It seems only way to improve relations sending gifts..Gifts that very expensive when you need an ally or trade partner or pretty useless because you no need anyone after you got power..Even you succeed to improve they even dont trade with you..most probably different religion or culture..So whats the point? Theres other way to improve?

If you want something like increasing rebel activity or descrating shrines  these are free.. but you worse your relations and get badboy..But free cmonn..

What about tributes..If someone gives you tribute you have vassal? I saw countries do it without war..I never get a success by diplomacy. Even one province nations dont pay without war. I bring 30 k stack army near of his and say cmon its for you own good ..He says no I am fine. Than I say ok I paint it red this side of map too..

Ps: In Eu Rome Ai really pay for maintaining troops or to train them?..That was real reason why I left EU3..Ai was acting and fighting like a fat and stupid little kid.And Ai wasnt pay for anything ..almost everything was free to Ai..I hate lazy programmers..

I dont understand relations either. I just got out of a long war and pretty much everyone is -200 with me. No trade, no nothing. If I spend 300 gold on relations to get so they will trade it would take 1000 years to recoup that money.

I don't get it.

As I recall, for the AI to accept a tribute demand you must have quite high relations with them. Threats don't work, the AI doesn't recognize troops on its border. I too believe the cost of gifts is sometimes absurdly high, given the average income rates of even the richest (early) countries. I'm working on various ways for the player to increase relations by event in my mod (there'll be more on this in July, when I have more time).
