I'm contemplating splitting up my Byzantine empire into multiple vassals of 6-8 provinces. I don't have any particular reason for this other than it would look cool* and I believe releasing vassals reduces infamy. I'm concerned how this is going to affect trading. Right now I'm running a mercantilist trade system because I own about 10 CoTs. If I end up pulling a CoT into a vassal I'm concerned I'll lose the home advantage bonuses.

So the question is simple. How are vassal CoTs treated in this game? Are they treated as if they are home territory, independent or some sort of hybrid?

*the plan is a Byzantine core empire that covers Italy, Austria, Greece, the balkans, the caucasus, the holy lands and the north of Egypt. Then a bunch of vassal kingdoms for the rest of my territory. Once they've been converted to Orthodox of course.

But you still are the overlord, so you get half of the vassal's income, some of which will come from the CoT. So its an indirect benefit, and you can still put your own merchants in there too.

Usually it is possible to be a mercantilist and still have a decent chance abroad if you have better trade efficiency then most competitors (spam custom houses). SCP and advisor may be essential though. But released vassals tend to have same tech level, so it may be more difficult. In any case, income will drop, as mantaining a lot of monopoles abroad would be very difficult.

Ok I'll structure my new empire with imperial districts that are centred around the CoTs and vassals which trade in the imperial district. This is annoying because Wales has set up a CoT and I wanted to give them half of England. I'll see if I can dispose of that CoT once I've actually invaded the place.

France and the low countries seems to split up nicely into vassals. I've got an 8 province Brittany and will be making an 8 province Champagne tonight*. Flanders is going to be my next target with a Burgundian south east region. Probably with Guyenne in the south west. I'll keep Nevers (which is a CoT) as part of a 4 province imperial district.

*waiting for conversions

you get half the vassal's tax income. a very minor benefit compared to what they could be making trading.
