So my problem is as follows. I am currently in control of about 90% of the scottish mainland as the duke of albany. Here is my problem, I have no claim whatsoever to the throne of scotland.

Ive tried to depose the liege and this merely installs some other bastard that is not of my dynasty. Ive tried declaring independence and this just makes me independent from the scottish crown, but still not eligible to take it.

So my question is, is there any way to get the crown? If so how?

I sometimes se vassals plotting "Fabricate Claim on Duchy/Kingdom of XXX".
I myself only was able to use it for duchies, but plots like this are strongly character driven (content people being unable to plot for Duchy claims, I'd guess you need to be ambitious to plot for a Kingdom Crown)

Well my current ruler is an ambitious, possessed, lunatic. So I think I qualify for it. I'll have a look around the world for plots I can start against other characters, I never really thought it'd be a plot, I assumed you just sat your chancellor in the kingdoms capital until you got a claim, though all that does is give you a claim on that county lol.

You can fabricate a claim on your liege's primary title i believe. I used it as William many times to Invade England-->Wait for levies to replenish-->Invade France
It may be tied to certain traits however, so better look at the game files for it.

If you are independent (or the vassal of an emperor) then you can usurp a kingdom title if you own more than 50% of the de-jure land.

What does it say on the tooltip when you hover over the usurp button for Scotland?

The reasons for not being able to usurp a title are usually:

Don't have enough of the de-jure land
Don't have enough gold
You can't usurp a title of the same or higher rank as your liege
You can't usurp a title within the same realm
The title-holder is at war

Can't think of any more of the top of my head.

This. You can only plot for a title on which you own 50% + of the lands for it. You can plot to get a claim on your liege's kingdom if you own more than 50% of the kingdom.
Same if you are count and you own 4/6 of your liege's duchy, you can plot to get a claim on his title. This will then require to do a war for the title.

The second option you have is to declare a war for independance and then usurp the title. You can't usurp a title inside the same realm, that's why you need independence first.

He doesn't need a claim to usurp the title if he's independent.
