Venice game, carving some historical pieces of land, including land in Croatia and Greece.

Now, I know the mechanic for getting Accepted Culture requires that it represents 12% of your cored provinces' income, but what I don't know is what that income is. Base tax? Base tax + Production? Base tax + Production + CoT related income?

If it is the later, Venice itself will make almost any acceptation impossible and I'll get working on cultural assimilation.

Also, Austria just declared war on me. I'm screwed.

I believe it only considers base tax numbers. Note that all cores, even those not currently owned, are included in the calculation.

Also, you're only screwed if they or their allies can actually threaten your navy. If not it's a drawn-out white peace at worst as without being able to force their way into venice they have no chance to force you into a bad peace deal. Just park your fleet in the water and make faces at their doomstack in Treviso as it melts due to attrition.

In my last game with Venice, I picked off Croatia as Hungary collapsed, nipped of Aquila, and snapped up the Greek states from the Ottomans every time they went to war. I used those holdings to stage my taking of the Italian boot due to Sicily and Naples being able to take on an early Venice relatively easy and Milan is a close land threat, though their fleet is usually a joke. As those holdings cored, I doubled my fleet and military and by 1520, I owned all of Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Greece, and most of the Ottoman provinces. (as well as some holdings in Africa.) So yeah, I usually like to take the Greek/Croatian states first in my experiences.

That said, if played right you could make Greek an accepted culture by 1460 or so with ease, but you will lose it when you start taking the Italian states. I would wait until you own most of Greece and then begin cultural assimilation. It isn't worth moving your National Focus until it can affect 4-5 states at a time.

Really it comes down to your goals and how you want to play. One Venice game, I completely removed Venice from Italy (Except for Venezia and Trevisto) and expanded from Greece to own all of current day Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, and everything in between. I didn't actually take Italy itself until the 1600s.

P.S. Austria is a joke. Just stack your soldiers in Venezia andhold out until their war exhaustion eats them alive and when the rebels start popping up, you might even manage to take a couple states from Austria in a peace deal. Remember, you are Lombard (as said before). Your fleet is your power.

th3freakie is big on historical accuracy, so I imagine he won't be interested in removing Venezia lol.

Oh, bloody hell. That completely screws me over then, with all the cores on minor Greek provinces Venice starts with. Cheers man, didn't know that.

Indeed mate ;)

I will naturally expand to keep the enemies of The Republic in check, but I'm planning to be a naval and trade power, not to be Milan-with-a-CoT. As for Austria, they do have 2 provinces I just won't be able to stop them from occupying, but I'll afterwards keep them locked there, and maybe my ally über-savoy will be able to bring the fight to them somehow.

If not I'll just drag it out and wait for Hungary to try to get their provinces back :D

Cheers mates!

You can also trap Austria' troops in Venezia and destroy them there. Move your troops onto your transports and wait with them in the Adriatic Sea. Austria will inevitably send a stack to attack Venezia. Allow them to land, and then land your own troops onto Venezia to engage them (assuming you know you'll win). Move your fleet back in the Gulf of Venice to cut off Austria's enforcements. As soon as Austria loses, their stack will cease to exist because they have nowhere to run. It's quite effective if used properly in acquiring a positive warscore. The island of Venice is a death trap.

Aye, I considered that option, but how could I ever subject my beautiful house to the dangers of war? I'd be a terrible Doge! :(

Well, think of it this way, they're not in Venezia itself - they're still outside your walls. And aren't the Doges of Venice supposed to be cunning? ;)

That there aren't any mediaeval fortifications visible today doesn't say a great deal :)

... Wow. Reading the description of the Arsenale di Venezia makes me think Venice should start the game with a Grand Shipyard.

They have the Arsenal decision that reduces galley costs by 40% (i.e. better than shipyard+grand shipyard).

That event fires a little too late (requires Naval Tech 10) for my liking, by which time galleys are on the edge of being obsolete. From my understanding, the Arsenal was active well before EU3's time frame.
