I just started thinking as I see them posted and post these birthday posts myself. In general I think it's a great way to remember all the outstanding AARlanders there are. But I think that the posts are becoming quite repetitious and empty, AARland has grown and some users remain unfamiliar to me and maybe to other people too.

So I'm thinking that whoever posts a new thread congratulating somebody, he/she should add some of the congratulatee's work to the post and/or say what it is that they are known for.

For example: "If I should congratulate Duke of Wellington, I'd say that he is a darn good writAAR and is known for his ability to be and comment everywhere in AARland. I believe that his constructiveness has inspired and helped a lot of young writAARs to get started with their AARs."

This way we'll all get to know each other much better and the birthday boy/girl will feel the wishes much better.

Tell me what do you think about this proposal?

It's a good idea. I've seen some birthday posts recently for people who I'm not even sure have ever even posted in AARland before. These should be on whatever boards they do post on, not here.

First of all, I think your last comment is a bit too "elitist" (however that might be written... ;) ), secondly I don't see the need to add a lot of comments in Birthday thread. Especially since I normally only congratulate the person I know. And how to I know them? By reading these fora, so...

Anyway, that's just my opinion... :)

I also congratulate people I know of. But there are a lot of people I don't know. That would be a way to get to know their work and input in the AARland.

How is it remotely elitist to suggest that birthday threads shouldn't be used as a means to increase post counts on celebrating the birthdays of people who don't actually post in AARland?

I don't care how many posts a person mentioned in a birthday thread has, just so long as they're using AARland. Clearly, this isn't the case in some instances.

If someone posted a 'happy birthday' thread for my benefit on, say, the Spanish forum, then the people who use the Spanish forum would probably be a little bit peed off. And they'd be entitled to be.

I like the idea. Even just to add something like even links to the persons AAR(s) and a little something is better than just a standard post. I'll make an effort to do so where I can from now on.

Vincent Julien I'm not sure exactly who you're talking about that has been congratulated in here without posting in AARland since I by no means know of everyone active, especially in CK and Vicky, and if I don't know someone I generally assume thats where they come from, althoguh the case may be as you suggest they are not here ever. I know Stonewalls didn't fit but the absence of OT meant this was perhaps the best place.

And Stonewall has written AARs. ;)

Adding a little extra sure would not hurt, to be sure. But I would caution people before starting a birthday thread - make sure that person has a good chance of seeing it (i.e. - they are still around or will most likely return soon.) And obviously they should be a member of this area. If you don't recognize the name, either ignore it or search that person out and get familiar with their work. :)

Indeed, and I for one would very much like to see him continue his Imperial Russian HOI AAR... :(

As for the topic of this thread, I think it's a good idea to include a few lines about who the birthday kid is, even if it's The Yogi. :)

Which is excactly why I avoid them as hell. For me most "congrats" are spam if a post doesn't contain more than that, why post it?

Because I like being friendly :).

Just like I congratulate people who have become writAAR of the week (if I haven't read their AAR for which they are awarded I read the first and last posts of the AAR, to see if I like it)

I also congratulate people who have been made Fan of the week, some I don't even know (I haven't seen them post), but that mostly means that they are visiting an AAR forum that I don't visit regularly

I also think Deus his suggestion is a good one

Oh, nothing against that, but I think in a forum where the post number and custom avatar is a form of status symbol, this will be exploited to get 3000 posts faster. It really is on the edge to spam to me because of that (not so much once a person is over 3000 because it doesn't seem to matter anymore).

By the way, I agree with Deus' suggestion as well, I always tried to do excactly this.

Considering wishing someone on this board a happy birthday is voluntary, adding conditions is ridiculous. It is completely unacceptable.

This would be exactly like me mailing you something because you're in the hospital, and the doctor replying the bloody card wasn't long enough.

If you don't like the birthday threads, or you feel they're used for spamming, or otherwise don't want to participate, then don't. No one is forcing you to read these threads. No one is forcing you to deal with the horrible truth that some people on these boards are friendly and enjoy the sense of camaraderie.

I agree. Some of the comments here have been elitist - to put it very kindly. If you don't know the person, then why the hell do you want to crab on their celebration anyway? Birthday posts do not require an introduction for the simple reason that one doesn't invite their friend to a party and say "Hi folks, this is Joe, I know him from work, please give him a round of applause."

If you don't know them and can't be bothered to snoop around AARland, then leave them the heck alone. Go post a world conquest or something. Just don't be too alarmed if you have problems getting comments, since that seems to require a certain level of participating in these forums.

Oh, and leave the cake for me. :)

Whoa, calm down. If one wants to wish happy birthday its fine by me, however doing it on a board is public to all AARlanders. I was merely suggesting that it would be nice to tell other people about that who these persons are. Why so touchy?

CatKnight said:

You're not sending a card you're shouting it all over the hospital.

I have nothing against these threads. Where did you take that. I was merely implying that this camaraderie could be more felt if the person congratulating would say something to the others.

While I agree with CatKight, I also think it would be nice if whomever made the birthday post put in some info so others could here about the person. However, people should be able to post what they want as long as it doesn't get to spammy.

Let's calm it down, fellas. It was just a suggestion. Let's not make birthday wishes an issue, for crissakes. We don't want to have to take them away, now do we?

Good points have been made by all. Now let's just leave them at that. After all - the folks who actually think about starting birthday threads are few. And I am fairly certain those members have read this and will consider it in future.

Now everyone go read an EUIII AAR! :D

Mmmmm Too bad. No birthdays to day of anyone I know :p (well, except for Flori but he is no AARlander).

I don't know about conditions.....if conditions are set I couldn't perhaps even congratulate my friend Cthulhu anymore cause he didn't write an AAR in some time. I am sure he is here around sometimes reading an posting so.....well. I am not in favour of it.

But, I really like it if someone would tell something about the person and his AARs when he posts the brithday thread.
