I've removed the Imperial Reconquest CB from the Byzantines; only a restored Rome gets it. (You can argue this point either way, but I prefer it like this).

As for the Empire's de jure borders, Wallachia ought to be removed.

I think the best way to do it would be to have two different Imperial Reconquest CBs. One for the Byzantine Empire which includes only the bits you need to reform the Roman Empire, and the other for the Roman Empire that includes all the bits Constantine had.

Why does Byzantium get the CB but not the HRE?IRL After Heracletus reforms of accepting the greek language as official and other reforms regarding the greek culture they weren't any much more roman than the hre,only that their lands were owned once by romans.Its like saying if a spanish emperor claims to be the heir of the romans while being spanish is just as "Roman".Also,after heracleitus most dynasties were of roman-greek origin rather than of just roman.I don't understand why paradox favors Byzantium so much.At the very best it should cover levant,wallachia,croatia and south italy with sicily.

I would say that I agree with most of you : Imperial reconquest should concern onlly Eastern Roman territories, then if you manage to gain back a substantial amount of it you could have the others. However, I would exclude Hungary from it since, even if it was owned by the byzantines for some years, the map below map shows that it was out of the original partage of 395.
mapEWRomanEmpire.jpg

Plus, it would give to Croatia a way to survive and weaken the ERE...

Also, I don't see why the imperial reconquest CB should not include the possibility for the attacked to call to arms their brother in arms. If I were king or duke (or emir) of some place near the ERE, I would jump on this arrogant emperor which think he can bring Rome back to its former glory! Hey, I'm the next in line! Or even if I'm not, I would have at the result a super-powerful neighbour.

Finally, if you grant a kind of super-de-jure CB to the ERE, wouldn't it make sense to increase the lifespan of other de jure CB? Maybe a place should have been owned by the adversary a longer time than by our, but I don't even know if it would apply to the IR CB.

Er, changing the language of state doesn't make them any less Roman. They're still the continuation of the same Roman state. The HRE, on the other hand, is just some dude saying that he's the Roman Emperor because some guy gave him a hat.

Is there a way to mod out the "holy wars" for Byzantium since, it seems to me, that all of the ERE's wars were "holy" ones. In the same vein is there a way to change the IR CB's to let others join the defense like they do with holy wars? Making it more challenging?

Basically replacing holy wars for Byzantium with imperial reconquering.

Try adding these:

Code:
imperial_reconquest = {
	name = CB_NAME_IMPERIAL
	war_name = WAR_NAME_IMPERIAL
	sprite = 17
	truce_days = 3650
	is_permanent = yes
	check_de_jure_tier = DUKE # this scans all dejure duchies for the counties which are held by or vassals(or below) of selected character. Only valid if is_permanent = yes
	[COLOR="#FF8C00"]can_call_allies = yes
	can_ask_to_join_war = yes[/COLOR]

Personally, I have no problem with the Imperial Conquest CB. The ERE never dropped their insistance that they were the one true Roman Empire. Practical considerations kept them from making efforts to expand beyond the in game de jure Empire, but had an Emperor felt strong enough in the East he could well have decided to follow Justinian's lead.

The idea of staggering it is a good one though, perhaps only allowing it if the Empire controls a certain % of a neighboring de Jure kingdom? I.e, you'd have to reconquer Anatolia, then Syria, then Jerusalem, then Egypt.

Alternately, you could unlock Imperial CBs in a few stages. I: Anatolia, Greece and Balkans leading to II: Syria, Jerusalem, Sicily and Naples then III: Egypt, N Africa, Italy, Andalusia After you conquer all those (roughly giving you the Empire of Justinian) you get the rest.

In the past 4 games wich I played for the first 20 years or more, the ERE always annexed or at least severely crippled Croatia and (with or without the help of the Fatimids) the duchies of Apulia, Sicily and whatever managed to break free from the HRE.
This might or might not be historical, but I like my Siciliy and Croatia to actually be able to do something.

All 4 times were with the start in which both the Fatimids and ERE are reduced to 50% of their former size. (Alexoid?).

Yeah that might be fair. I only ever proceed generally in that direction anyway. I'd say that the ERE should have to recover its eastern territories first in order to have a strong enough power base (and really, a secure enough flank) to retake the West. The ERE never tried to emulate Justinian's reconquest of the West because it never had the power to after the Sassanid/Muslim wars.
