially if you buy and install new DLC/Expensions, you'll have to rinse and repeat should you have uninstalled Steam.

Do I think my 'boycott' is worthwhile? Probably not. I don't really know to be honest, but I'm a creature of principles. If that makes me lose out on a game, so be it. Guess I'll just read a book instead then.

This thread was derailed far enough by us I think, if there is anything you feel you need to tell me it's probably better to swap this discussion to pm's.

In all blunt honestly, I think all this boycott talk just detracts from serious real and pragmatic concerns about Steam. There are many like me who will get the game though Steam, if Paradox wants us to, who do not like having an additional company - an additional layer of "something can go wrong" - between us and the game.

Like people have said many many times. Install Steam - make an account - get EUIV - move folder where ever you want it to be - uninstall Steam and close account... What can go wrong with that? You would have to be extremely unlucky to pick the time when Steam is down (in 5 years of using it I've only had it been down once when I wanted to play something).

I already HAVE Steam. I'm not one of these conspiracy theorists who think Steam is trying to take over the world or something. I'm simply arguing that putting something between Paradox and You (the player) is bad. If that thing in between is down even once in 5 years, that is 1 time too many.

Ha Steam taking over the world - Valve probably do a better job anyway. I do see your point that steam exclusivity doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless Paradox would get significant extra money from Steam by doing it? I have literally no idea how it all works. If they do get something significant in return for selling it on only Steam I'm all for it.

If not, I don't see the point in losing the 2-3% who refuse to have anything to do with Steam.

Though the thing is there is no direct way to buy from Paradox. There is always somebody between Paradox and the player. Whether Amazon, Steam, Gamersgate or anything else, you rely on their software &/or delivery system. I think Paradox games are only stocked in store in Sweden? Though I could be wrong. But even then you rely on the store to have it in stock.

Buy it from the Steam website and installing it will be the fastest way to get it, the most reliable way (except getting it in store if that is possible) and makes most sense. All one must do is have Steam installed for 30 minutes or so - however long it takes to download and Install EUIV. Then they can get rid of it if they want to.

I'm not in the industry, but the costs of maintaining extra distribution channels are unlikely to be trivial, so if they outweigh or near the extra 2-3% sales, its not really worthwhile.

Nah, i sold my shares a year ago.. We get the same percentage whereever you buy it online. Steam is about 95% of the market, and i suspect a large part of those buying at places like gg would buy a steam version if that was the only version.

I'm not gonna start a rant on steam, as I use it for various games. I do however like the freedom of choice, and I'm a bit worried that we'll end up in a situation, where I can only buy games from 1,2 or perhaps 3 stores, which saddens me. That being said, I'd still buy EUIV if steam is the only option :)
