So say I have a near space-age primitive planet in my empire that I want to observe for the extra science and whatnot
As we've seen in the Blog game these primitives do occasionally get into space properly

What I want to know is if there is any way I can prevent this? What if I quite like my observation planet and don't want to have to end up sharing my system with some new uppity civ?
We know you can technologically enlighten but is there no way to technologically supress?

You could invade them. But I don't know if there's a way to technologically suppress them. You could also infiltrate them and make them your own.

Invading them comes with a severe reputation penalty though
I forgot about the infiltration thing but eeehhh I wanna play an isolationist//purist empire at least for a while, and infiltration still gets me a planet full of aliens
Ideally passive or active infiltration would come with a checkbox or something for techno suppression

Techo-Suppression is good idea. It will be a great fun for Player to have option to prevent or suppress their technological progress. Mean Alien lord who periodically visits their
planet giving warning about not to build a base on the moon that sort of thing. Asking mineral as a tribute.

It depends on the technological level of the primitives. If they are in stone or bronze age you have nothing to worry about, as Wiz said somewhere that it would take primitives to get from bronze to space around 1500 years. As for more advanced primitives, such as machine age, they might go to space rather yearly. Yeah, devs haven't said anything yet about stopping primitive civilizations from evolving

What I gather from the blorg stream is that actual "primitive" species (eg, bronze age) will need a lot of in-game time to get into space (tens of years iirc) unless you actively speed things up. In addition, you can see their tech level at all time by clicking on the planet so you won't be surprised by them suddenly getting to space.

I'm also guessing non-sentient species will never become sentient by themselves, and even if they do you'll have ample time to observe them slowly while they develop technology.

EDIT: ninja'd by Alectron who is probably more right than me about the time to reach space :)

I get that bronze age civs can safely be left and don't really stand a chance of uplifting over any sensible time span, but as we've seen early on in the Blorg stream near space age civs can and do pop into space over, sometimes in a small time span
It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be a mechanism to stop it! :(

If it's machine age or earlier, you can just park a fleet over it and make sure nobody finds out about it. Space age, just wait for them to develop FTL and then invade/purge/orbital bombard them to death.

Although pretty cool, such a mechanism would not be very useful gameplay-wise, and would be fairly easy to mod in or add in a DLC later.

Quite frankly, I think the interactions with primitive and non-sentient species are already pretty deep (especially the uplifting mechanics).

OP asked for possibilites to suppress tech progress, not how to invade the planet.

You get social science from studying them, so them evolving would mean loosing a source of science. It would be an interesting tradeoff if suppressing their progress would lower the science income meaning that suppressing them would secure your income long term but would mean a lower short term gain.

If it's machine age or earlier, you can just park a fleet over it and make sure nobody finds out about it. Space age, just wait for them to develop FTL and then invade/purge/orbital bombard them to death.

I don't want to purge/invade/whatever though because either i'd end up with a planet full of aliens or I'd have to a) take a massive rep hit to invade the primitives or b) take a massive rep hit to purge all the aliens or c) not be able to purge due to ethos (I think it's individualist?) and thus end up with an unwanted planet full of aliens in my glorious isolationist fanatic materialist/individualist human direct democracy

If there is not currently a mechanism to do so, I could see it being added in the future. If you continue to study the prespace species there should be a chance that you royally mess up on suppressing their development. Some cool events with interesting choices.

The question is why do a bunch of isolationists go meddling in other planets' affairs in the first place? I don't see how your chosen ideology leads you to desire this mechanic.

Like, if it's a planet that's within the boundaries of your empire, purging really does seem like the more natural route. If it's not, then you're going out of your way to contact a species you would otherwise not bother with. Hypothetically, how long would you be able to keep a civilisation in the dark before they find out someone's messing with their science?

I also wonder if you get an event if observed planet is about to become Tomb World with an option to react with enlightenment/invasion/buying pop-corn. In theory even invasion would give you less opinion damage from other empires, since it's alternative to total annihilation.
You get social science from studying them, so them evolving would mean loosing a source of science. It would be an interesting tradeoff if suppressing their progress would lower the science income meaning that suppressing them would secure your income long term but would mean a lower short term gain.
Sounds like sub-option/effect for aggressive observation, since passive is about non-intervention.

Because I want the research benefits but don't want to actually have to deal with another equiv-tech power. Like I'm putting them in a nature reserve and putting in place measures to stop them getting out and bothering me
