... Would be helpful after I gave an ally 500 ducats to resolve its debt so it could join my war only later to realize that the dept was 46 ducats.
Please yes, I cant count the number of times I've wanted to pay off an ally's debt but havent known how much to give them so havent given them anything for fear of paying way too much. Also would be really useful for seeing how weak a nation is economically
If you look at their score in the ledger you can see if they have a negative modifier due loans. Every active loan is -0.02 monthly admin score. In addition, I personally think we shouldn't be able to see how much dept non-allies have because they won't disclose their financial situations to us; allies on the other hand could given that we could help with the problem.

Actually I wouldn't mind if there was an option allowing us to pay our ally's debt directly.
Bit too much work, particularly since the AI is virtually guaranteed to put the money you gift them into repaying debts. The only thing they prioritize higher is 'having something resembling an army'.
What about multiplayer? It's not a bad strategy to assert that you need way more money to cover your debts than you have. If other players can see your debt, then you can't lie to them.

Perhaps make it only visible for allies? But more realistic that way. Also, being able to see absolutely everyone's debts might be exploitable somehow. I'm not sure how yet, but it feels like it.
You can already see both the amount of their loans and their income in the ledger, which you can use to get a decent idea of the size of their debts assuming their income hasn't changed drastically for a while. Being able to see the actual amount wouldn't be that big of a change.Perhaps make it only visible for allies? But more realistic that way.
