Has anyone ever seen Russia to be formed in EUII. Normally they reach crimea in 1700's but
that is about is they never reach Volga or the Urals. I think they should be more aggressive.

Also I've never seen England to gain control of the british isles. Normally they get pretty close in 1490 or something but then they are beaten down by religious wars and revolts. Same goes for the French.

I regularly see England and France do fine. Do they succeed all the time? No, but I wouldn't expect them to. It's not like the British Isles are pre-ordained from 1419. But England annexes all Scotland and Ireland in 45 per cent of my games, and does very well in most of the others. France is regularly the hegemon and has no problems. So they don't always get Gascony. They almost always wipe out the one state Germans.

Russia has always been a problem in EU2. Aggression isn't the problem - the number of enemies is. Russia has to fight strong enemies on its Western Front, especially if Poland has its act together. I have seen Russia get half-way across the continent, but it's very rare.

A lot of fixes have been been suggested, but, as the recent patches have amply demonstrated, game balance is a tricky thing. As game designer Raph Koster said, "Give one fish, somewhere in the ocean, one more hit point, and all of a sudden, BAM! You have too many paladins." I think that the admirable efforts to tweak every nation requires multiple solutions.

If you make events that switch Ufa, Samara and that northernmost mongol province along the Volga to Russian/orthodox between 1550 and 1590 (city of Samara founded in 1585, Ufa in 1588 historically), then perhaps Russia won't lose its momentum. I did just this in my recent game, and I lowered the strategic value of the Russia AI from 3.0 to 1.5 (IIRC). Then I kicked the Crimea out of my alliance (I was Turkey) and ten years later Russia owned Jedisan, Azow, Bogutjar and the part of Ukraine that Crimea had conquered previously.

Might be accidental but I found that rather surprising. Russia in my game was formed from Suzdal, and did exceptionally well beating the rest of Russia into submission prior to 1480, as well as grabbing provinces from Lithuania.

don't know if this has been suggested as a solution in the multiple threads on this subject, but how about making any province that russia has shields on that's revolting automatically switch allegiance to russia after the set amount of time. that way they might grow to their historical size more readily.

Maybe some additional random conversion events could be implemented for Russia.

Many people on this forum talk about how some decisions were made to balance the game. However, nothing is beeing done to help Rusia, who performs a little better than Brabant. Let's face it, in the GC Rusia is weak, and 95% of the time, if it forms in the first time, only manage to get to Astrahan. Now call me creazy, but i think this is definetly a case when something should be done for balancing reasons!
Perhaps it's the AI, or the combied strenght of the neighbours, but they never manage to achieve a thing, and of top of that, most provinces are far too poor in the region.
I for one would be verry happy if something could be done in helping them, perhaps giving them mongolian culture, or some free conversions of key provinces (hard couse they should own them), but i'm sick and tired of not heaving Rusia in my games.

I started a thread not too long ago where I proposed that one of the main problems for Russia is actually that Sweden beats up on them too much. The Swedes also tend to hammer Denmark, and hit anything else around the Baltic pretty hard. Blame the Swedes, I tell you!

Seriously though, I think that Russia in the GC is an example of a country that the game just cannot be relied on to form "correctly." Even the largest country that can become Russia owns only a handful of provinces at the beginning of the game. If things go even a little bit wrong early on then Russia can be crippled before it has a chance to get started. Even if it does form up into a reasonably big country, it still has to do everything right in order to make its to Siberia.

All of the important countries that start out small have this same problem. The Turks, the Mughals, Brandenburg/Prussia... these countries turn out "wrong" almost all of the time because they have a very thin margin for success (when played by the AI).

This doesn't mean we can't try to correct the situation somewhat. I still would like to see Sweden toned down and I plan to test just such a mod out. But I doubt there is anything we can do to really "fix" things entirely.

Indeed.

Although I would also like to see Samara, Uralsk, Orenburg and Astrakhan changed to russian/orthodox at some point in the game. Furthermore, Russia should always reach Siberia around 1565 +/-5 years.

Did Russia start doing worse in 1.6?

My first 1.5 game I played to the end, as Spain, Russia did very well, making it all the way to the Pacific.

I played a 1.6 game the other day as Byzantium and Russia was doing really well until I dragged them into some long wars (as an ally) and they blew up from WE. I couldn't tell if they made it to the Pacific because my map didnt go that far but they were on their way.

I've played a few games too though where they did not make it to Siber.

I have seen England unite the British Isles quite a bit, but ya they blow up from rebellions.

I think Prussia has a way way harder time forming than England or Russia. I think really screws up the game because it seems to me that many times you end up with Austria controlling all of central europe and turning into this scary super power.

It has bothered me too for some time now. At least when playing the GC, Poland and Lithuania usually devours Prussia and Brandenburg often gets gangbanged by its neighbours. I have no idea how to help them though...

Usually I see England do too well in the Isles, I rarely see Scotland survive into the 16th century...

As for Russia, it does have some major expansion problems. I have only once seen the the AI Russia make it to the Pacific. One of my major strategies now is to backwards colonize siberia, which is almost always open. Russia should definately get some help in dealing it's expansion problems.

The only times I have seen England utterly fail in the Isles was when I took action to prevent it, either direct (war) or indirect (nice loans to Scotland and Ireland).

I don't mind seeing the AI fail to perform historically sometimes, that is what makes the game interesting!
